Chapter 3 Dandelion Leaves
As the clay pots on the fire boiled, an aroma wafted into the air.
Sang Yu sniffed deeply and smelled a pot of noodles and dried meat. His already hungry stomach growled twice.
Hearing the rumbling of her stomach, Sang Xingjia, looking tired, forced a smile: "I guessed that you must not have eaten enough yesterday, little sister. Come and eat."
As he spoke, he fiddled with his elbow and pulled out half a moldy coarse flour cake from his chest. No one knew how he put it in there.
"Brother, what are you...?" Sang Yu was about to ask where it came from, but suddenly realized that it must be what Sang Xingjia saved yesterday.
Even if these officers took their money, they would still deduct it from them severely, giving each person only one coarse flour bread a day.
The coarse flour cake was only the size of Sang Yu's palm and was moldy. The rough grains inside made it hard to swallow and hurt his throat.
But nowadays, it has become a supreme delicacy. People need to eat to have strength, and only with strength can they survive.
Knowing that this half of the bread was the rations that Sang Xingjia had saved for himself, even though Sang Yu felt a burning sensation in his stomach, he still shook his head and refused: "I'm not hungry, big brother, you eat it."
She knew that it was because she hadn't eaten for too long and the stomach acid was burning her stomach lining.
But it doesn't matter. She can still hold on a little longer and get new bread when she rests at night.
Sang Xingjia was about to say something when he suddenly heard a moan.
"Hmm~, big brother, I'm so hungry."
He looked down and immediately showed joy. Sang Xinghao, who had been sleeping on his knees, had woken up at some point and was crying and saying he was hungry.
Knowing that it is difficult for a sick person to have an appetite, Sang Xingjia divided the pancake into two, giving one half to Sang Xinghao and the other half to Sang Yu.
"Eat, all of you. Only when you are full will you have the strength to walk."
Seeing that he had made up his mind, Sang Yu knew that he would be reluctant to eat it if she didn't eat it, so she didn't refuse anymore. She took it silently and started to eat it in small bites.
Sang Xinghao had been having a high fever for several days and had no appetite for meals.
The saved bread was snatched away by the eldest wife, who called it "honoring grandmother", but in fact it all went into their own people's mouths.
After Sang Yu's bloodletting therapy in the morning, he felt more energetic and had an appetite for food.
Sang Yongjing and Xie Qiujin, who were standing by, couldn't help but feel their eyes well up when they saw this scene.
The three children are polite and humble, and they are friendly and respectful to each other. No matter how many people beg for them, they have been dragged to this point.
Alas, brother is confused!
Sang Xinghao had a really good appetite. He finished a quarter of the pancake in just a few bites. He even licked the crumbs on his hands into his mouth.
After finishing the meal, he still felt a little unsatisfied and not full.
However, he also knew that things were different now and it was not easy to get a bite to eat, so he did not act out of temper.
Sang Yu ate very slowly. Seeing that he was licking his lips reluctantly after licking all the crumbs, she guessed that he was not full and handed him the piece of bread in her hand that had only been touched a little.
"You eat, little brother."
"Ah? I'm full, sister, you eat." Sang Xinghao quickly refused, and in order to prove that he was not lying, he deliberately stuck out his belly and patted it.
Sang Yu stuffed the cake into his hand without saying anything: "Sister is full, you can eat it."
Is she hungry? Yes, very hungry. Very hungry!
But she knew that the child needed more food to obtain energy. The high fever had subsided temporarily, but it was inevitable that the fever would recur at night. The body needed energy to defeat the bacteria.
The child didn't know what was true or false. After hearing her say that she was full, Sang Xinghao stopped refusing and started eating the noodles in big mouthfuls.
However, Sang Xingjia looked hesitant, as if he wanted to snatch the pancake back.
He broke the pancake open, so how could he not know how big it was? Judging from its shape, Sang Yu only took a small bite at most, so there was no way he could be full.
In the end, he didn't do it, mainly because Sang Xinghao ate too fast. He stuffed the whole bread into his mouth in just a few bites, like a starving ghost reincarnated.
Sang Yu looked away and observed his surroundings to divert his attention.
Although it is early autumn now, most of the plants in the canyon are still green, with only a few cold-sensitive plants beginning to turn yellow.
Sang Yu casually glanced ahead and his gaze suddenly stopped.
That's... a dandelion!
She felt her eyes brighten. She had been worried about infection and inflammation before, but now she no longer had to worry.
"Brother, I'll be back soon." After saying hello to Sang Xingjia, Sang Yu stood up and walked towards that place.
Sang Xingjia thought she wanted to go to the bathroom, so he nodded and agreed without asking any more questions.
The dandelion patch was not far away, about ten steps away. Sang Yu walked closer and squatted down.
The dandelion in front of me has several slightly yellowed thin stems extending from the core. The furry seeds at the tips of the stems have long been blown away by the wind, but a circle of tender green new leaves has grown on the outside.
She picked all the tender leaves around the dandelion, looked around for some more, and returned to Sang Xingjia with a full load.
Seeing her hands full of weeds, Xie Qiujin frowned slightly: "Yu'er, what are you doing?"
Although everyone was hungry, they did not resort to eating weeds.
Sang Yu didn't care about all this. She divided the dandelion leaves she picked into five portions, gave each person a small handful, and then started to chew on her own handful.
She ate very quickly, not caring about the mud and sand on the leaves, and stuffed them all into her mouth as if they were some delicacies from the mountains and the sea.
"Little sister, what are you doing...?"
"Yu'er!"
The people around her suddenly exclaimed and looked at her with worry in their eyes.
Sang Xingjia even stood up and tried to stop her.
"don’t worry."
The dandelion leaves did not taste good. The bitter taste made her frown.
Sang Yu swallowed it with her neck stiffened before speaking: "This is a herb and also food. You can eat it if it's edible."
Can I eat it?
A few people looked at the grass leaves in their hands and then looked down at the weeds beside them. No matter how they looked at it, they felt that they were no different from weeds.
Could it be that my younger sister/Yuer is going crazy from starvation? This thought crossed everyone's mind at the same time.
Just by looking at the expressions on their faces, Sang Yu knew that they didn't believe what he said.
The bitter taste continued to spread in her mouth, as if even her throat was filled with bitterness, but she didn't care much. She rolled her eyes and came up with an idea.
"I'm afraid you don't know, Dad and Mom, but I've seen this before while browsing through some books. It's called dandelion, and it looks like a weed, but it has the effect of filling the stomach and reducing fever."
Along the way, it was not just Sang Yu and Sang Xinghao who had fever. The most common symptom after wounds became infected was fever.
Even the seemingly normal Sang couple had a low fever.
When Sang Yongjing heard her say that the grass leaves in her hand that looked like wild grass had the effect of reducing fever, he had an idea.
He knew that his little girl liked to read miscellaneous books, and he even turned a blind eye to Sang Xingjia secretly giving her banned books. He didn't expect to gain such a reward.
"Then let's give it a try first."
Once Sang Yongjing spoke, Xie Qiujin, who always obeyed her husband's orders, naturally would not object.
A family of four sat together, each holding a handful of green leaves that looked like weeds in their hands, and slowly nibbled on them.
Oddly enough, as soon as the dandelion leaves entered their stomachs, they felt their bodies became lighter, and the fatigue that had been weighing on their hearts seemed to have eased a lot.
