Chapter 91: Trapped Beast

Chapter 91: Trapped Beast

A strong wind blew, and the narrow passage between the two mountains was instantly engulfed in flames.

The blazing flames rose over ten feet high, thick smoke billowed, and the flames illuminated the entire pass. Everywhere was filled with the shrieking of agonizing beasts and the wailing of horses. The air was pungent and unpleasant with the smell of burning. Countless shadows twisted on the stone walls.

Danmuji in the passage below was rushing left and right like a trapped beast.

He was now in the middle of the passage. Thick, choking smoke filled the air, and the ground was littered with rocks and burning wood. He felt as if he were in a massive furnace, the scorching air burning and blisters on his exposed skin. Several Xirong soldiers, engulfed in flames, wailed and rolled around him.

He glared at the mountain, wishing he could burn the night away with his gaze.

By the light of the fire, he saw the moon-white figure halfway up the mountain. It was the enemy commander, the one who had ambushed him.

The man that Xiu Muye mentioned.

He was handing the bow and arrow back to the soldier behind him. Then he put his hands behind his back, his eyes solemn, neither sad nor happy, as if he had already known the outcome of this battle.

Who is he? Is he the one sent by the vassal king to ambush him?

But then I thought it was impossible. If that prince had such an outstanding and wise general, why would King Doma have been able to capture two cities in a row?

He stared at the man with bloodshot eyes, trying to see his face clearly. However, the man just glanced at him and then looked away indifferently.

That complete neglect infuriated Danmuji.

He roared, rushed towards the stone wall, stepped on the corpses of the Xirong soldiers on the ground, and jumped up the hillside. With his left hand, he grabbed a corpse on the ground and blocked it in front of him. With his right hand, he held the knife and walked up the hill step by step.

The stones hit the corpse in front of him, making a dull sound, but it couldn't stop him from moving forward.

Several men in civilian clothes jumped out from the darkness, waving wooden sticks and hitting him.

Danmuji threw the corpse away and slashed with his sword, slicing through all the wooden sticks in front of him. But the men showed no fear and continued to rush forward, holding the remaining half-broken sticks.

That's right. The look in these men's eyes definitely didn't belong to ordinary villagers. Their fearless fighting spirit proved they were veterans of the battlefield.

His thousand-man team was indeed ambushed by the Yan army.

Although he didn't understand why these soldiers only had simple wooden sticks in their hands and were not wearing armor, he would not show mercy and all the enemies deserved to die.

In a flash of cold light, the two men in the front had been stabbed and fell to the ground. Danmu quickly drew out the bloody blade, and a flash of cold light swept across it. Like a tiger among a flock of sheep, all who were caught were killed, and he killed his way to the mountainside.

Behind him, more than a dozen bodies lay scattered, and several wounded men struggled and wailed in a pool of blood. He didn't turn back to finish off the enemy; his target was the enemy's commander, the man standing halfway up the mountain.

Although he was ambushed, there were still hundreds of warriors outside the pass. As long as he killed the enemy commander, the battle would still end with his victory.

The sword slashed diagonally, slashed horizontally... bringing up puffs of blood, until it was blocked with a "clang" sound.

Danmuji felt his hands were a little numb.

The force of this parry shows that the opponent is an enemy worth taking seriously.

Danmuji took a step back and looked at the burly, bronze-faced man holding a knife in front of him. He had the air of a general and seemed to be a general under that man.

"I am Captain Danmuji," Danmuji pointed his sword at the enemy, "General, please state your name."

The man held the sword across his chest: "Qiu Liming."

"Very good, prepare to die!" Dan Muji didn't waste any words. He held the sword with both hands, raised it above his head, took a step forward, and chopped it down at Qiu Liming's head.

His physical strength also had its limits, he could not fight endlessly, he had to make a quick decision. He used all his strength in this blow.

Seeing that the other party was coming at him aggressively, Qiu Liming held his sword to block.

With a "clang" sound, the two swords collided, and a string of sparks exploded.

Qiu Liming's knees went weak and he was forced to kneel on one knee by the blow.

He had previously encountered Western Rong scouts and cavalry, and to save Yang Cong, he had killed over ten of them until he was exhausted. Upon returning, his strength barely recovered, he rejoined the battle. Seeing Danmuji slaughtering several men as he charged up the mountain, he stepped forward. He thought he could hold him back, but Danmuji's strength was beyond his expectations, and his single strike carried such force.

This was a life-or-death crisis, leaving him no time for overthinking. He rolled sideways, barely avoiding Danmu Ji's stabbing blade.

Danmu quickly drew his sword, caught up with Qiu Liming, and slashed again.

Qiu Li knew that the opponent was too strong and could not be defended, so he was about to dodge. However, he did not expect that Dan Muji's knife had no power at all, it was just a feint, and he raised his foot and kicked him hard in the chest.

This kick sent Qiu Liming flying, and he hit a big tree with a "bang", and the knife fell out of his hand into the grass.

Qiu Liming felt as if his chest was blocked, and even breathing was difficult. He covered his chest with one hand and tried to stand up with the other hand. However, his legs were weak and he couldn't stand up at all.

"The generals of Dayan, haha, are too weak."

Danmuji walked towards Qiu Liming while laughing.

"Protect General Qiu!" Two soldiers shouted and rushed out from the shadows.

"You are overestimating yourself. You dare to appear in front of me without even a weapon!" Danmu Ji roared and swung his sword continuously.

Qiu Liming watched two soldiers slain tragically by Danmu's sharp sword, heartbroken. These soldiers were loyal and devoted, having followed him out of the border to seek his lord. Yet, before they could achieve fame and fortune, they had already perished on the battlefield.

He was now unarmed and had no way of resisting Danmuji's attack.

Am I going to die here today?

"General Qiu!" A clear and pleasant young woman's voice suddenly sounded from behind him. "Go on."

Then a dark object flew towards him with the sound of wind.

Qiu Liming reached out and grabbed the thing. It felt heavy in his hand. He took a look in the moonlight and found that it was a large wooden shield.

He didn't remember any blacksmiths or carpenters in the village who could make this, and the Xirong cavalry didn't carry shields. Where did this shield come from?

While he was still in a daze, Danmuji had already rushed to his side and slashed with his sword. Qiu Liming quickly raised his shield. With a dull "thud", Danmuji's sword directly split the shield and embedded itself tightly inside, without damaging his shield-holding arm.

Before Danmuji could draw his sword, Qiu Liming rolled over with his shield and used the weight of his body to force the sword out of Danmuji's hand.

"Kill!" Three soldiers who came to support shouted and rushed forward, stabbing their sharpened wooden spears into Danmuji's chest and abdomen.

“If…if it weren’t for that shield…” Danmuji’s burly body collapsed to the ground, his hands gripping the spear shaft that was stuck in his body, blood continuously flowing from his mouth, “Damn it!”

If the shield had not embedded the sword, these soldiers holding wooden spears would have been no match for it.

Qiu Liming took the knife off the shield, stood up, staggered to Dan Muji, and held the knife handle high.

As the cold light pierced down, Danmu Ji's voice stopped abruptly.

"General Qiu." Several soldiers rushed up and supported Qiu Liming.

Qiu Liming pushed the soldier aside and said, "I'm fine. Go and inform the lord that the enemy general is dead... Oh, that woman who just threw me the shield sounds so familiar. Where is she?"

Fortunately, she threw out her shield in time, otherwise she would have died under Danmu's sharp knife.

"General Qiu, that woman... is the lord's wife."

"It's the Lord's wife!" Qiu Liming was horrified. "Why would she come to such a dangerous place? Where is she now?"

"She went to the mountain to look for the lord."
