Chapter 73: Night Terror at the Inn

Chapter 73 A Nightmare at the Inn

"Send a message to the master: the snow has delayed our journey, and our return date is uncertain."

In the inn, in a room with an incense burner, Madam Wu sat on the warm kang, listening to the maid's report and whispering instructions to one of the hunched attendants.

The attendant left immediately. Nanny Wu rubbed her brows, feeling vaguely uneasy.

"You all need to be alert. My heart is pounding and I feel like something's wrong."

"Don't worry, Mammy. We have people working in secret, so I don't think anything will go wrong."

"I hope so! But we still have to be careful and never let our guard down."

"yes."

Bai Li next door looked around and said to Yuan Mo, "It's not peaceful tonight. We have to be careful."

"Did you figure it out? There were spies exploring the route during the day. They must have followed us all the way."

"All I see are unfamiliar faces. Did they change people?"

"Yes, they change their outfits or people every other day, so we only see unfamiliar faces. That way, even if we notice them, we won't think too much of it."

"I really don't understand who would go to so much trouble to deal with two girls like us."

"That's understandable if you think about it. We're going to the Simon Palace, where the king of Simon and the royal family live. They have to be cautious with us, two outsiders.

Secondly, the emperor has three palaces and six courtyards besides Yu Ji. Yu Ji's favor naturally offended the other concubines, and there are many who want to get rid of us sisters."

"I don't know how skilled Madam Wu and the others are. If they can't defeat us, are we just going to die?"

"Don't worry. If we die, Aunt Wu will be unable to report to the authorities. If it comes to that, we will just act accordingly."

Bai Li said nothing. The maid brought dinner into the room and left, saying that she would be waiting outside and to call if there was anything.

Bai Li saw that the maid's steps were steady and she must be a martial artist, and her martial arts skills should be better than Yuan Mo's.

After eating two mutton buns and a bowl of mutton soup, Bai Li put down the bowl.

Maybe it was because of the jade bracelet Bai Li gave her, or because her master had given her instructions, but Nanny Wu didn't treat them badly along the way.

They had good food, clothing and other necessities, and when it snowed, they were given cotton-padded jackets and winter dresses.

She waited for Yuan Mo to finish eating, then asked the maid to come in and clean up the dishes and set up the room.

"What are you doing with all this?"

Yuan Mo looked at the door and windows in confusion, and asked about the dense "spider webs".

"You'll find out in a moment."

Bai Li finished the work in no time, clapped his hands and said, "Alright, now we can sleep soundly!"

"That's it?"

"Yes, that's it. It can keep us safe. But it's best if we don't have to use it."

If it is used, it means that Nanny Wu can no longer hold on.

Although Yuan Mo didn't quite believe it, seeing Bai Li's confident look, he still believed it a little.

The kang was being heated in the north, and the room was as warm as spring. Bai Li took off his heavy coat, got on the kang, and lay down, sighing with comfort.

"Go get some sleep. There will definitely be something exciting happening in the middle of the night. You won't be able to sleep even if you want to."

Bai Li patted the seat beside him, signaling Yuan Mo, who was fidgeting with caution, to lie down.

Yuan Mo sighed when he saw her carefree look.

If she hadn't seen her skills with her own eyes, she would have been worried to death by now.

In the middle of the night, everything was quiet and most of the guests in an inn in Simon Country were immersed in sweet dreams.

The Yu Chang sisters were sleeping soundly in the room, while Nanny Wu and others were guarding in the next room.

Suddenly, a slight noise broke the silence.

"What's that sound?"

The maid stood up alertly.

Before she could react, a group of masked men in black broke in through the window and headed straight for the room of the Yu Chang sisters next door.

"There is an assassin! Protect the young lady!" Nanny Wu shouted loudly and rushed to the sisters' room with her maids and followers.

"Who are you? How dare you assassinate me?" Nanny Wu shouted angrily.

"Stop talking nonsense and give me your life!" one of the men in black answered coldly.

The followers started fighting with the men in black, and the sound of swords clashing could be heard in the inn.

"Miss, wake up!"

While resisting the men in black, the maid tried to wake up the two sisters in the room.

Yu Chang was awakened and asked in panic, "What happened?"

"Miss, don't be afraid, don't come out, we are here!" shouted Nanny Wu.

The two sisters hid in the corner, listening quietly to the chaos outside.

"Who sent you?" Nanny Wu asked while beating them.

"Hmph, if you want to blame someone, blame yourself for offending someone you shouldn't have offended!" said the man in black viciously.

Nanny Wu fought hard against the attacks of the men in black, shouting, "Even if we die, we won't let you succeed!"

"I'm just a slave, there's no need to work so hard, right?"

The man in black tried to sow discord while fighting, but he didn't expect these people to be so skilled in martial arts and difficult to deal with, which disrupted his plan.

"Bah! Aren't you still working for your master? You're just the pot calling the kettle black!"

Nanny Wu was not affected. She became more and more courageous as she fought, and did not let them get close to the door at all.

Several followers also fought desperately. Gradually, the man in black found that he could not take the city down after a long attack and began to get anxious.

"Quick battle, quick decision!" shouted the leader of the men in black.

"Don't even think about it!" Nanny Wu shot back.

After a fierce battle, Nanny Wu and her followers gradually gained the upper hand. The men in black began to suffer casualties and gradually could not hold on.

"Retreat!" Seeing that the situation was not good, the leader of the men in black gave the order to retreat.

"Don't let them get away!"

The followers wanted to give chase.

Nanny Wu shouted, "Don't chase after the desperate enemy. Protect the young lady first!"

Watching the black-clad figure flee, Aunt Wu breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Miss, it's okay. We've repelled the killer."

"Thank you, Aunt Wu and the brothers!"

Yu Chang thanked her loudly at the door of the room, and Yu Yu's voice also came out, and only then did Nanny Wu feel relieved.

"Are you all right?"

"It's okay, they can't get in. Thank you again for saving my life."

The two sisters were sensible, well-behaved, respectful and polite along the way, which made Aunt Wu pay more attention to them.

After hearing the reply, Nanny Wu finally felt relieved.

He let them rest in peace before waving goodbye and letting them go.

The noise was too loud and there were several bodies on the ground. The innkeeper had already reported the matter to the authorities. Nanny Wu and a few others were called in for questioning, recording information, etc. It took quite a while.

By the time they returned to their room and sat down, it was already past midnight.

"Mammy, you can rest in peace. I will be the one guarding you for the rest of the night."

"That's fine. Tell the people outside to take turns resting. They can't all collapse from exhaustion."

"Thank you, Ma'am, for your consideration."

"Then I'll go to sleep first. You guys stay alert. It's your turn to rest during the day."

It’s not that Nanny Wu was kind and considerate of the servants, she was just worried that they were exhausted and she wouldn’t be able to withstand another wave of assassins.

The maid thanked her again before Madam Wu lay down on the kang.
