"Can you still walk?" Tang Wan reached out her hand, but the clean-cut girl made Xiao Liuzi pull his hand back. He gritted his teeth and stood up, but uncontrollably fell backward. Fortunately, Tang Wan was quick-witted and grabbed him.
"Thank you." Xiao Liuzi leaned against the wall. "Sorry for getting you dirty." He didn't dare look at Tang Wan when he said this.
Her attire suggested she was from a happy and well-off family. He could fight thugs, but when he saw these neatly dressed students, he felt an overwhelming sense of inferiority.
"Dirty? Where?" The girl's voice was as clear as a spring.
Xiao Liu looked up and saw Tang Wan looking at his school uniform with a puzzled expression. It was clean and there wasn't a single mud stain on it.
Xiao Liu opened his mouth again and again, but couldn't say anything.
"It's filthy, where did this little beggar come from?"
"Mom, he smells awful!"
"Poor thing, are you alright?"
"Get out of my way!"
"Children without parents are so pitiful."
"A wild child without parents! A wild child! A bastard!"
"His mother ran away; she doesn't want him anymore!"
These words and various faces kept flashing through his mind. Xiao Liu's expression was furrowed, and his head was buzzing with pain.
"Hey, are you alright?" Tang Wan frowned as she looked at Xiao Liuzi, whose face was flushed.
Tang Wan squatted down, took out a silk scarf from her schoolbag, and bandaged Xiao Liuzi's wound.
"Hey, kid." Tang Wan gently patted Xiao Liu's cheek. The boy mumbled something but didn't open his eyes, and his breathing became rapid.
Tang Wan touched his forehead, sighed, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and resignedly carried him on her back. Fortunately, Xiao Liuzi was much lighter than a normal ten-year-old, so even fourteen-year-old Tang Wan could easily carry him.
"Where did you kidnap this child from?"
"I found it."
"Let me carry you, go change your clothes."
"I'm going to buy something and I'll be right back."
In my daze, I heard two voices talking, one slightly old, the other ethereal and clear, but both seemed to be drifting from a very far place...
When he woke up again, he was lying in a completely unfamiliar place. The blanket smelled of sunshine, which made him feel very relaxed. Xiao Liuzi slowly closed his eyes, and the next second, he suddenly sat up.
He jumped up too suddenly, and everything went black before his eyes, causing him to fall back down.
"You have a high fever, so lie down. Your leg isn't a big problem; it'll be fine in a few days."
Xiao Liu then noticed that there was an old man standing in front of the table in the room, holding a scale and picking out medicinal herbs.
"I have no money."
The clothes I was wearing had been changed. I didn't even need to look to know that they were comfortable and fit me perfectly, without being itchy at all.
"What should we do then? Why don't you stay and work for me?" The old man chuckled, placed the scale on the table, and walked over.
"I'm very strong, I can help you carry things." The speaker meant no harm, but the listener took it to heart. Xiao Liu lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, his eyes empty.
“You’re very strong? You look much thinner than other kids your age. I’m carrying wooden crates full of precious medicinal herbs. What if you break them?” Chen Xiong said, while covering his head with a wet towel.
Xiao Liu was forced to close his eyes, and his senses were amplified.
"I'm very good at fighting."
"This isn't a mafia operation."
"Then what do you want me to do?"
"What to do? I'll have to think about that carefully." With that, the old man's footsteps faded into the distance.
Where are you going?
"I'm not going anywhere, so you can just lie there in peace. This old man has no intention of hiring a patient to work for him."
Where is the person who brought me here?
"You mean Wanwan? She went to change her clothes. That little girl is quite strong; she carried you here. What happened?"
Xiao Liuzi stopped talking.
"I guessed it. You're young, but you're quite responsible. Where are your parents?"
"Dead." Xiao Liu's tone was flat and without any fluctuation.
Now it was Chen Xiong's turn to remain silent.
"You don't need to do this. It would be better if they were all dead."
"May I have your name?"
"Little Six".
"Little Six? Sixes bring good fortune?"
"It's just that it sounds good." It doesn't even have a surname.
Xiao Liuzi lay on the bed and chuckled self-deprecatingly.
"Where do you live? Where do you go to school?"
"Anywhere is fine." He's all alone, so what difference does it make where he lives? "I'm not going to school anymore, it's pointless."
Whether it was teachers or classmates, good or bad, they all annoyed him.
Chen Xiong was speechless, unsure of what to say. The door creaked open, and Tang Wan walked in, carrying a shoebox.
"master."
"Hmm, have you had your ginger tea?"
"Drink it." Tang Wan opened the shoebox and placed the shoes by the bed. She got up, removed the towel, and then realized that Xiao Liu Zi was already awake.
"You're awake? Your shoes bravely met their end, so I got you a new pair. Thanks for your help." The tone wasn't condescending; it was as natural as asking about the weather.
"It was bad to begin with."
"That's perfect, you have new shoes now." Tang Wan put the towel back over his head.
Xiao Liu was taken aback by the unexpected reply, while Chen Xiong burst out laughing.
"That's just how this girl is. Just wear it. Cut off the tag. There aren't any kids your age around her, and nobody else can wear it except you."
