Chapter 14 Let’s Be Together
Lu Xiang was talking to Fu Qinhui when she saw the neighbor's sister-in-law running over and saying, "Ah Xiang, your dad and Lin Mu are fighting! That bastard is even clamoring to date you. I ran back first, so you better be careful."
When Mother Lu heard this, she was so frightened that she couldn't speak clearly: "Is everything okay?"
Lu Xiang's suppressed anger suddenly surged up. She was about to leave when Fu Qinhui stopped her and said, "I'll go check on you. Are you home?"
Lu Xiang frowned and said, "He's coming for me. No need for you, I'll do it!"
Fu Qinhui was stunned. He didn't expect that she was so well-behaved and pretty, but Lu Xiang had a wild and lively nature.
Lu Xiang dragged her mother over with her. As Lu Danian and Lin Mu fought, the uncles and aunts working in the fields came to help. Lin Mu was a timid man, and the only time he managed to take Lu Danian down was with a surprise attack.
Seeing so many farmers wanting to beat him up, he ran faster than a rabbit.
The villagers looked down on him, seeing that he ran so fast that they couldn't catch up. They picked up stones and tiles from the ground and threw them far away, hitting his back. Lin Mu ran away with a grin on his face.
Lu Xiang didn't see anyone when she came.
Mother Lu quickly checked on Lu Danian. She saw that he was covered in dirt and rolled several times on the ground after being dragged by Lin Mu. He didn't suffer any serious injuries, but he was very angry at Lin Mu's nonsense!
"That bastard." Lu Danian said hatefully.
Mother Lu was also a little angry. There was no law in this world.
"I'll go find the village chief." The people around volunteered.
No one realized that Lu Xiang was so beautiful before because she rarely went out. No one expected that the Lu family had such a beauty.
All those present were men, so they naturally understood what that scum Lin Mu was going to do.
Lu Xiang said, "Dad, please ask for leave first."
Lu Danian was still holding on and said, "It's okay."
But Mother Lu, who was standing nearby, noticed blood on his arm. The people around him hurriedly said, "Go back and bandage it properly!"
Only then did Lu Danian go back with them.
Lu Xiang returned home and wrote a letter of denunciation. She'd read the previous plot before transmigrating and knew what Lin Mu did to make money. In his previous life, he'd attempted coercion but failed, and in this one, he was trying to use the same tactics again, using public opinion to ruin her reputation so he could profit from it. Such a person deserved death!
Lu Xiang wrote a letter of denunciation and also went to her neighbor's house to ask for three chicken feathers. The postman would give priority to delivering such letters.
After mailing the letter, Lu Xiang searched all her pockets and found all her belongings. She found 25 cents and went to the clinic to buy a small bottle of gentian violet for 10 cents. The cotton balls were given to her by the clinic staff. She took them home to disinfect her father.
Fu Qinhui came over soon, bringing a few eggs. Food was scarce these days, so only those who were in love were willing to give out food.
Lu Xiang had just applied medicine to her father's wound when she saw Fu Qinhui coming again. Her thoughts had changed. She had previously wanted to live a down-to-earth life on her own and then find an opportunity to make some money, but she had misjudged the current environment.
The countryside was conservative, and she had returned home after her marriage. Good news doesn't travel far, but bad news travels a thousand miles. If she insisted on staying at home, her parents would be under a lot of pressure. Today there was Lin Mu, tomorrow there might be someone else.
The villagers are all scolding her now, but what about next time, or the time after that? She doesn't dare to gamble.
Fu Qinhui was silent and taciturn. Lu Xiang seemed to have made some important decision. She walked over to him solemnly and said, "I want to ask you a question. Do you really want to be with me, or are you just pretending to be with me?"
Speaking of the men in the village, Fu Qinhui was the one with the best character. Lu Xiang still trusted him because of his previous life's endorsement.
Fu Qinhui said, "Really." He was still a bit traditional in his heart. After worshipping heaven and earth, they were family. He often went to Lu Xiang's house. Every time Fu San's wife saw him, she would laugh at him, saying that he was too old to stay.
He only had three days off to get married this time, one day for the wedding and one day for the incident. Today was already the third day. He still had to work and really wanted Lu Xiang to go back with him.
Lu Xiang asked, "After we get married, I want to give the 300 yuan to my parents to buy food. Do you agree?" The village attaches great importance to gifts and dowries, but Lu Xiang's family doesn't even have a decent set of bedding. Without a return gift, most people would not accept it.
Fu Qinhui said, "Okay." His mother had originally asked him to give the gift to Lu Xiang. Then he took out the money and gave it to Lu Xiang.
Lu Xiang said: "If you have any request to me, you can tell me."
Fu Qinhui thought for a moment and said, "Can you be a little gentler?" He had been watching Lu Xiang fighting with others.
Lu Xiang's eyebrows shot up when she heard this, as if she strongly disagreed with the stereotype that women must be gentle. She was about to say something, but then she thought of Fu Qinhui's help several times and swallowed it back. "I'll try my best." Then she said, "By the way, I have a question. I don't have food coupons. Can I go buy food?"
Fu Qinhui said, "I know someone." He worked at the supply and marketing cooperative, where they had grain, all supplied with coupons. Fu Qinhui knew an employee at the grain depot. Their company had good pay, and since several of the employees at home couldn't finish the grain they were given, they had coupons and sold the excess.
He was not the only one in their unit who wanted to sell grain, and everyone else was looking for him to act as a go-between.
Fu Qinhui took Lu Xiang to his home in the county. The bald man who sold grain smiled and asked, "Why are you here?"
Fu Qinhui said, "My wife wants to buy some grain. I thought you have great powers and could buy some without coupons."
The bald man said, "Oh, you're married now, and your sister-in-law is so pretty. We're all business acquaintances, but Brother Fu is not a stranger. How much food do you want?"
Lu Xiang inquired about the price of grain. It was slightly more expensive than at the grain store, but acceptable without a receipt. The black market in the county was even more expensive. Ordinary people who wanted to buy grain without a receipt didn't know how to do it.
Lu Xiang asked for 50 jin (approximately 100 kg) of soybean oil, 100 jin (approximately 100 kg) of rice, 100 jin (approximately 100 kg) of flour, and 100 jin (approximately 100 kg) of whole grains. The total cost was 150 yuan. Lu Xiang paid readily, but she still had to pay another 10 yuan to find a truck to take the goods back. The payment was a bit painful, but she had no choice but to take it.
Transportation involves sharing risks, so naturally others want to make more money.
After paying the money, they will pick up the goods at the village entrance in the evening.
The matter was settled and everyone could breathe a sigh of relief. While chatting, Lu Xiang found out that Bald Brother also had a job as a truck escort at the grain depot.
Lu Xiang asked, "Will your cart go through our village?"
Bald Brother said: "Let's go!"
Lu Xiang said, "Try to avoid it. It's not peaceful where we are."
Bald Brother smiled and said, "Nowhere is peaceful." He didn't seem to take it to heart.
Lu Xiang said: "It's true, I heard there were robberies on the road."
The bald man laughed heartily, then said, "Whoever dares to rob is seeking death, isn't he?"
Seeing this, Lu Xiang stopped trying to persuade her.
After thanking Bald Brother, Lu Xiang and Fu Qinhui headed back to the village. They boarded a bus, but when they got on, there were no seats left. They had no choice but to stand. The conductor kept inviting people on board, and the bus became increasingly crowded. The two of them sat close together, and the road was bumpy. Fu Qinhui held the railing with one hand and protected Lu Xiang with the other.
After several sudden stops, Lu Xiang subconsciously hugged Fu Qinhui's waist, but she immediately let go when she realized what was happening.
Fu Qinhui looked upright, staring straight out the window, except for a strange pink tint on his ears.
