Chapter 49: The Old Lady Catches a Cold
The next few days were all mountain roads, and because of the extremely cold weather, the mountains became very dangerous.
Not to mention the sharp rocks lining the path, the melted ice and snow, when exposed to low temperatures, had frozen into a thin layer of frost, making it slippery and impossible to stand. The welcoming pines lining the path were covered in snow, and even the slightest noise would cause the snow to fall. Lighter lumps could freeze you, while heavier ones could injure you.
The group of people from the general's mansion walked very carefully, almost moving forward hand in hand.
“Ahem…”
Qin Xiangnuan supported Liu and took two steps. She heard the sound of Old Madam Qin coughing behind her.
She stopped and looked back, seeing that Madam Qin was staggering and coughing uncontrollably every now and then. "Mother, has Grandmother been feeling unwell these days?" Qin Xiangnuan asked worriedly. Liu nodded, "Mother used to have a chronic illness. Every winter, she relied on herbal medicine to keep herself nourished. Your father would bring back some supplements given by His Majesty when he returned from the battles, so there's nothing serious going on."
"But what she fears most is the cold. You see... the weather has turned cold in recent days, and her illness has worsened."
Liu's eyes were also full of worry. The road of exile was naturally more dangerous for the elderly than for them.
"Can anyone remember the prescription for my grandmother's medicine?"
Qin Xiangnuan asked in a low voice, and Liu blinked her eyes at the memory, "Maybe it's left there by my second brother's wife. Later, I'll ask her to come and show it to you. But our journey is bumpy, and even if we have a prescription, we don't know where to get the medicine and boil it." They are criminals, and the inconveniences are naturally not as great as when they were at the general's mansion. "Don't worry, mother, I have my own way."
Qin Xiangnuan gave everyone a reassurance.
After only two hours of walking, it was already dark. Fearing the danger of continuing at night, everyone hurriedly set up tents on the spot, preparing to camp outdoors. The temperature in the mountains was several degrees colder than outside, and even with a warm fire, people still shivered.
Beibei was jumping and running on the spot, and the white air exhaled from her mouth turned into mist, which she deliberately blew into different shapes.
Qin Feng picked up the branches cut from the tree and threw them into the bonfire, making the fire a little brighter.
"Cousin, I'm going to go over there and see if I can find something to eat."
Qin Xiangnuan knew that if she didn't eat some meat tonight to keep warm, something bad might happen. She hurriedly said a few words and headed off into the dark woods, not giving Qin Feng a chance to catch up. When she reached a slightly secluded spot, she closed her eyes, stepped into the space, and pulled the two rabbits out by their ears. Then her eyes fell on the wild boar nearby. "You're unlucky today."
"If you cooperate with me honestly later, I can make your death quicker. If you run around, I will definitely not let you go!"
Qin Xiangnuan sharpened her knife and threatened. The wild boar seemed to understand her words and stood there, avoiding her gaze, refusing to move a single step. When she whipped out the dagger, the wild boar finally moved reluctantly, meeting its death.
Wouldn’t that be a bit too cruel?
Qin Xiangnuan was also reflecting on herself, but it was just a brief thought, and soon the desire for oral pleasure overcame the slight guilt in her heart.
You have to keep living.
She urged the wild boars toward the campsite and was about to call Qin Feng to help. Qin Xiangnuan took a few deep breaths and deliberately pretended to be happy and excited. Before she could even shout, she heard Qin Feng's hoarse voice shout, "Grandma! Grandma!"
Suddenly, the garrison was in chaos. Old Madam Qin leaned against a thick tree trunk with a purple face, and her breathing became short.
She closed her eyes tightly and could not open them no matter how much the people around her shouted.
Qin Xiangnuan didn't care about the wild boar at all. She hurried over, pushed everyone away, squatted in front of Old Madam Qin, and took her pulse. "Floating pulse, so floating? Why is your body so cold?" She realized something was wrong and touched Old Madam Qin's neck. Her body temperature was much lower than that of ordinary people.
"how so!"
Qin Xiangnuan patted Old Madam Qin, calling her "Grandma" as she checked, only to find that most of the cotton wool inside her clothes had disappeared. The originally thick clothes that could keep out the wind were now only a thin layer. Let alone keeping out the wind and cold, it wouldn't be too hot even if she wore it in the summer! She turned her head and looked at Qin Feng, "What are you still standing there for! Bring me Grandma's cloak, where is it?"
"Here..."
Zou picked up the cloak from behind and said apologetically, "Beibei was a little cold when she went out to play tonight. She kept complaining about being cold, so mother covered her with the cloak for a while. I didn't expect that..." Zou looked at Qin Yi apologetically. Qin Yi knew that Madam Qin was a person who loved the younger generations, and he thought that she was hiding it from everyone, so he didn't say anything.
Qin Xiangnuan wrapped Old Madam Qin tightly with her cloak, took out silver needles and inserted them into several of her acupuncture points.
In the blink of an eye, she squeezed out a little bit of dirty blood from the old lady's blood vessels.
"Mother's complexion seems to have improved a little."
Zou nervously watched Madam Qin's condition, excitedly saying that this was all Qin Xiangnuan could do now, but it wasn't enough to completely keep Madam Qin safe. The cold in her body had already penetrated too deeply. Qin Xiangnuan asked Qin Feng to light the fire a little brighter, her eyes falling on Qin Xiangsong's cotton-padded jacket, which looked much thicker than a few days ago. "Come here."
"what you up to!"
Qi hugged Qin Xiangsong and stared at Qin Xiangnuan as if she were an enemy.
Qin Xiangnuan didn't waste any words with him. She just pulled up Qin Xiangsong's collar and took out a lot of cotton wool from it. "Explain to me, what's going on?" Qin Xiangsong was stared at by so many eyes and burst into tears. He wiped his tears and said, "My grandmother gave it to me. I said I was cold, so she put it in my clothes!"
"You take it if I give it to you! You've grown up like this, don't you have any common sense?"
"The cotton wool for these clothes is rationed. If I give it to you, grandma will have less. You are a child and afraid of the cold, and grandma is old. Isn't she afraid?" Qin Xiangnuan pointed at Qin Xiangsong and spoke bluntly, scolding him so much that he burst into tears immediately.
Qin Xiangsong wiped his tears with a wronged look on his face and wanted to run back to find Qi.
But just as he took two steps, he was grabbed by Qin Xiangnuan and could no longer move. He could only hang in the air and flap his feet.
