Chapter 130: A Bowl of Porridge
Late at night, the people in the general's mansion had already fallen asleep, resting and gathering their strength in anticipation of their departure tomorrow. Qin Xiangnuan secretly opened the door, seeing that no one was around, and tiptoed to the door of the warehouse in the backyard. She opened a crack and slipped in sideways.
The warehouse in Hei Lao's house had not been used for a long time. It was covered with dust and empty.
Qin Xiangnuan closed her eyes and entered the space. After a period of inactivity, the space's supplies had been replenished, and the hens in the chicken coop had returned to their original number. However, if Qin Xiangnuan got too close, they would flutter their wings and fly away. It seemed that the hens that had survived a while ago had said a lot of bad things about Qin Xiangnuan to the newcomer.
Without wasting much time, she went straight to the produce shelf and picked out potatoes that had sprouted.
These were all left for Hei Lao Da and his men to plant, but there were so many that Qin Xiangnuan had to carry them over and over again. Even with the spatial buff, she was exhausted and her back ached. Thinking about the village's land issues, Qin Xiangnuan also dragged out some fertilizer and food seeds that might be used next year, sorted them into categories, and piled them on the floor of the warehouse.
The originally empty place was gradually filled up. Qin Xiangnuan clapped her hands in satisfaction, and stood with her hands on her hips admiring her masterpiece.
The reason they had asked the underworld boss to wait until the next day before they left to look at the warehouse was because they didn't want them to thank Jiang Lin in person. Jiang Lin was a perfect candidate to take the blame. The underworld boss and the second-in-command both knew he was the crown prince, so it made sense that he could have gotten these things. However, if the truth was revealed, not only would he be unable to explain the origins of these things, but it would also make Jiang Lin and the people in the general's mansion suspicious of him.
Here, Qin Xiangnuan could no longer bring out the excuse of the Bodhisattva appearing.
"I hope this can help them." Qin Xiangnuan looked at the sky outside which was gradually getting brighter, rubbed her aching shoulders, and pushed the door open and walked out of the warehouse. As soon as she walked out, she saw a familiar figure appear at the corner in front of her.
Oh no, why is Jiang Lin here? What a coincidence! What is he doing wandering around the yard?
Qin Xiangnuan muttered to herself, quickly covering her face with her hands and trying to sneak away. But after taking just two steps, she heard Jiang Lin's voice calling from behind. He narrowed his eyes, his gaze fixed on the closed warehouse door, and asked in a clear voice, "Third Miss? Why are you here?"
"Haha, aren't you here too?"
Qin Xiangnuan tried to change the subject by blaming Jiang Lin. Looking at Jiang Lin's expression, she asked speculatively, "Are you here for morning exercise too?"
"Morning exercise?" Jiang Lin sized Qin Xiangnuan up and slowly approached. He was a head taller than her, and when he was really close, he felt a strong sense of oppression. Qin Xiangnuan held her breath, observing his movements intently, and trying to move slowly and inconspicuously, to get Jiang Lin out of the dangerous warehouse.
Jiang Lin raised his hand, plucked a bit of straw from Qin Xiangnuan's hair, and placed it in front of her eyes. He said lightly, "Miss Third's morning exercise is to go to the fields to cut rice, or to crawl around in the straw stacks? Next time, why don't you take me with you so that I can broaden my horizons and see what's out there?" How could this person be so vicious? When he was being cunning, he really didn't need to use dirty words to insult others.
Qin Xiangnuan muttered in her heart, but could only endure it with a smile, tugging at Jiang Lin's sleeve, "It's just a little trick, not worth mentioning."
"You're up so early, you must have missed breakfast. Let's go to the front and see if there's anything to eat in the kitchen. I'm a little hungry..." Qin Xiangnuan clutched her stomach, pretending to have a stomachache. She was being overly deliberate. Jiang Lin turned his head to look at the warehouse, knowing there must be something fishy going on. But after hearing Qin Xiangnuan complain about a stomachache, he hesitated for a moment before following her out without further questioning.
In the kitchen, Liu and Zou were already cooking porridge.
Qin Xiangnuan brought Jiang Lin over, and Liu served them two bowls of hot porridge. Qin Xiangnuan stood by the stove with the porridge in her hands, smiling and pursing her lips. She praised very sweetly, "The porridge made by mother and second aunt is delicious. There is obviously no sweet stuff in it, but it tastes soft and sticky, and it leaves a lingering fragrance on your lips and teeth!"
"You can praise a bowl of porridge like this, you really know how to flatter people."
Zou was so delighted by her that she even shared one of the eggs in the pot with her. "Qin Feng couldn't have any of it, but you got it," Qin Xiangnuan took a big bite and mumbled, "My cousin doesn't like eggs, he only likes meat. Don't worry, Auntie. Next time I hunt game, I'll save a chicken drumstick for him! I'll definitely return it."
"Okay, Nuannuan knows what's going on best."
Zou shook her head, feeling particularly helpless towards Qin Xiangnuan. Liu wiped the corners of Qin Xiangnuan's mouth with a handkerchief, her eyes full of love as she said, "You're already such a grown-up girl, yet you still look so messy when eating. It's okay at home, but you're out there now. How will people see you?" Although it was a scolding, Liu's tone was gentle when she said it. Qin Xiangnuan was naturally not afraid and just put her face in front of her, "Don't you have mother? Since mother is taking care of you, I don't have to do anything."
“This girl…”
Liu looked at Jiang Lin apologetically. Noticing that he had been silent for a long time, she spoke on behalf of Qin Xiangnuan, "We've spoiled Nuannuan to the point of being lawless. The prince is laughing at her." Jiang Lin came to his senses and shook his head with a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "Madam, you're too kind. I'm actually a little envious."
"Isn't that how you are at home?"
Qin Xiangnuan put down the empty bowl, recalling Anliu and Anfeng's words, thinking that his life in Xiaoyao Marquis's mansion was easy. But looking at Jiang Lin's expression, he saw something different. Jiang Lin looked at Baizhou, "My father and mother are very kind to me. No matter what I want to do, they will agree to it. But... no one in the mansion would be like you, talking and interacting without any distinction between status."
"Those good things always feel a bit alienated."
Jiang Lin seemed to have let down his guard. His words made Qin Xiangnuan and Liu look at each other, neither of them knowing how to comfort her. Jiang Lin also noticed their embarrassment and hurriedly said with a smile, "Sorry, I didn't mean it."
Liu pondered for a moment, her gaze shifting slightly as she looked at Jiang Lin. "Perhaps it's because the Marquis's residence has so many rules and so many secret eyes. Although the Marquis and his wife want to be closer to you, they're constrained by those things. Don't take it to heart, my son. Parents always love their children, so how can there be any estrangement? It's just a matter of expressing it in different ways."
"Thank you for your comfort, ma'am."
Jiang Lin nodded slightly and replied.
