Chapter 10: Locking up his thoughts
Jiang Shibai stood at the door, feeling a little helpless, and finally pushed open the door of the ward.
Old Mrs. Jiang and the nanny Aunt Liu looked at him at the same time. In an instant, Old Mrs. Jiang swallowed the millet porridge in her mouth, and Aunt Liu put the bowl on the small table.
The two looked at each other and acted skillfully in front of Jiang Shibai.
Old Mrs. Jiang's face was filled with pain. She covered her heart with her hands and muttered, "Ouch! My heart hurts, it hurts!"
"Madam, are you okay? I'll call a doctor for you." Aunt Liu looked anxious and hurried forward.
As Old Lady Jiang was acting, she looked at Jiang Shibai and said pitifully, "It's okay, it's just my old illness. If I could see Shibai get married and have children in my lifetime, I would die without regrets!"
The two of them sang in unison for a while, and Jiang Shibai didn't move his eyebrows at all, just looking at them quietly.
The atmosphere froze for a moment and awkwardness spread.
Seeing this, Mrs. Jiang simply stopped pretending. Seeing that he was unmoved, she became furious.
The show was in vain again.
How could he be such a grandson, not giving an old lady any face at all?
Jiang Shibai stared at the old lady on the bed with a rosy complexion and unparted white hair, and didn't know how to start.
He has watched this kind of play dozens of times in the past two years. Every time, the story is the same, but the battle of wits and courage has not diminished the old lady's persistence and enthusiasm.
Instead, the situation has become increasingly serious and has escalated to the point where patients have to be hospitalized and feign illness.
"Grandma, do you still have chest pain? If it still hurts, I will call a doctor for you myself, or go abroad for treatment." Jiang Shibai walked slowly to the sofa and sat down, picking up a fruit knife to peel an apple.
"Look at him, how can he be a grandson like this? He's trying to piss me off." Old Mrs. Jiang pointed at Jiang Shibai with trembling fingers and said to Aunt Liu.
Aunt Liu felt helpless, but had to cooperate. This was the case with old children, who needed someone to coax them.
"Master didn't mean it. Please talk to him."
"If he doesn't listen to me, it's useless to talk to him."
Jiang Shibai listened to their conversation without any reaction. He peeled the apple slowly. The white flesh in his palm made his hands look even whiter and his skin looked cold.
Cutting each piece into the plate with graceful and dignified movements, it exudes a natural and majestic aura.
Seeing this, Old Lady Jiang winked at Aunt Liu. Aunt Liu had been in the Jiang family for more than 20 years and had watched Jiang Shibai grow up. She was not afraid of him and walked over and picked up the plate on the coffee table.
"If I don't let you eat the apple, you'll be mad to death." Old Mrs. Jiang took the plate, put a piece of crispy fruit into her mouth, and said angrily.
Jiang Shibai's eyes and eyebrows showed a bit of helplessness, the corners of his lips raised slightly, he pulled out a tissue and wiped it slowly, then said: "I peeled it for you to eat."
He doesn't like apples.
Old Mrs. Jiang paused slightly while chewing the apple. She suddenly felt that the apple was an eyesore. She didn't know whether to eat it or put it down.
Why are all the kids these days so rebellious? They're not cute at all like they were when they were little, even though he wasn't cute since he was little.
Jiang Shibai didn't anger the old lady anymore and got back to the point, "I came to you today to tell you something important."
He thought that getting married was a big deal and that his family needed to be informed, and he had no intention of getting married in secret.
"Big deal? To me, it's not a big deal unless you have a girlfriend." Old Mrs. Jiang rolled her eyes.
Jiang Shibai chuckled, his face turned serious, and he said solemnly: "I'm married."
"Just get married, just tell me—" Old Mrs. Jiang's expression changed slightly, and her eyes widened.
When she came to her senses, the pain in her heart was gone and her legs and feet were agile again. She threw off the quilt and hurried out of bed. If Aunt Liu hadn't supported her, she would have fallen.
"Slow down." Jiang Shibai hurriedly stood up, but before he could move forward, he was stopped by Old Madam Jiang. "Stand still. What did you just say? Who got married?"
"I got the marriage certificate today." Seeing that she stood firm, Jiang Shibai could only stand there obediently with a smile on his face.
"You don't even have a woman, how can you get married? Don't tell me it's a man, right? I'm not that open-minded." Old Mrs. Jiang kept up with the latest trends and read a lot of online topics. "If that's true, I'll break your legs."
Jiang Shibai ignored the old lady's threat. He calmly reached into his suit jacket and took out two red marriage certificates.
"Take a look first, and then decide whether to break my legs."
Old Mrs. Jiang took a closer look and was delighted at first, but then she became a little wary. Would this boy use a fake certificate to deceive her?
Although she was suspicious in her heart, her body was very honest. She took the marriage certificate, put on her reading glasses, and carefully looked at the photo and information on it.
Looking at the stamp of the Civil Affairs Bureau, I felt a little more convinced.
She had been pushing him to get married so hard over the years that she couldn't guarantee he wouldn't do something foolish and lie to her. Old Madam Jiang stared at Jiang Shibai with confused eyes and asked again, "Are you really getting married?"
"It's absolutely true, the dates are all fresh." Jiang Shibai's face was calm, and his eyes were filled with unprecedented seriousness.
Old Mrs. Jiang enjoyed playing and joking with him, but she also knew that her grandson would not lie to her about important matters.
Thinking of this, she didn't ask any more questions. She looked down at the photo on the marriage certificate in her hand and pulled Aunt Liu to discuss it.
"This little girl is quite pretty."
"Look at her full forehead, she is blessed."
"It's not important. The brat is finally married. I feel relieved. I'll have a baby next year and that will make everything perfect."
"Don't mention having children in front of her, so she won't be shy." Jiang Shibai reminded at the right time.
He didn't want to put external pressure on Xu Xian or scare her away.
Having a child is not in his plan for the next two years, and he doesn't want a child to disturb their world of two.
Mrs. Jiang was very satisfied with his attitude of protecting his wife, but she couldn't help but tease him, "Look at this boy, he's so good at caring for his wife, but he only knows how to make me angry."
"I've lived for over seventy years and have eaten more salt than you've eaten rice. How could I be so inconsiderate?"
Jiang Shibai smiled helplessly.
His grandmother is too sensible and often lets things slip, so she inevitably needs to be reminded.
"Why didn't you bring it to me today?" Old Mrs. Jiang noticed the time on the marriage certificate, which happened to be in the afternoon.
She had been looking forward to seeing her granddaughter-in-law for more than ten years, and she felt a little disappointed that she hadn't met her.
"We have to pick a formal meeting date. The hospital isn't very suitable." Jiang Shibai said it nicely, but in fact he felt that he needed to give Xu Xian some buffer time.
He knew a little about the process of meeting the parents, and it would only be formal after meeting the girl's parents.
He automatically ignored the idea of getting married without consulting anyone else.
He put so much thought into the marriage and didn't want his bride to disappear the next day.
"Yes, yes, hurry up and arrange for me to be discharged from the hospital. I'll wait for you to bring your granddaughter-in-law to your house." Old Mrs. Jiang couldn't wait to be discharged and muttered, "What kind of gift should I prepare? How about a set of jade? Or some antiques from your home? A big red envelope would also be nice..."
Aunt Liu's face was also filled with smiles. "Let's go home and think about it slowly. There's no rush. The young master's wedding is a big event and needs to be carefully planned."
"Yes, we should be more careful."
After Jiang Shibai sent Old Mrs. Jiang back to the old house, he did not stay there for dinner, but returned to Repulse Bay where he usually lived.
The first thing he did when he entered the house was to go straight to the study and put the two marriage certificates into the safe, placing them on top of the one hundred and one yuan.
The door of the safe closed, and so did his little thoughts.
