Chapter 90: Fire Room

Since there were three women among the five people, it was not convenient for them to stay in the big tent with everyone else. This put Soldier Liu in a difficult position and he passed the problem to the fire room captain.

"Master Fat, look..."

The fat man, who already disliked the girls, was even more disgusted with them:

"There's no extra space. There's a temporary rest shack behind the fire room. Stay there if you want. I can't help you if you don't want to."

Soldier Liu looked at them with embarrassment. The shack was short, small, and leaky. Living in it on such a hot day, not to mention whether it would be warm or not, the mosquitoes would be enough to make a living.

"Okay, we'll live in the shack."

Ye Erniang agreed very readily.

"Then you guys clean up and come over this afternoon to chop those pickled vegetables."

The fat man walked away impatiently.

Soldier Liu smiled and said:

"Don't look at Mr. Fatty like that, he's actually a good person. He just hates trouble. As long as you work hard in the future, he will definitely accept you."

Soldier Liu gave some more instructions and left.

Several people came to the shack.

The shack is very small and it's a bit crowded for five people to sit inside.

Gu Shengmo pulled Wen Xi's sleeve.

Wen Xi looked over and asked:

"Mo'er, what's wrong?"

"Can I live with my sister?"

Wen Xi smiled and touched his head:

"Look at this shack. It's so small, how can we live here? And Mo'er is already a grown man, there's no reason for him to sleep with my sister. Aren't your tents right next to the fire room? Don't be afraid. Besides, don't we have Gu Shengjian?"

Gu Shengjian patted his chest in understanding and bumped into Gu Shengmo's shoulder:

"Don't worry! I'm your brother Jian! I'll protect you from now on."

Wen Xi took off her backpack and reminded everyone:

"Okay, it looks like we won't have lunch. Let's eat something and rest for a while. We should get back to work."

Everyone took out their own portion of pancakes and ate a simple lunch with the water bag. Then they closed their eyes and rested for a while in the shack.

Ye Erniang disliked the crowd, so she went outside the shack, leaned against it, hugged her big knife, and closed her eyes to rest.

It is the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the temperature drops a little in the morning and evening, but it is like a steamer at noon.

Even though the conditions in the barracks were good, with each person receiving a water bag full of water every day, many people were still fainting from heatstroke. This was especially true since most of these people were refugees who had been temporarily captured.

Wen Xi and the others were woken up by the noise, and saw people suffering from heatstroke being carried to the medical tent.

When we arrived at the fire room, everyone got busy.

Several people also took the initiative to go to the chopping board to cut sauerkraut.

The fat man saw that they were looking at him, so he didn't make any more trouble, and the disgust in his heart subsided a lot.

Although the food in the barracks was good, it was a famine after all, and compared to the outside world, it was just enough to avoid starvation. So there was nothing to prepare.

Three meals are provided a day, including dumpling soup and cornmeal steamed bread in the morning.

At noon, dumplings soup, cornmeal steamed bread,

In the evening, boiled water and multi-grain dumplings with sauerkraut.

This meal was a high-end meal for a famine year. As for why, it was probably similar to raising pigs! Pigs were fattened up and then killed, while they were kept healthy so they could go to the battlefield and kill one more person, or just hold on a little longer.

They stayed like this for a while, keeping a low profile. If Wen Xi hadn't been holding Gu Shengjian back, he would have probably done something terrible.

"Gu Wenxi, why do you keep stopping me? What did you say in the beginning? We're here to be soldiers, not cooks."

Wen Xi raised her eyelids and said calmly:

"If you don't obey my orders, you can go wherever you want."

Gu Shengjian instantly lost his temper and said awkwardly:

"Look at what you're saying. Am I the kind of person who would betray you? Besides, how would you live without me? I just feel that what I'm doing now is boring."

"Be patient. We're not on the battlefield right now. We're just stationed there. It doesn't matter what we do. We'll make plans once we get to the front lines."

Gu Shengjian smiled broadly, looking flattering:

"Hey, okay, sister, I'll listen to you."

Wen Xi didn't want to watch this behavior where she called him "sister" when she was happy and "daming" when she was unhappy.
