Chapter Twenty-Three: Not Enough to Sell, Not Enough at All

Chen Fang took it, scooped out a bowlful with the ceramic bowl, poured it onto the banana leaf, and packed it up for him, imitating Pei Yao's previous packaging style.

Seeing that someone had already bought one, the others realized what was happening and started asking Chen Fang to pack one for them too.

"Give me five bowls, I'll take them back for my husband to eat."

"Give me two bowls."

"I want three bowls too. This is the first time I've ever had such delicious snails. I'll make sure my wife tries them when I get home."

Because there were so many people, Niu Qingshan's seafood quickly sold out, so he packed up his things and hurried over to help Chen Fang pack them up.

Pei Yao had finished roasting the kudzu worms, but she couldn't spare a hand to help Chen Fang.

But she kept talking: "Everyone, please don't push. Come one at a time. We brought three big buckets today, so everyone can buy some."

Upon hearing that they had only brought three buckets, the people in the crowd felt as if the sky had fallen. Three buckets were hardly enough to sell, and if they didn't hurry, they probably wouldn't be able to get any.

The crowd erupted in another uproar: "I'll have another bowl!"

"I want a bowl too."

Pei Yao: "..."

It feels like I meant well but did something wrong.

Just then, Pei Yao finished roasting the kudzu root worms, and the aroma of the roasted kudzu root worms filled the air.

It was almost noon, and everyone was getting hungry. Chen Fang's spicy and tangy snails had just whetted their appetites.

At this moment, everyone was staring hungryly at the skewers in Pei Yao's hand.

Pei Yao felt uneasy under these gazes, especially from the handsome young man closest to her, who had been standing there ever since she tore apart the kudzu worm.

He was there when they went to try the spicy snails, and he's still there now when they're scrambling for them.

His gaze remained fixed on the string of kudzu worms in Pei Yao's hand.

Pei Yao: "..."

It seems she's been waiting for this roasted kudzu root worm for a long time; she's truly a person who sticks to one thing.

She held up a kudzu root worm and waved it in front of him, and the boy's gaze followed Pei Yao's skewers.

Pei Yao: "Young man, these are called chicken wing worms, two coins a string, want some?"

Pei Yao came up with the name on the spot; calling it "chicken wings" sounded more expensive than just casually calling it "insects," which sounded more pricey.

The boy nodded without hesitation: "Five skewers, please."

Unlike snails, which can be found in abundance on the beach, kudzu worms can only be found by searching inside kudzu vines, and not every kudzu vine contains them.

Moreover, Meilin Town is located by the sea, so it has no shortage of seafood. The price of snails is cheaper, while that of kudzu worms is more expensive.

Two coins can buy a large bowl of snails, but only three kudzu worms can be bought.

Pei Yao happily handed the boy two skewers.

Then they happily waited for the boy to give them the money.

Lin Shaoqing happily accepted it, took a bite, and immediately felt a burst of delicious, crispy flavor in his mouth.

As expected, it didn't disappoint him; this stuff tastes even better than bee pupae!

He quickly finished the two skewers in his hand and continued to look at Pei Yao longingly: "Grill the rest, I want them all."

Pei Yao's lips twitched. "That's fine, but you haven't paid for those five skewers yet..."

Pei Yao was most afraid of asking for money, especially from handsome men, and for a moment she found it difficult to bring herself to do it.

However, judging from his clothes, which are made of satin and silk, unlike my own patched linen dress.

This guy looks like a rich kid; he probably doesn't lack money...

Pei Yao was struggling with how to ask him to pay the bill first, but her hands didn't stop moving.

Everyone else was busy buying snails and hadn't even had a chance to look at the grilled chicken wing worms when they heard the boy buy all the worms. They immediately felt uncomfortable.

Some people exclaimed, "How many chicken wing worms would we have to eat to finish them all?"

"You didn't smell it just now? I was completely overwhelmed by the aroma. I was thinking of going over to try it after I bought the snails."

"There's so much, you can't finish it all, can you? Why don't you share some with me?"

Lin Shaoqing glanced at him, shook his head, and explained, "There are many people in my family, we can finish it all."

Some people even recognized Lin Shaoqing immediately, exclaiming, "Isn't this the young master of the Lin family? I heard he's the most discerning eater; if he says something is delicious, it's sure to be delicious!"

Immediately, someone asked Lin Shaoqing, "Young Master Lin, are those chicken wing worms delicious?"

Lin Shaoqing nodded and truthfully replied, "These chicken wing worms are crispy and delicious."

The crowd erupted in protest: "I should have bought a few skewers earlier!"

"I smelled it just now, something that smells so good must be delicious."

"Ah, it's a pity that Young Master Lin booked them all."

It's a pity that only the men didn't get to eat the chicken wing worms.

Women are generally afraid of insects and are not interested in those chicken wing worms.

No matter how fragrant it is, they are not interested!

A big, fat worm took a chicken wing and actually thought it was a chicken wing. No matter how much it yells, it can't change the fact that it's a big, fat worm.

After finishing the last skewer of grilled meat in his hand, Lin Shaoqing looked down and seemed to understand something from the girl with the wrinkled little bun face.

He quickly took out a tael of silver from his purse and handed it to Pei Yao: "Miss, this should be enough, right?"

Pei Yao's eyes lit up when she saw the small amount of silver in front of her.

She had asked beforehand, and one tael of silver was equal to 1000 coins!

At most, the kudzu vines in her basket would yield a little over a hundred insects, three in a string, two coins per string, and at most a little over a hundred coins.

The man gave him a tael of silver and asked if it was enough.

He shouldn't be asking if it's enough; he should be worrying about whether this poor girl can even find the money...

Pei Yao didn't dare to actually keep the tael of silver, so she put it away and said to him, "Young man, you have too much silver. I don't have change right now. Let me grill it for you first. After it's done, I'll count how many coins it is and then give you the change."

Lin Shaoqing didn't care about the money anyway. Hearing what he said, he nodded casually and then looked at Pei Yao's roasted chicken wing insects very seriously.

Pei Yao, after being stared at for so long, felt herself sweating profusely. "Big brother, what are you doing..."

"Why don't you give it a try..."

Pei Yao looked up at his burning gaze and tentatively asked, but his eyes lit up: "Really?"

Pei Yao's lips twitched involuntarily again, then she silently made room for him: "Okay..."

Lin Shaoqing had just become very interested in this oven that could roast insects; he had never seen one before.

He enjoys eating all kinds of delicious food and is also quite interested in the tools used for making food, so he was very happy to be able to play with this thing.

However, after he grilled for a while, Pei Yao complained that he was too slow and took over to continue grilling herself.

Chen Fang's three buckets of snails were quickly emptied, but many people who hadn't bought any were still lingering around, unwilling to disperse.

Pei Yao also hurriedly finished grilling 50 skewers. There were two left over, not enough for one skewer, so she gave them to Lin Shaoqing.

Pei Yao packed the roasted chicken wing insects into banana leaves.

After doing a quick mental calculation, Pei Yao realized that fifty strings of chicken wing insects would cost a total of one hundred coins, and she still needed to find nine hundred coins for Lin Shaoqing.

She handed the tael of silver to Chen Fang and explained the situation. Chen Fang counted the copper coins in her hand and realized that she didn't have enough to give Lin Shaoqing change.

However, she did have a solution. She borrowed a steelyard (an ancient tool for accurately weighing silver) and scissors from the owner of the stall next door, cut out a small piece of silver, weighed it, and returned the two pieces of silver of different sizes to Pei Yao.

“Yao girl, the smaller piece is our 100 coins.”

Pei Yao returned the larger piece to Lin Shaoqing. Lin Shaoqing usually gave her more than she was entitled to, but this was the first time he had encountered such a insistent insistence on giving her the larger piece.

He reached out and took it, and as he left, he asked Pei Yao if she would come again tomorrow. His question undoubtedly touched everyone's hearts. Some of those who hadn't bought the spicy snails and roasted chicken wing insects asked, somewhat unwillingly, "Yeah, are you coming again tomorrow?"
