Chapter 10 Half Whistle
The jungle was filled with a light mist in the early morning. The rising sun swept away the haze of last night, casting spots of golden light through the dense leaves.
Xiao Zhuo and Shen Yuexi walked one after the other through a quiet and winding path.
Shen Yuexi followed Xiao Zhuo closely, listening to the cheerful chirping of birds in the trees with great interest.
Her eyes swept over Xiao Zhuo's bloody right shoulder, and she was a little worried about his injury.
After all, I only applied hemostatic powder on him last night. Although the wound has stopped bleeding, I don’t know if there will be any subsequent infection.
"Husband, how are you feeling now? Are you feeling unwell?"
Hearing this, Xiao Zhuo turned around and said calmly, "It's all fine now. You treated it in time and handled it properly. Have you studied medicine?"
Shen Yuexi didn't know whether Xiao Zhuo was testing her, but she didn't dare to tell the truth.
Whether it was removing the arrowhead or applying the hemostatic powder, it was all thanks to the universal manufacturing machine. She herself was still a long way from true medical skills.
"I just figured it out," she said, taking a breath of fresh air and making up an excuse. "My life in the Duke's Mansion was extremely difficult. No one cared when I was sick, so I had to fend for myself. That's why I only know a little bit."
After hearing this, Xiao Zhuo nodded thoughtfully.
"Are those who are chasing us really the emperor's guards?" Afraid that Xiao Zhuo would continue asking, Shen Yuexi changed the subject first.
Xiao Zhuo did not answer directly, but just glanced at her quietly and continued walking forward.
It was really done by the emperor.
Shen Yuexi cursed the emperor in her heart.
I didn't expect that the old emperor was so cruel. He just failed in the fight for the throne, so why did he still want to take his own son's life?
Even a tiger wouldn't eat its own cubs, let alone Xiao Zhuo, the prince he personally appointed. He had been stationed at the border for several years and had killed countless enemies. It was neither moral nor rational for the emperor to do such a thing as killing his own son.
It is said that the royal family is cold-hearted, but only now did she feel the cruelty that comes with the pinnacle of power.
She chased to Xiao Zhuo, took off the bamboo tube on her back, pulled out the cork, and handed it to Xiao Zhuo, saying, "Husband, have a drink of water. We have walked so far and haven't met anyone. I guess they have already..."
Before she finished speaking, she heard a familiar voice coming from the woods not far from the road again.
collapse!
This was the terrifying sound she had heard countless times in the dilapidated temple, the sound that could scare her heart to death - the arrow leaving the string.
The voice in her head desperately reminded her to run away. But in reality, she perfectly demonstrated what it meant to be dumbfounded.
Xiao Zhuo stretched out his hand and pushed her away from where she was standing, and at the same time he jumped to the side.
An arrow almost grazed Shen Yuexi's body, passed between the two of them, and pierced the ground diagonally, splashing a string of mud and water.
Shen Yuexi rushed to the side twice and finally managed to steady herself.
Fortunately, Xiao Zhuo reacted quickly, otherwise she would have been hit by the arrow.
She turned her head to look at the place where the sound came from in the woods, and saw a man squatting in the grass. He threw away the bow in his hand in panic and was reaching into his arms to take something out.
Shen Yuexi suddenly remembered that when they were in the cave before, the leader had reminded his men not to fight with the prince when they met him, but to sound the alarm.
Although it is unclear why this man attacked them with a bow and arrow first, is the thing he is trying to take out now the sentry?
She was still in a daze when Xiao Zhuo passed by her like a gust of wind and rushed towards the man.
When Xiao Zhuo was still several meters away from the man, the man had already taken out something from his arms. It was a small emerald green tube, as thick as a finger.
As he retreated hastily, he put one end of the tube in his mouth and puffed up his cheeks.
Shen Yuexi was shocked. That must be the whistle. If this person blew it, the enemies searching the jungle would hear it and rush over.
Two fists cannot beat four hands, and at that time she and Xiao Zhuo can only wait for death.
She felt as if her heart was about to stop beating. She clenched her fists tightly and stood on tiptoe to look at Xiao Zhuo.
Xiao Zhuo was still quite far away, and the man was retreating, trying to create distance. It seemed that it was too late to stop him anyway.
At this time, Xiao Zhuo waved his arm and threw the steel knife in his hand.
Just as the sharp whistle sounded, the steel knife whistled towards him, the blade deeply embedded in the man's chest, cutting off the whistle. The man immediately fell to the ground.
A large flock of birds of various colors were startled by the whistle and flew up from the treetops.
Xiao Zhuo rushed to the man, pulled the knife out of him, grasped the hilt with both hands, stabbed it down again, drew the knife, and turned around to rush towards Shen Yuexi.
"Quick, get out of here quickly," he pointed to the end of the trail, "go there."
The whistle startled the birds and would surely draw the attention of any enemy searching the jungle. Now we had to run for our lives.
Shen Yuexi didn't wait for Xiao Zhuo to rush to her, and ran in the direction he pointed.
After only one night's rest, my tired legs are still extremely sore, but now is not the time to be pretentious. If I run too late, it will just put an end to my life.
She threw away the pheasant meat she had just picked up during a break and the bamboo tube filled with water as she ran. These things would slow down her escape.
Nothing is more important than your life.
Xiao Zhuo caught up with her, took her hand and sprinted along the path.
There was a shouting sound behind me.
Shen Yuexi looked back while running and saw dozens of black dots emerging from the bushes in the distance and converging towards this side.
It came really quickly.
She looked back and found that she had reached the end of the trail.
There was a three-meter-high stone wall in front of me, extending to the left and right. I couldn't see a way to go around it.
When it rains, the roof is leaking; when the ship is late, it encounters headwinds.
As she was frantically looking around, Xiao Zhuo had already run to the bottom of the stone wall, stuck his knife into the ground, crossed his fingers, and shouted to her, "Come here, climb up."
There was no time to be humble, she quickly stepped on Xiao Zhuo's hands, and climbed up with her hands holding the upper edge of the stone wall.
Xiao Zhuo groaned, seemingly in great pain.
His arrow wound couldn't be healed with too much force, so it was probably about to burst.
With Xiao Zhuo's help, Shen Yuexi climbed up the stone wall with her hands and feet, turned around and lay on the edge, stretched out her hand and said, "Husband, hold my hand!"
Xiao Zhuo stretched out his left hand, and Shen Yuexi grasped it with both hands, gritting her teeth and pulling upward with all her strength. However, the rock wall was slippery, and Xiao Zhuo had no place to gain leverage, so he slipped twice in succession.
With a "ding" sound, a feather arrow flew into the air and embedded itself into the crack of the stone wall.
Shen Yuexi looked up and saw that the guards had already caught up with them. The one running in front was drawing his bow and aiming at Xiao Zhuo. He must have shot the first arrow.
"Husband, quickly insert your knife into the crack of the stone wall!" Inspired by the feather arrow, she pointed to the steel knife beside her.
Xiao Zhuo pulled the knife from the ground, assessed the position, and inserted the knife horizontally into the crack of the stone wall. He raised his foot and stepped on the blade.
Two more feather arrows whizzed over, one almost grazed Xiao Zhuo's right arm and pierced into the stone wall, and the other passed over her head.
There was no time to be afraid. Shen Yuexi grabbed Xiao Zhuo's hands with both hands and pulled upwards with all her might, finally pulling Xiao Zhuo up.
She raised the back of her hand to wipe the cold sweat from her forehead, smiled and stepped back: "It's so thrilling, let's run."
"Be careful!" Xiao Zhuo shouted coldly behind her.
What?
Before she could understand the meaning of this sentence, she found that her foot had missed the mark. Her body tilted and she fell backwards.
"Ah!" she screamed and looked back.
There was a bare steep slope behind.
Damn...how can I be so unlucky?
Xiao Zhuo flew over and hugged her.
The two of them hugged each other and rolled down the steep slope.
