Chapter 11: Blessings and Disasters
The two baskets of pears were like a ray of hope for the impoverished Su family.
The next day, before dawn, Su Da and Su Er got up. Taking advantage of the time when they would not be easily discovered, they covered the baskets with straw curtains and carried the baskets to the town.
After all, there are so many pears that it would be too eye-catching if they were taken out.
It also cannot withstand deep digging.
Dahuai Village is located in the northern part of North Vietnam, and has been experiencing wind and snow for months since the beginning of winter.
After mid-winter, the snow on the ground is so thick that it covers the ankles.
Going back and forth to the town would be too much for anyone without some perseverance.
Old Mrs. Su held Tianbao in her arms and sat opposite the wooden bed in the inner room, staring coldly at the old man on the bed.
A small brazier was lit beside the bed to drive away the coldness in the room.
Old man Su didn't dare to look the old woman in the eye. He lay there with his eyes closed, feeling guilty, and cried out in pain.
Old Lady Su sneered, "Are you crying out in pain now? What were you doing yesterday? That half bag of flour, let's just say twenty copper coins, right? When the eldest and second sons come back later, we'll figure out how much you'll have to pay for the medicine for your old leg."
"...Well, look at what you said. The situation was urgent and I didn't have time to think too much. Before I could react, I grabbed the flour bag. Didn't I expect my leg to be broken?" Old Man Su opened his eyes and glanced at his wife quickly. "Besides, what medicine do I need? The broken part has been bandaged. I will be almost healed in ten days or half a month. It's a waste of money to apply medicine... No one listens to me. You insist on selling pears to buy medicine. It's better to buy more rice and flour for the family to survive the winter. Ouch... Ouch..."
"If your old bones were as tough as your mouth, you wouldn't have broken them yesterday!"
“…Ouch! Ouch!”
"Alright, stop yelling. Take a good rest and save your energy. I won't punish you today."
Old Man Su stopped shouting, but his face felt humiliated.
Although their sweet baby is only two days old, he is smart and can understand what they say.
His wife really didn't give him any face at all.
"Is Sweetie asleep?"
"A newborn baby needs to sleep after eating, and only wakes up for a short while a day." Old Lady Su couldn't suppress her worry and whispered, "Didn't you see the pears all over the floor yesterday... I was really worried that Tianbao would get hurt. Can such a powerful magical power be used casually? Sigh."
Old Man Su was silent for a moment, then spoke to comfort his wife, "Don't overthink it. Look how soundly your granddaughter is sleeping. It shouldn't be a big deal. Otherwise, such a young child would definitely cry and make a fuss if she felt uncomfortable."
Old Lady Su glared at him immediately, "Nonsense! My sweet baby is so well behaved. Apart from that first cry when he was born, he has never made any noise!"
"..." I was trying to comfort you, but you started to blame me without any reason.
Old Man Su lay in bed unable to move. He had only seen his granddaughter twice since she was born. Seeing the child sleeping peacefully opposite him, he became jealous and said, "Old lady, bring Tianbao over and put her next to me to sleep. Covering her with a quilt will keep her warm."
How could Mrs. Su not know what her husband was thinking? Then she thought about the baby's soft bones and it was really hard to hold him all the time. Then she stood up and gently put the baby on the inside of the wooden bed.
This way, Yuelan can rest in peace and she can also free up her hands to work. The kitchen needs to be rebuilt. She can't always cook in the main room.
"If Tianbao wakes up, call me and I'll bring her over."
"Okay!"
A small baby that can be held in two hands is sleeping beside me. It is very small and soft.
Her sleeping face was sweet, her little nose moved slightly with her breathing, and her body exuded a faint scent of milk.
Old Man Su felt as soft as if it were soaked in water.
Cautiously reaching out his hand, he gently touched the child's face, which looked like a peeled egg. Old Man Su murmured, "Blessings often come with misfortunes, and misfortunes often come with blessings. My sweet baby, I don't know whether those magical powers are a blessing or a curse..."
He was originally talking to himself, but before he could finish his words, the baby who was sleeping soundly suddenly opened his eyes.
His eyes were dark and bright like glass immersed in water, staring straight at people.
No evasion or concealment.
Old Man Su was stunned for a moment, then laughed, "Little guy, are you pretending to be asleep?"
The child blinked.
"Oh, sweetie, you don't understand what good and bad are? Don't worry, Grandpa will explain it to you..."
The old man understood his granddaughter's meaning with just a blink of an eye. "There's a saying that goes, 'A common man is innocent, but he is guilty of possessing a treasure.' Just like us, Tianbao, you were originally an ordinary, innocent commoner, but because you were blessed with great supernatural powers, greedy villains wanted to snatch them away for themselves. To steal your things, they'll accuse you of many crimes and use all sorts of tricks until they achieve their goal... That's what the saying 'blessings and misfortunes come together' means... So, Tianbao, if you possess a treasure, you must be more cautious in what you say and do. Don't show off. Keep a low profile and don't stand out. Only then can you protect yourself."
The old man lowered his head and met his granddaughter's confused and confused eyes. Pity spread in his heart, "Grandpa doesn't know what our sweet baby went through in the past to make her so discouraged. But baby, all that is in the past. You are now Su Jiuni, the youngest of the Su family. No matter how poor our family is, you will always have something to eat. No matter how difficult or dangerous the situation is, your grandparents will always stand in front of you. Just grow up peacefully, but don't give away good things easily in the future... Your grandma is worried that you will lose your blessings, and she sighs and wipes away tears quietly at night."
The nagging words echoed in my ears.
Tianbao listened quietly, not quite understanding what was said.
Grandpa talked a lot, but she didn't feel repulsed because he looked at her with kind eyes when he spoke.
In her previous life, she had envied the fat boy next door who was about her age. His parents and grandparents would talk to him and play with him, and the way they looked at him was just like the way her grandfather looked at her now.
Tianbao stared at the old man, curled up his thin little hands, and his chest swelled for a moment.
What she once envied, she now seemed to have for a while.
Even though he couldn't empathize, Tianbao was able to sense every little thing that happened to him after he was born.
In this family, dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, uncle, aunt, and three brothers... they all seem to like her.
Tianbao's eyelids gradually drooped, and before falling asleep again, his mind was still replaying every moment when he was loved by his family after coming to this home.
Those likes were not after she showed her supernatural powers.
It was revealed naturally before she displayed her supernatural powers.
The feeling of being liked was so strange, she hadn't figured it out yet.
Otherwise, she will die slowly?
It is always better to be a clear-headed ghost than a confused ghost.
The sky outside the house gradually brightened, and the howling wind and snow suddenly stopped without anyone noticing.
People who had been hibernating in every household in the village immediately went out, wielding brooms, shovels and rakes to clear the snow.
The noise continued all morning.
The Su family courtyard was just as lively.
With no man on the scene, Old Lady Su brought her second daughter-in-law and three little boys, making a mess in the yard with lots of shouting and cursing.
In such noise, Tianbao still slept soundly, with even a corner of his mouth raised unconsciously.
