Chapter 3 County Division

Falling poison is a slow-acting poison that, upon ingestion, causes loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.

When the bailiffs knocked the bundle off the Ruan family's belongings, Ruan Meng saw Luo Hui among the scattered medicinal herbs.

Originally wrapped separately in medicine paper, it was knocked down and ended up mixed up with other medicinal herbs.

Ruan Meng crouched down, carefully sorting through the items, and noticed the approaching footsteps of the constables...

Ruan Meng pinched the fallen package in her palm, crushed it, and then carefully smeared the mixture around the bottom of the package with her palm.

As the constable approached, Ruan Meng saw him raise his leg, about to stomp on the medicinal herbs again. She quickly stood up, held the bundle in front of her, and lowered her head to cover her face with the bundle.

"Little sister!"

Ruan Qian called out, gesturing for Ruan Meng to step back.

Ruan Yi and Ruan Zheng have already come up.

The man in front of him, furious, punched the bundle to the ground and demanded an explanation to the Ruan family and the Song and Fan families who had surrounded them:

"What? You want to rebel?"

The three families glared angrily, but Ruan Meng, upon seeing the other party habitually wiping the corner of her lips with the pad of her thumb, curled her lips into a smile.

She had noticed earlier that this person liked to wipe his lips with his fingers.

very good.

The collected medicinal herbs were scattered all over the ground again.

Ruan Yi was about to pick it up when Ruan Meng reminded him that the herbs were originally packaged separately, but now they were mixed together and probably couldn't be used. Ruan Yi and Ruan Zheng were very distressed, but because they cared about their elder brother's health, they didn't insist.

Ruan Meng picked out the intact medicine bottles. She was actually worried that if her second brother accidentally touched the powder on the bundle and ingested it, the consequences would be unimaginable.

With the Ruan family's experience as a precedent, the other exiles were much more willing to pay.

When the results of the county division were announced, and the yamen runners from the four counties arrived, the prefectural yamen runner glared at the Ruan, Song, and Fan families again, spat, and left.

Ruan Meng smiled smugly, "If you're still jumping around tonight, I'll write the name Ruan backwards!"

Each of the four counties sent two yamen runners, and the number of people assigned to each county was roughly equal. Among them, about sixty people were assigned to Nan County.

Sixty people only need two yamen runners to lead them?

It wasn't that the county government was being careless; it was simply that the island was isolated at sea, and the criminals couldn't escape.

Even if one jumps into the sea and manages to swim to the other side, without a household registration, one will find it difficult to move an inch.

Moreover, judging from the storm that just swept the original owner into the sea and caused him to drown, it is clear that even if someone enters the sea, the chances of them swimming to the other side alive are slim.

The yamen runners of Nanxian County were taller and thinner than those of the other three counties, but their clear eyes and sincere smiles made them instantly likable.

"You've all had a long journey! Now, let's go back together!"

The two constables introduced themselves, "My name is Feng Da, and his name is Feng Si. The magistrate originally intended to come and fetch us personally, but he had a dispute to deal with and couldn't get away, so he had to send us first."

“Let’s go back to the county first. There are four villages in Nanxian County: Zhengjia Village, Yuanjia Village, Fengjia Village and Wanjia Village.”

"Based on geographical location, Zhengjia Village is closer to the mine and Xixian County, and is more lively, while Yuanjia Village is next."

“Fengjia Village is located in the center of Nanxian County and is most affected by typhoons. Wanjia Village has many islands and reefs and is closest to Xixian County.”

“If the adults were here, they would have distributed the spoils fairly. But since they aren’t here, we’ll have the four village chiefs discuss how to distribute them. What do you all think?”

Seeing that the constables spoke politely, the convicts naturally dared not have any objections.

As for the county magistrate he mentioned, he originally intended to personally greet him...

Nobody took it seriously.

Feng Da continued to remind them, "If we set off now, it will take about three hours to walk back to Nanxian. There are mountain springs and wells along the way, so we can rest if we get thirsty."

The convicts expressed their gratitude and thanks, and Feng Da said again:

"On the way, everyone be careful, look up and down. The climate in the South Island is humid, the trees are lush, and there have been cases of fruit falling and killing people..."

The convicts were startled.

"There are also many insects and snakes along the way. Back in the village, be careful in the mountains; wild boars and deer can attack people. When you reach the seaside, don't touch any unfamiliar reptiles; many seafood items are poisonous, and there are snakes in the sea..."

Before Feng Da could finish speaking, the prisoners' faces turned pale.

Someone in the group cried out in surprise, having been bitten suddenly. They slapped their hand hard, squeezing out a handful of blood.

Mosquitoes are really vicious!

The mosquito bites left tiny bumps the size of my fingernail, and they're so itchy!

"ah!"

Ruan Yi's exclamation, though late, arrived.
