Chapter 3 The Lark

Nowadays, the Central Plains are rich in spiritual energy, and many plants and animals have cultivated into demons. However, most of these demons are of low intelligence and act solely based on their likes and dislikes, frequently causing harm to people.

Therefore, many Buddhist sects located on famous mountains and rivers have disciples who travel in the human world, taking it upon themselves to eliminate demons and save all living beings. The demons, in turn, have no choice but to hide and cultivate diligently.

The Taoist school has gradually disappeared, while the Buddhist school is dominated by three major temples: Jinyuan Temple on Cangyuan Mountain, Pudu Nunnery on Dimai Mountain, and Bodhi Temple on Jingtu Mountain.

Whether one is a Buddhist or a Taoist, cultivation is divided into four stages, each of which is further divided into three levels: early, middle, and late. Each level is several times more powerful than the previous one, but the difficulty also increases several times over with each step forward.

The four stages of Buddhist cultivation are Foundation Building, Relic Formation, Buddha-Mind, and Nirvana. After Nirvana, the soul leaves the mortal body and is reborn as a golden body. If this process is successful, one can instantly become a Buddha and achieve enlightenment. Taoist cultivation is also divided into four stages: Qi Refining, Golden Core, Nascent Soul, and Void Transformation. The highest level of Void Transformation involves undergoing tribulation, and upon success, one ascends to become an immortal.

Yuanzhou is located on the border of the Central Plains. In the southwest of the prefecture lies a dense forest that stretches for thousands of miles. Hunters often venture into the outer perimeter, but no one dares to venture deep into the forest, so no one knows that beyond the dense forest lies a range of mountains. Between the mountains and the forest lies a plain covered with green grass and dotted with low hills.

Looking around, white foxes can be seen everywhere on this plain; a rough count would probably reveal that there are at least a thousand of them.

Some of the white foxes were small, with only one fluffy tail behind them; some looked bigger, with three tails; and a very few had six tails.

These white foxes are descended from the nine-tailed fox lineage passed down from ancient times.

A nine-tailed fox is born no different from an ordinary white fox, except that its spiritual energy is exceptionally abundant. After a hundred years, it can transform into human form, cultivate autonomously, and absorb spiritual energy into its body, at which point it is almost indistinguishable from a Qi Refining cultivator in the human world. After another three hundred years, three tails grow on its back, at which point it is equivalent to a Golden Core cultivator in the human world. After another three hundred years, six tails grow on its back, at which point it is the same as a Nascent Soul cultivator in the human world. After another three hundred years, exactly one thousand years later, nine tails grow on its back, at which point it has the same cultivation level as a Void Transformation cultivator in the human world. Every time the fox clan differentiates its tails, a heavenly tribulation descends, each one more difficult to overcome than the last. Therefore, even today, six-tailed foxes are extremely rare, let alone nine-tailed foxes.

In the dense forest, the lush branches and leaves rustled softly in the wind. Amidst the rustling, a clear female voice hummed a folk song, its melodious voice carrying far through the forest.

In the woods, a beautiful woman sat on a tall tree trunk. She had fox-like eyes that held an indescribable allure as they opened and closed. Beneath her delicate, upturned nose, her cherry-red lips, though untouched by lipstick, held a faint smile.

She wore a light white shirt, revealing a section of her jade-like arms and calves, her two fair legs dangling from the tree trunk, swaying gently.

Suddenly, footsteps sounded in the distance. The woman stopped singing, Jing Liangliang's eyes darted around, and the smile on her lips turned mischievous. With a flash of white light, she disappeared.

Not long after, two men in black, looking around furtively, approached. The man in front was carrying a swaddled baby in his arms.

Upon reaching this point, the man in black behind tugged at the clothes of the man in black in front and whispered, "Brother, let's not go any further. Let's just throw him here."

The man in black holding the swaddled baby paused for a moment, nodded, and replied in a deep voice, "Okay." He bent down and placed the swaddled baby on the ground. Inside the swaddled baby was a child haphazardly wrapped, with the child's big eyes wide open, looking around. The child's black eyes were clear and clean, like a lake.

"Let's go." A hint of pity appeared in the eyes of the man in black, and he and another man in black turned and walked away silently.

Suddenly, a white light flashed by, and a woman in white appeared out of thin air in front of them.

The two were startled and cried out in surprise, "Ah!"

The woman in white chuckled wickedly, looking at the two men in black with their pale faces, and said in a crisp voice, "Why did you throw that child here?"

The first man in black, his hand hidden in his sleeve, trembled slightly. He forced himself to remain calm and asked, "You... are you a human or a ghost?"

"Me..." The woman's mischievous side emerged. She made a face, stuck out her tongue, and said in a low voice, "I'm a ghost... I've come to take your lives..."

"Ah!" Another extremely pitiful scream rang out. The man in black behind him turned pale with fright and stumbled away, bypassing the woman.

The remaining man in black looked even more displeased and, too, slipped away, bypassing the woman and running.

The woman made no attempt to stop them. Turning around, she watched the two men in black flee in panic, and then she laughed mischievously, her laughter ringing out clearly.

Soon, the two men in black ran far away and disappeared from sight. Only then did the woman turn her gaze away and see that there were now two wolves around the infant, circling him with a look of utter lust.

The woman turned around and saw that the two wolves shrank back, looking at her with some fear.

The woman smiled wickedly and walked over step by step. As she approached, the two wolves retreated, glancing at the infant in swaddling clothes from time to time, as if they were particularly drooling over the tender taste. However, their fear of the woman far outweighed their desire for food.

Suddenly, the woman jumped forward, swung her hands forward like claws, and screamed "Ah!"

Upon seeing this, the two wolves shrank back even further, turned around and ran away, disappearing from sight in no time.
