Chapter 16 She seems to have no home

Chapter 16 She seems to have no home

Having said that, Xu Xian didn't dare to take too much. There were only a few spoonfuls of soup in the shallow porcelain bowl, which was already her mother's limit.

As she blew away the heat, she asked, "Where did Aunt Wan go?"

Xu Xian had to work to earn money to pay for the huge expenses of cancer treatment and did not have time to take care of her mother personally, so she simply hired a caregiver, Aunt Wan.

Aunt Wan is cheerful and thoughtful. She has taken good care of her mother over the years and they have lived in harmony, so she has never changed the caregiver.

"She went to pick up her grandson from school." Zhang Wan was not yet at the point where she wanted someone to follow her everywhere. Sometimes when Aunt Wan's grandson's parents had no time to pick him up, they would ask Aunt Wan to pick him up when she had time.

Xu Xian nodded in understanding and handed the skimmed chicken soup to her mouth, the aroma filling the air.

Zhang Wan drank from her hand. Her taste buds had actually degenerated a lot, and she couldn't taste the original flavor of the chicken soup at all, but she nodded repeatedly.

"Xianxian's soup is the best soup Mom has ever tasted."

Xu Xian suppressed the bitterness in his heart and raised the corners of his lips slightly, "It tastes good, please have a couple more sips."

As expected, he couldn't drink much. After drinking only four spoonfuls of chicken soup, Zhang Wan shook her head and refused the next spoonful.

Xu Xian didn't force her. He put down the bowl of soup in his hand and thought about how to bring up the matter of her getting married.

No one knows a daughter better than her mother. Xu Xian was Zhang Wan's child after ten months of pregnancy. She could easily detect the slightest changes in her expression. "Did you encounter any difficulties at work?"

"No." Xu Xian shook her head in denial. She had actually never told her mother about the job transfer because she was afraid that she would worry too much and her condition would become less optimistic.

"Is it about feelings?" Zhang Wan said too much, and it seemed a little difficult, with a hint of sadness between her brows.

She has only a few days left, and the only person she cares about is Xu Xian. She hopes to see her get married in her lifetime, so that she won't be left alone after she dies.

But she didn't want to talk about this disguised form of urging her to get married. She was afraid that Xu Xian would just find someone to spend his life with just to fulfill her wish, and she would regret it in the future.

Xu Xian paused for a moment, then glanced cautiously at her worried mother before gritting her teeth and saying, "If, if I... got married, what would you think?"

Zhang Wan felt strange about her daughter's hesitant attitude. Her daughter would never say "if". Thinking of this, her mood fluctuated slightly, and she struggled to stand up by leaning against the back of the hospital bed.

Xu Xian hurriedly pressed her down, listening to her heavy breathing in his ears, and biting his lower lip tightly.

"Are you kidding me?" Zhang Wan's eyes were filled with disbelief, her brows slightly furrowed. As far as she knew, she hadn't had a boyfriend in recent years. Could it be her ex-boyfriend from college? "Could it be from before..."

Before he could finish his words, Xu Xian interrupted him hastily, "What are you thinking? There's absolutely no possibility for me and the one from before. Why bring up the past?"

She had a first love in college who she dated for half a year. After graduation, they broke up due to various reasons and obstacles, as well as different plans for the future.

Seeing her frank expression, Zhang Wan knew she wasn't lying, and her attitude became a little tougher. "Then tell Mom what's wrong with you?"

Xu Xian pulled a chair and sat down, saying softly, "I got married with my boss two days ago. I was afraid that your condition would worsen, so I was thinking about how to tell you."

"When did you start dating? How come I didn't know?" Zhang Wan grasped the key point.

She wants her to get married, but she doesn't want her to get married without thinking.

Xu Xian didn't dare tell Zhang Wan about the absurdity he had done two months ago, so he could only change the subject slightly: "We met two months ago. He's a nice guy, so we got married."

Zhang Wan seemed to be meeting her daughter for the first time. She didn't expect that she would be so reckless about marriage. Isn't this what is often called a flash marriage on the Internet?

"Is that man so good? Is he worth your quick marriage?"

She was afraid that she would meet a scammer and be tricked into marriage.

"Aren't you afraid of missing out on a good man? Don't worry, Mom. He's a nice guy. I'll bring him to you to meet him in a couple of days." Xu Xian laughed it off, trying to get away with it.

Zhang Wan glared at her when she heard that. Just as she was about to say something, Aunt Wan pushed the door open and came in. Seeing Xu Xian, she smiled and spoke in a cheerful voice.

"Xianxian is here! Why haven't you come these past two days? Is he too busy at work? You can't work too hard on weekdays! You must balance work and rest."

In the past, Xu Xian was busy with work and had many social engagements after get off work, but he would basically come to the hospital every other day. However, he had not been seen for the past two days.

Faced with Aunt Wan's nagging concern, Xu Xian did not get impatient and answered her questions one by one, "I am a little busy, but I eat on time."

With outsiders present, Zhang Wan didn't dare to ask more about Xu Xian's new husband. She glared at her lightly and signaled her to bring the man over for a look as soon as possible.

The marriage was a foregone conclusion, and she could not say anything more. She could only wait and see what this good man who helped her precious daughter get married so quickly looked like, and then make some decisions for her.

With Aunt Wan present, the few of them chatted intermittently for more than half an hour. Seeing that Zhang Wan looked tired, Xu Xian got up and left, and promised to bring her son-in-law to the hospital to meet her in a few days.

On the way back, Jiang Shibai called. Xu Xian took a moment to answer the call.

A pleasant man's voice came from the car phone. It didn't need to be deliberate, and there were some ups and downs in the calmness, especially when he called her name.

"Xianxian."

The feeling is very subtle. These two simple words seem to be wrapped in tenderness, which is even more obvious in the closed car.

"What's wrong?" Xu Xian slowly stepped on the brakes. The red light ahead was counting down.

Listening to the woman's soft tone, the phone next to Jiang Shibai's ear moved slightly, caused by a subconscious hand tremor. It was the first time he heard her voice on the phone. Different from the usual cold voice, there was a hint of electronic sweetness.

"Will you come home for dinner tonight?"

When Xu Xian went out, it was still dusk, with a faint orange-yellow light illuminating the earth. Now it was completely dark, with only the bright street lights as illumination.

Hearing this seemingly ordinary, homely remark, a subtle bitterness welled up in her heart, and her porcelain-white fingers on the steering wheel curled up.

Ever since her father died unexpectedly three years ago and her mother was diagnosed with cancer and sold her house to pay for her treatment, she lived alone in a rental house and had never heard these words again.

Go home? She seemed to have no home.

The red light turned green, but her car didn't move. A horn was heard from behind her. Xu Xian came back to her senses and continued driving, forgetting to reply to the person on the other end of the phone.

Jiang Shibai's smiling face froze when he heard no sound. He glanced at his phone screen and saw that it was on a call. He then whispered in her ear, "Can you hear me, Xianxian?"

The car was driving smoothly. After hearing the sound, Xu Xian finally remembered the question he had just asked. "I'm on my way back. I'll be home in about ten minutes."

The implication is to go home and eat.

Hearing the word "home" from her mouth made Jiang Shibai feel happy. His cold eyebrows bent unconsciously, and he said patiently, "Okay, drive slowly, don't worry, I'll wait for you at home."

Xu Xian hummed, trying hard to dispel the uneasiness in his heart.

I always feel that their conversation is like that of an old married couple.
