Chapter 15 Where did the governor go?

"Your Highness, I just noticed that there are very few guards at the city gates of Guangcheng, as well as many constables patrolling the streets."

Xie Yuan seemed oblivious to Helian Jue's gloomy expression, and turned to answer Helian Jue's question.

"Um?"

Helian Jue was stunned for a moment before remembering that he had just asked Xie if she had discovered anything amiss.

Mr. Xie has now given his answer.

"Are there relatively few guards at the city gates and patrol officers on the streets?"

Helian Jue suppressed his anger and began to think calmly.

Suddenly, his eyes lit up. "Something's happened in Guangcheng!"

That's why the governor's office was deserted.

This wasn't specifically targeted at Helian Jue; there were other reasons.

Xie Yuan quickly praised, "Your Highness is wise!"

"You don't need to flatter me; your intelligence is no less than mine!"

He was even smarter than Helian Jue.

Helian Jue was indeed arrogant and narcissistic, but he would not deny the merits of others.

Moreover, Xie Ayuan is indeed very observant and quick-witted.

"Your Highness flatters me. My discovery came from my youth when I traveled the world with my father. I saw a lot and naturally learned about it!"

Xie Yuan continued to flatter Helian Jue: "Your Highness, having lived in the deep palace for so long, although you are well-read and knowledgeable, you are still somewhat limited."

"If you had the opportunity to 'travel ten thousand miles' like me, I would be far inferior to you!"

His words were sincere and heartfelt.

Helian Jue stared at her for a moment without saying a word, but a hint of satisfaction appeared in his eyes.

However, Helian Jue was, after all, a former crown prince, and had heard far too many flattering words since childhood.

Xie Yuan's flattery wasn't particularly skillful, but it was genuine.

Helian Jue slightly curled the corners of his lips, then reverted to his usual aloof and arrogant demeanor. "You don't need to flatter me. I know I'm inferior to you in some ways!"

Xie Yuan hurriedly tried to explain.

Helian Jue waved his hand, "Alright, save those words for your little fatty."

Xie Yuan: ...What does the King of Yue mean by this? Does he mean that he is smarter than three-year-old Xie Zhen and won't be easily fooled by her?!

“Mr. Xie, you just said that you have traveled thousands of miles, so you must understand the customs, culture and strange things of the world better than I do, who have read thousands of books.”

Helian Jue leaned lazily against the car window and said casually, "Then can you guess what happened in Guangcheng?"

"Does Your Highness want to hear the truth or a lie?" Xie Yuan asked deliberately.

Helian Jue gave her a cold look, but didn't bother to scold her.

have to!

Understood.

Xie Yuan quickly put on a smiling face and said, "Since that's the case, I'll tell you the truth."

"If it weren't for that flying fish from outer space outside the city, I wouldn't have thought of it—"

Helian Jue's face darkened when Xie Yuan mentioned the stupid fish that had startled him.

He interrupted impatiently, "I know, it's a hurricane!"

Helian Jue had this idea when he stabbed the fish with his sword.

He served as the crown prince for over a decade, and after turning eighteen, he began to participate in government affairs at the front of the court.

When the sage is ill or on a tour, he still has to oversee the country and govern.

The governors of the southeastern coastal areas would report the disasters caused by hurricanes in their respective territories every year.

Helian Jue had never seen a hurricane, but the memorials of coastal officials would mention that hurricanes were extremely powerful, uprooting trees, blowing sand, destroying walls and houses, collapsing seawalls, and harming people and crops.

It can uproot even large trees, destroy houses and dams, and easily send fish flying by.

Wait, a memorial to the throne?!

A sudden thought flashed through Helian Jue's mind, and he remembered a detail mentioned in those memorials.

The governors of Guangcheng, Yuezhou, Luozhou and other places in Lingnan would go to the neighboring inland cities to "escape the summer heat" every year during the hurricane season.

They said they were going to escape the summer heat, but they were really just trying to avoid the typhoon.

...That's why the government office in Guangcheng was completely empty.

The number of guards at the city gates and the number of constables patrolling the streets has also been greatly reduced.

They've all followed the governor to the neighboring city for refuge.

"I see!"

Helian Jue nodded and did not urge Xie Yuan to answer the question again.

He already knows the answer.

Seeing this, Xie Yuan did not press his advantage, but instead vaguely brushed the topic aside.

Tap tap tap!

The crisp sound of horses' hooves grew closer.

Mu Shao, the General of the Thousand Bull Guard, rode his horse, soaking wet, to the carriage of Helian Jue and Xie Yuan.

He shouted "Whoa!" and the horse stopped.

Mu Shao dismounted and stood before the oxcart, respectfully clasping his hands in a salute: "Your subject Mu Shao reports to the King of Yue, the Prefect of Guangcheng—"

Before Mu Shao could finish speaking, Helian Jue sneered and said coolly, "General Mu rushed as fast as he could and entered the city first, only to find it empty!"

Mu Shao lowered his head, but his pupils suddenly contracted—

What's going on?

The King of Yue had just entered the city and hadn't even reached the governor's office when he learned that the governor was not there.

Mu Shao was not naive enough to believe that the King of Yue "knew before he attacked," and many guesses flashed through his mind.

Alternatively, the King of Yue might have had spies among the Thousand Bull Guards led by Mu Shao;

Alternatively, the King of Yue might have made advance arrangements by secretly sending people to Guangcheng ahead of time.

Alternatively, even while in exile, the King of Yue could still learn about the court's movements.

After all, a high-ranking official like the Prefect of Guangcheng had to report to the imperial court if he left the prefecture he was in charge of.

The King of Yue was the former crown prince, and he had been ruling for several years. There must have been many of his cronies in the court.
