"Uncle Yan." Tang Wan's gaze was somewhat evasive, and she stood obediently like a child who had done something wrong, without moving.
Yan Pingshun sighed and ultimately swallowed his words.
He patted Tang Wan on the shoulder, "Uncle Yan's home is also your home. What child doesn't go home? You can't run away from home like this time, understand?"
"Yes, it won't happen again." Tang Wan replied obediently, her fingers unconsciously fidgeting, revealing her unease.
"If you want to keep your hair, go ahead. It actually looks pretty good after a while. I'll talk to your homeroom teacher about it later. As long as it's something you want to do and doesn't break the law, Uncle Yan will support you."
Yan Pingshun pretended not to see it and ruffled her hair. He didn't understand why young people would dye their hair such bright colors, but he still tried to understand and respect the child's wishes.
Tang Wan smiled faintly and nodded.
"Is your Aunt Jiang asleep?"
"She's asleep."
"Then I'll carry her back to her room. She's a restless sleeper. Look at your dark circles under your eyes. Try to get a good night's sleep tonight. Do you want to go somewhere fun? You've already skipped a week of classes, so why not take another ten days or two weeks off and let's go on a family trip?"
"I'll wait until summer vacation. I want to go back to school. I've fallen behind in a lot of schoolwork recently and I need to catch up."
"Okay, don't overwork yourself, your health is the most important thing."
Like an ordinary father, Yan Pingshun rarely expresses his concern verbally, but rather shows it through his actions.
It seems that all the sweet words he uttered in his life were reserved for Jiang Yu. Nevertheless, Yan Pingshun still cared for Tang Wan in his own way, albeit somewhat awkwardly.
The rebellious phase of adolescence ended in just one week. In fact, even if Yan Nian hadn't gone to the alley to hug her, Tang Wan would have come to her senses in a week.
But thanks to them, Tang Wan realized more deeply that life is her own, she should live for herself, and she should cherish those who are truly good to her, instead of clinging to things she can't have, or even ruining her own life.
Time passed by little by little, and the days went by in an ordinary way, yet they were filled with a quiet happiness.
Just when they thought such days would continue forever, bad news suddenly struck, catching everyone off guard.
When the two arrived at the hospital, Yan Pingshun was already covered with a white sheet. According to the doctor, Yan Pingshun had already died before they arrived, without leaving a single word.
Although Jiang Yu was held in Yan Pingshun's arms, she was barely clinging to life and was on the verge of death. Even if a miracle occurred, she would spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.
"Family members, please come and claim it."
The two walked heavily toward the morgue. For a moment, neither of them was willing to lift the white sheet covering the body.
Looking at the two underage children, the doctor did not rush them, giving them ample time to react.
"Yan Nian, go take a look."
"good."
Although they said this, their hands were tightly clasped together, and they didn't take a single step.
"Aunt Jiang is still waiting for us."
Yan Nian's lips trembled slightly as she responded with a soft "yes".
The two supported each other as they walked to the ice bed, their hands clasped tightly together, as if they were grasping at the last straw.
Yan Nian closed her eyes and opened them again before finally lifting the lid with trembling hands.
Yan Pingshun's face appeared before them, his complexion so pale it was devoid of any color, as calm as if he were asleep.
“Dad…” Yan Nian called out softly to Yan Pingshun with red eyes, but there was no response.
Tang Wan bit her lip tightly to keep from crying out loud.
There was no arguing, no wailing; the two stubborn figures, their backs trembling slightly, held each other's hands tightly, processing this fact.
They had clearly agreed to go on a family trip during summer vacation, they had clearly agreed to go furniture shopping for their new house this weekend, they had clearly said goodbye to each other before leaving in the morning... clearly... clearly, until they received the phone call, they were happy...
"Dad..." Yan Nian had so much to say, but didn't know what to say.
He grasped the hand that had lost all warmth and knelt before Yan Pingshun.
"Dad, please, at least don't take Mom away too... please... waaaaah... Dad... Dad..." Yan Nian finally couldn't hold back and burst into tears.
Tang Wan wiped away her tears, but they fell so fast that she couldn't stop them.
Her heart was throbbing with pain, but she knew she couldn't break down along with it.
Tang Wan put her hand on Yan Nian's shoulder, letting Yan Nian vent his frustrations.
They couldn't understand it. They were discussing where to go on holiday and what style to decorate their new house that morning... How... how could they be separated by death?
"Girl, this is your room. Do you like it? I made this swing myself. I haven't made these things in a long time, so I'm a bit rusty. I heard that little girls really like these kinds of things these days."
"Wanwan got first place again? That's great! Uncle Yan will cook you a big meal tonight!"
"And what about me? I came in second."
"You? Just to take advantage of being number one, I'll give you the right to order a dish too."
"Wanwan, if you feel unwell in the future, you must tell Uncle Yan. You can't just bear it by yourself, understand?" In her daze, seven-year-old Tang Wan was held in Yan Pingshun's arms. His tone was nagging, but his movements were extremely gentle.
Scenes from the past flashed before Tang Wan's eyes, the scenes changing rapidly, sometimes a single sentence, sometimes a fragment, quite chaotic, but everyone was smiling...
Tang Wan disregarded everything else, covered her mouth and rushed to the toilet. She kept gagging, and tears streamed down her face.
