Chapter 6: Lots of Seafood in the Rocky Reefs

"I'll come with you. People from this rocky village are afraid of slipping when they come here."

Niu Qingshan smiled憨厚ly.

Pei Yao didn't refuse. Indeed, the reef was a bit dangerous, and it would be best to have a local look after them.

The resources in the reef area were indeed much more abundant than outside. After taking only two steps, Pei Yao spotted a large empty oyster shell.

In her experience, it's easy for a certain type of fish to hide inside.

She stepped on one foot and used her other hand to pry it open, and sure enough, there was a fish inside with a big head and a small body.

"Bighead carp, this thing is very tender when steamed," Niu Qingshan explained, afraid that Pei Yao wouldn't recognize it.

Pei Yao looked at the fish with bright eyes, and her mood improved. This was high-quality meat!

Pei Yao had sharp eyes and soon spotted another plump stone crab hiding inside the rock.

Unfortunately, he didn't have fire tongs and didn't dare to grab it easily for fear of getting pinched. What a waste of such a fat crab.

If you steam this, it will be incredibly fragrant.

Pei Yao picked up a few more plump goby fish.

She didn't know if she was lucky or if the seafood resources here were too abundant, but after walking for a short while, she picked up a soft-shelled blue crab that had just molted.

Because this crab had just molted, its entire body was soft and hadn't hardened yet, so it wasn't afraid of being pinched, which was perfect for Pei Yao.

She discovered that there were lots and lots of crabs in the pile of rocks, making Pei Yao wish she could conjure up a pair of fire tongs immediately.

Niu Qingshan saw that he had picked up a crab and kindly reminded him, "Sister Yao, women shouldn't eat this crab, it will make it difficult for them to get pregnant."

After Niu Qingshan finished speaking, his face turned a dark red, whether from the sun or the heat, and even the base of his ears turned a large red.

Niu Qingshan heard it from the villagers: there used to be a pregnant woman in their village who miscarried because she loved eating crabs.

There were many similar cases in the neighborhood, so gradually the women in the area stopped daring to eat crabs.

People of their generation didn't understand that crabs are cold in nature; they only knew that pregnant women who ate too many crabs were more likely to get pregnant.

But Pei Yao, being a modern person, knew this.

Women and pregnant women should not eat too many crabs because pregnant women's digestive systems are relatively weak, and eating cold foods can easily irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

In addition, cold foods may have adverse effects on the uterus, and in severe cases, may lead to miscarriage.

Normal girls will have no problems as long as they don't consume large quantities.

However, she didn't intend to explain so much to Niu Qingshan, since her current identity was that of a woman from the capital, and she shouldn't know so much.

"I won't eat it, give it to my cousin." Pei Yao curled the corners of her lips.

......

"Achoo~"

On the beach not far away, Pei Yichen squatted down and sneezed loudly. He raised his hand to touch his nose, wondering who was cursing him.

"Cousin, Xuan'er found another one!" Little Xuan'er proudly held up the clam she had just dug up and showed it to Pei Yichen.

Pei Yichen rubbed the little girl's head: "Xiao Xuan'er is so great!"

Pei Yao quickly filled half a large basket with clams from the pile of rocks, and then went to the beach to pick up a lot of large and plump clams and scallops.

The tide should be rising soon, and Yunniang and the others' bamboo baskets are full of various shellfish.

Pei Yichen naturally took the bamboo basket from his cousin and carried it on his own back; the basket was full.

My cousin is amazing; she picked up more than all of them combined.

...

On her way back, Pei Yao passed a hillside and saw a large patch of wild garlic. This stuff is really good; she can use it to make a dipping sauce to eat with later.

Thinking this to herself, she ran over and quickly pulled up a few weeds. Chen Fang was a little confused: "Yao girl, why are you pulling up these weeds?"

"Auntie, this isn't a wild vegetable, it's called wild garlic. We can use it to eat with today's seafood later."

"Is that so? Yao girl really knows a lot." Chen Fang said this to Yunniang, her eyes filled with envy.

She looked at her son, who usually only knew how to study, now playing and frolicking with Xuan'er while carrying a basket on his back, and sighed.

Daughters are still the best.

Speaking of wild garlic as a dipping sauce.

Pei Yao suddenly remembered, how could she have garlic without chili peppers?

These seafood dishes would be delicious if they were eaten with some chili peppers.

She's someone who can't live without spicy food.

I just don't know if chili peppers still exist in this era.

Looking up at Niu Qingshan not far away, Pei Yao skipped over with the wild garlic in her hand and asked, "Brother Qingshan, are there any wild chili peppers around here?"

"What is a chili pepper?" Niu Qingshan had never heard of it.

Pei Yao thought for a moment and explained, "It's spicy, and it comes in green and red varieties, and it's long and thin."

He was gesturing with his hands as he spoke.

Niu Qingshan thought for a moment, then suddenly realized, "Sister Yao is talking about the citrus, right? There's a big patch of them on the hillside to the north. But they're very spicy and can easily cause internal heat, especially if you eat two on an empty stomach. Your stomach and tongue will hurt for half a day. You shouldn't eat them."

Nobody in the village eats this.

Niu Qingshan recalled that when he was a child, he accidentally ate two of them when he went to the mountain to collect firewood.

The taste was so spicy that it made him feel like his heart and liver were being torn apart; his chest and stomach were burning. He never dared to eat it again.

Upon hearing this, Pei Yao was overjoyed. She hadn't expected it to actually exist. Her big, bright eyes looked at Niu Qingshan, making the young man a little embarrassed. He scratched his head in a fluster.

"Brother Qingshan, could you take me to pick some?"

What do you need that for?

"eat!"

Niu Qingshan didn't understand but didn't say much. He just thought to himself, "This girl from Kyoto is really something else."

Thinking this, she glanced down at the bamboo basket Pei Yichen was carrying.

Pei Yao picked those up; they were all sorts of miscellaneous seafood, many of which were not eaten in the village.

He said he didn't understand.

The hillside to the north was not far from Pei Yao's house. Pei Yao told Yun Niang to put the shellfish in warm water to remove the sand, and to wash the wild garlic as well, and to prepare it when she returned.

She's going out for a bit, she'll be back soon.

Chen Fang was worried, so she asked Pei Yichen to come with her.

Niu Qingshan led them up the north-facing hillside along a small path. Just as he had said, the entire hillside was covered in chili peppers, a vibrant red. Pei Yao's eyes lit up, and she quickly began picking them.

Although Pei Yichen didn't know why his cousin wanted to pick this thing, he still helped her pick it.

When he lived in Kyoto, his family always had a cook, so he had never seen chili peppers before; he had only eaten them occasionally at the dinner table.

The three of them quickly picked a large bag of chili peppers. Pei Yao asked Pei Yichen to take off his coat to put the peppers in. Pei Yichen struggled silently for a moment, then obediently did as he was told.

When they got home, Yunniang and Chenfang were cleaning up the ground they hadn't finished cleaning the day before. In the corner of the yard, there was a stone hoe, and Chenfang was studying how to use it to hoe the ground.

Pei Yao put the chili peppers in the kitchen and then picked two lemons from the huge lemon tree in the yard.

All the weeds in the yard have been cleared away, leaving only this huge lemon tree.

When Chen Fang was cleaning the yard, she saw that it was full of yellow fruit.

It looked so appealing with its golden color that I thought it was edible, so I picked it and took a bite.

She almost screamed from jealousy.

It looks so beautiful, but I never expected it to be so bittersweet.

She picked up a knife and was about to chop when Pei Yao saw her and quickly stopped her.

Pei Yao repeatedly warned him not to cut it.
