Chapter 41: Mutton Feast

Wen Xi took out her favorite kitchen knife.

Of course, it wasn't one of my modern knives; it was a new kitchen knife I'd bought at the market. It was just that Grandma Du's knife and I just didn't like it. Once it was in my hands, I wouldn't use it for any work.

Wen Xi cooked the intestines, tripe, and liver in a clay pot on the stove. Then she sliced the heart and lungs into thin slices and soaked them in the basin again.

When it was almost dark, Mao took Gu Shengmo to invite Fang Qiang and his sister. Grandma Du also came early to help with the cooking.

It has to be said that although the old man lived a life of poverty, he lived a life of poverty to the extreme.

The dry and deformed fingers were very flexible in making delicate and small corn steamed buns.

When Mao came back, she saw Fang Qiang hanging around in the back like a young woman visiting for the first time. Instead, his sister came over to the kitchen to help out.

His face is a little round, a bit like the New Year dolls in the old New Year pictures, especially when he smiles, he looks very funny.

At this time, Fang Ya stood in front of Wen Xi with a smile on her face and said:

"Wenxi, thank you for the candy you gave me. It's so sweet, even sweeter than I imagined!"

Imagine? What does that mean? After a slight pause, Wen Xi thought of a possibility: the child had never eaten candy.

The feeling of being powerless to change came over him again. Wen Xi rubbed his slightly sore nose and said:

"Don't call me Wenxi anymore. Call me sister. If you call me sister, I'll take you to eat delicious food and drink spicy drinks."

He was a little embarrassed by Fang Qiang's awkwardness, but when he saw Wen Xi starting to let loose again, he felt that she was about to lead the girl next to him astray, so he quickly came over and used a bone-softening palm:

"You're talking nonsense again! Don't lead Xiaoya astray."

Wen Xi quickly restrained herself and secretly stuck out her tongue at Xiaoya, causing the little girl to burst into laughter.

Fang Qiang, who was at the back, seemed to be much more relaxed as no one paid any special attention to him. Seeing that there was only about half a tank of water in the kitchen, he picked up his shoulder pole and left.

There were only two wells in the village, and they were not close to each other, so it was very difficult for the women to fetch water every time, and the water tank at home was almost never full.

When the steamed bread in the basket and the bones in the pot were almost done, they removed the heat and let them simmer for a few minutes. Wen Xi waved her hand, set the table, and started eating.

With so many people around, the atmosphere was naturally cheerful. Even the little guy Gu Shengmo kept shuttling between the kitchen and the room, saying that he wanted to help.

A large bowl of steamed bread, a large pot of stewed lamb bones, and a dish of dipping sauce prepared by Wen Xi. Although salt was added before serving, the lamb flavor was too strong and people might not be used to it, so she added a sauce to subdue the lamb flavor.

Then he brought over the cold shredded tripe that he had mixed in his spare time, along with a large bowl of pickled cabbage and shredded pork sauce.

The last dish was freshly stir-fried heart and lungs. Of course, Xiangye was in charge of the cooking. She had always refused to let Wenxi cook, so there was no choice but to wait for her to do so.

It’s a pity that there is no chili and cumin, which makes the whole cuisine lose its soul. Alas... a foodie’s regret can only be redeemed by a delicious meal!

There were a few people, too many to fit on the stools, so they split the table into two. The child and Xiangye sat at the kang table on the bed. Mao ate with Grandma Du and Fang Qiang at the dining table on the floor.

This actually reduced Fang Qiang's tension.

For those of us who were almost born and raised in northern Xinjiang, the ability to eat mutton seems to be innate. There is no need for dipping sauce at all, and the more you eat, the more delicious it becomes.

If Grandma Du wasn't old and worried about indigestion after eating too much, she would probably have fought with Fang Qiang.

At first, the Mao family members really couldn't get used to the taste. But, for someone who has black film all the way, how picky can his taste be?

I endured the first bite, then the second, and then another piece. I even became addicted to it.

This is the wonderful thing about lamb, the more you chew it, the more delicious it becomes.

People who are not used to it will not eat it again after taking one bite. But if you eat a few more bites, you will find its deliciousness.

Mutton becomes greasy when it gets cold, so Wen Xi suggested that everyone eat the bones first and then the rice.

With the success of the braised bones, everyone was looking forward to the following dishes. The chewy texture of the shredded tripe and the unique texture of the stir-fried heart and lungs were both very satisfying.

Xiangye especially likes the cold-boiled shredded tripe. She keeps eating with her head hanging down. Her cheeks are bulging like a little squirrel from chewing, which makes the little guys laugh.

Mao looked at the big bowl of pickled cabbage and shredded pork sauce and turned around to ask:

"What kind of dish is this? Is it for soup?"

Wen Xi quickly waved her hands:

"No, no, I stuffed it into the steamed bun and ate it."

I still remember that in modern times, when I went to a coarse grain store to eat, they prepared it this way, and it tasted much better than just eating steamed bread.

Stuff it in the steamed bun? Everyone looked at Wen Xi as if she were a monster.

Wen Xi was a bit bewildered. What was going on? Stuffing steamed bread into her mouth wasn't something out of the ordinary, was it?

Grandma Du was the first to do it. She took a bite and nodded continuously:

"Wenxi is really smart. She can actually come up with such a good idea. Eating it this way, the steamed bread is so much more delicious."

Mao took over the conversation:

"Just praise her! Every household has been eating steamed bread like that for years. But she loves to mess around."

All in all, everyone enjoyed the meal to their heart's content, and felt warm and cozy throughout the meal.

Wen Xi also took the opportunity to explain to them the benefits of eating mutton in winter, hoping that her mother would not cut off her mutton rations.
