Chapter 6 An unexpected surprise
The two fled deep into the jungle, and Shen Yuexi turned around and looked behind her.
Through the dense bushes, the flames were already far away from them. The people chasing them had obviously lost their way and were wandering around like headless flies.
She stood there gasping for a long time, finally catching her breath and swallowing the fever-reducing medicine in her hand.
The rain gradually stopped, and she glanced at the pitch-black surroundings, still haunted by the thrilling moment just now. But now that they had entered the jungle, it would be even harder for pursuers to find them.
"Husband?" She tried to call Xiao Zhuo.
Xiao Zhuo did not answer. Since the two of them stopped, he sat on a rock, stuck the knife into the ground, and held the handle with both hands, strangely silent.
According to Shen Yuexi's understanding, the two of them had finally escaped, so even if they didn't celebrate, they wouldn't be so quiet.
Could it be that he...
The smell of blood wafted into her nose.
Her heart tightened, and Shen Yuexi quickly walked to Xiao Zhuo's side and reached out to touch his back.
Her hand touched the cold, hard arrow shaft, which startled her. Xiao Zhuo groaned, obviously because the shaking of the arrow shaft caused him pain.
"Don't touch it." He whispered weakly.
The first thought that came to Shen Yuexi's mind was that it was over.
In the vast jungle, if something happens to Xiao Zhuo, how can she escape the enemy's pursuit by herself?
But when was Xiao Zhuo hit by the arrow?
Looking back, when the two of them were fleeing on horseback, arrows were flying like locusts behind them, and even the horse was hit by several arrows. How could Xiao Zhuo be safe and sound?
She was fine thanks to the fact that she was sitting in front of Xiao Zhuo on the horse.
She felt a little guilty at the moment, and reached out to touch the arrow shaft, and found that the arrow had hit Xiao Zhuo's right shoulder blade. Fortunately, it was not a fatal wound.
Xiao Zhuo patted her hand gently and said, "It's okay, it's not fatal."
That being said, an arrow stuck in the flesh is unbearable, even if it's not fatal. It's better to find a place to rest and deal with the arrow in Xiao Zhuo's body first.
The jungle was even quieter late at night, and for some reason, the people who had chased in stopped moving.
Could it be that there are other dangers in the jungle?
Without hesitation, she stood up and helped Xiao Zhuo up: "Come on, I'll help you up."
Although the rain had stopped, both of them were soaked and had to find a dry place to dry their clothes first.
The moon peeked out from under the edge of the dark clouds. In the dim light, Shen Yuexi looked around, only to see trees everywhere, unable to tell which way was which.
After they walked for a while, they saw twinkling lights of fire in the distance, which allowed her to clearly see that the people who were searching had not given up.
She supported Xiao Zhuo, and the two of them walked deeper into the jungle, one step deep and one step shallow.
Even though she was so tired that her legs could hardly move, she still didn't dare to stop to rest. She finally slowed down after she could no longer see the fire outside the jungle.
The terrain ahead gradually rose, and the sound of a gurgling stream grew clearer. Xiao Zhuo glanced around, raised his hand, pointed in a direction, and said, "They can't find us for the time being. Let's go there."
Shen Yuexi looked in the direction of his gesture and noticed that there was a hole behind the half-human-high grass.
That place was covered with lush vegetation and was a good place to hide. If Xiao Zhuo hadn't reminded her, she wouldn't have noticed there was a cave there.
She took the lead and used a branch to push aside the grass covered with water droplets. Just as she took two steps towards the cave, a black thing suddenly fluttered out from the grass and pounced towards her.
This thing appeared too suddenly, Shen Yuexi was caught off guard and was so scared that she almost screamed.
Xiao Zhuo was standing behind her. Without saying a word, she grabbed Xiao Zhuo's arm and hid behind him.
"Don't be afraid, it's a pheasant." Xiao Zhuo said in a soothing tone.
Hiding behind Xiao Zhuo, Shen Yuexi looked over nervously and saw a colorful pheasant landed on the ground, flapping its wings and cooing as it dived into the grass.
Patting her chest with her hand, she smiled sheepishly and said, "I was so scared. I thought it was some kind of ferocious beast."
The two entered the cave. Although the rain was heavy outside, the cave was located on a higher ground and no water got in. The inside was filled with the unique aroma of herbs.
She groped around in the dark and found a protruding stone. She helped Xiao Zhuo sit down. Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly kicked something with a "clang".
She squatted down and reached out to touch it. Her eyes lit up. It was actually a bowl. She couldn't help but whispered in surprise: "Husband, I touched a bowl."
Xiao Zhuo said, "This should be a cave used by people who collect herbs to take shelter from the rain. If you look around, you should find something like flint."
Shen Yuexi followed his instructions and searched for it. First, she found some unburned charcoal and straw on the ground. Then, she searched around the charcoal pile and found a stone. It was hard to see clearly in the dark, so she thought it must be the flint that Xiao Zhuo had mentioned.
She picked up the stone and handed it to Xiao Zhuo, saying, "My dear, there's some charcoal and straw on the ground, and I found this stone. Is it flint?"
Xiao Zhuo took it and asked, "Where is the charcoal? Take me there."
Shen Yuexi took his hand and walked to the charcoal, squatting down and gathering the thatch together.
As soon as I raised my head, I heard a "ding" sound in my ear, and a small spark burst out from between the flint and the steel knife and fell on the thatch.
"Wow!" she couldn't help but exclaim in admiration.
In her time, this ancient method of making fire had long since disappeared. But in this backward ancient time, in the absence of advanced tools, this primitive method was actually the most effective.
"Using flint to strike fire is an essential skill for marching and fighting."
After Xiao Zhuo finished speaking, he took a deep breath and rubbed the steel knife on the flint several times. Two sparks fell again, one of which fell on the thatch and lit up a red light the size of an incense stick head.
Shen Yuexi had been waiting for this moment for a long time. She quickly fanned the thatch twice with her hands, and small flames immediately rose from it.
She was so excited that she was about to cheer, but a thick smoke rose from the thatch and rushed into her mouth and nose, making her tears come out and she started coughing continuously.
She covered her mouth and nose in a panic and waved her sleeves left and right to fan away the smoke.
As the smoke dissipated and the flames rose, she finally saw the whole cave clearly.
Just as Xiao Zhuo had said, this was a cave used for shelter from the rain. It wasn't very deep, extending about three or four meters from the entrance to the end. It was covered with several layers of thatch, seemingly for lying down and resting.
At the head of the thatched bed were piled a number of medicinal herbs, and at the other end were several bundles of dry firewood. Beneath the firewood lay a thatched nest, and inside it lay several pheasant eggs.
This is such an unexpected surprise.
She was just worried about how their clothes were soaking wet, and they were cold and hungry, which was really hard to endure. Now the fire was lit and even the food was ready.
I really have to thank that pheasant just now.
She picked up the pheasant eggs from the thatched nest and handed them to Xiao Zhuo, saying with a smile, "Husband, you roast the eggs while I go outside to get some water."
Xiao Zhuo did not answer. The steel knife and stone in his hand fell to the ground at the same time, making a clanging sound.
