On a small island in the East China Sea, in the swamp, he repeatedly hurt her with his words, just so that he could live up to the Dharma and the Buddha, and thus, he betrayed her heart.
At this point, the scene began to speed up, flashing by scene after scene, finally settling on a village littered with corpses. He was covered in blood, his eyes were bloodshot, and a dagger in his hand was deeply embedded in her heart.
Even after he killed her, she still smiled and said to him, "It's okay..."
Upon seeing this, Shi Chan felt a sharp pain in his heart, his face filled with remorse and tenderness.
At that moment, Shi Chan suddenly wanted to go to her, to say the words he had so desperately wanted to say but couldn't utter in her dying moments, to tell her—
"I love you……"
He walked slowly, step by step, into the alley. Finally, their figures, standing together in an embrace, came into view. But suddenly, everything in front of him vanished. Shi Chan's vision blurred for a moment. When he could see things again, everything around him was in chaos, and a middle-aged monk in gray robes was standing in front of him.
The monk smiled, clasped his hands together, and bowed deeply to Shi Chan in a Buddhist salute.
Shi Chan was stunned for a moment, then quickly bowed in return.
"Shi Chan," the gray-robed monk called softly in a gentle and pleasant voice.
Master Shichan asked in confusion, "How does the Venerable One know Master Shichan's name? May I ask who the Venerable One is?"
The grey-robed monk gently shook his head, not answering his question. He smiled and said, "The prayer wheel outside was placed there by this humble monk ten thousand years ago. Anyone who comes to steal it will fall into the illusion of their own memories upon touching it. Whoever sees through the illusion first and awakens will have the prayer wheel. In this way, those who come to steal the treasure can avoid disputes and fights, avoid bloodshed, and avoid adding unnecessary bloodshed."
Shi Chan gratefully said, "Thank you for informing me, Venerable One."
The gray-robed monk nodded, his voice gentle, and continued, "Master Shichan, I deliberately left a wisp of my divine consciousness within the prayer wheel before my Nirvana. This is because I foresaw a calamity for Buddhism and an exceptionally tragic demonic tribulation before my Nirvana. The demonic tribulation will ultimately affect innocent people, causing them immense suffering. Master Shichan, you must do everything in your power to overcome this demonic tribulation and save the people from their misery."
With a resolute expression, Shi Chan said, "Rest assured, Venerable One, this humble monk will not hesitate to sacrifice myself to resist the demonic calamity and save all suffering beings."
The grey-robed monk nodded in satisfaction and continued in a gentle voice, "The root cause of this calamity for Buddhism lies with the seeds sown by this humble monk. It was the fault of all the Buddhist disciples, and it was also caused by you. The one who tied the knot must untie it; this calamity must be resolved by you. The fox girl is innocent and has become the cause of this Buddhist calamity, which was originally only due to this humble monk's compassion. Master Shi Chan, you must do your best to guide her towards goodness, save her, and also save our Buddhist sect from this calamity."
Zen Master pondered the monk's words carefully. After a long while, he was puzzled and wanted to ask him why he said that it was he who had planted the cause. What was the meaning of that moment of pity?
Before he could speak, the gray-robed monk shook his head and chuckled, "This humble monk is far too concerned about this calamity of demons and the suffering of Buddhas. I even left a wisp of my divine consciousness to tell you about these things. In truth, what this humble monk is thinking is exactly what you are thinking. Enough, enough, this humble monk is truly obsessed. Forgive me, forgive me."
He paused for a moment, then looked at Shi Chan with gentle eyes and said, "Shi Chan, try to get out of the illusion of your memories. The prayer wheel outside is called Brahma Enlightenment. If you can be the first to get out of the illusion, then use this treasure to save all sentient beings!"
After saying that, the gray-robed monk's figure suddenly began to fade and disappear.
"This humble monk will humbly follow your teachings, Venerable One." Seeing this, Master Shi Chan put aside all his doubts and simply bowed. Then he looked up at the grey-robed monk and respectfully asked, "But I have not yet asked your Dharma name, Venerable One?"
The monk smiled and shook his head without answering. A moment later, his figure suddenly dispersed, turning into specks of golden light that vanished in the blink of an eye.
Looking at the golden light scattering across the sky, Shi Chan felt a sense of loss.
