"I remember he was only seven years old, right? This woman is crazy, isn't she mentally disturbed, attacking a child? Even if we take a step back, he was her own brother back then, right? I don't think the Meng family did anything to her, did they?"
“Jealousy is a terrible thing.” Meng Wan seemed much calmer. “So I suspect that she already knew she was a child of the Tang family.”
"Neither of the two families knew, so how did she know?" Although Lan Xing was puzzled, she never doubted Meng Wan's judgment.
"That's what I'm wondering about."
"So what do you plan to do now?" Lan Xing asked in a low voice.
"Play with her."
Lan Xing's eyes lit up, and her smile became somewhat eerie.
"but……"
"But what?"
“But first we need to figure out what she did to Meng Zhiyao.” Meng Wan frowned.
"Are you going to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Meng?"
"Words are no proof."
"Are you afraid they won't believe you?" Lan Xing immediately understood Meng Wan's unspoken meaning.
"What do you think of the daughter you raised for seventeen years versus the biological daughter who just came home less than a month ago?" Meng Wan smiled, but the smile didn't reach her eyes.
"What if?" Lan Xing asked, sounding uncertain. She touched her nose to hide her embarrassment.
Meng Wan smiled and patted her head, "I prefer to let the evidence speak for itself."
People's hearts are unpredictable; if something can be explained with evidence, there's no need to waste words.
Lan Xing pursed her lips. Sometimes, those involved are blinded by their own involvement; perhaps even she hadn't realized she'd unknowingly become entangled with the Meng family. Wanting to find evidence before explaining the situation was probably also because she didn't want to see suspicion or scrutiny from the Meng family.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Lan Xing's eyes were full of determination; at least she trusted Meng Wan unconditionally!
Meng Wan shook her head. "She's not worth our concern."
“You always have a plan.” Lan Xing handed the helmet to Meng Wan. “By the way, the teacher was talking about the sports meet today. How many events are you planning to sign up for this time?”
"Can I not participate?"
"Then Peng Zhe will probably be nagging you for a month. Is that alright?" Lan Xing raised an eyebrow and asked, feigning seriousness.
Meng Wan also put on a stern face, "It's related."
After saying that, the two chuckled softly.
As they said, Tang Zhiyi was just one person, not enough to make them care too much.
"Want to come up?" Meng Wan invited from downstairs.
Lan Xing shook his head and put the helmet away. "Let's do it next time. Next time, I'll have to bring a gift. I can't visit empty-handed for the first time; I still need to show proper etiquette."
If they were just ordinary friends, it wouldn't matter, but Meng Wan's situation is special. The more polite they are, the more they will show how much they value Meng Wan. If Meng's family is sensible, they will know how to treat Meng Wan.
Although I know Meng Wan wouldn't let me suffer, as a friend, I also want to be a source of confidence for her so that she won't be wronged.
Meng Wan understood Lan Xing's thoughts, and they bumped fists in tacit agreement, which was their unique way of greeting each other.
"I'm leaving." Lan Xing waved and walked away gracefully under Meng Wan's gaze.
When I went upstairs, the house was eerily quiet.
"I'm back," Meng Wan called out as she changed her shoes.
"You're back! I just washed my hands and was about to eat." Meng Zhili came out carrying a plate. "Is the matter resolved?"
"Hmm." Meng Wan knew he was talking about what happened last night.
"Where are Tang Li and Zhi Yao?"
"They're in their room," Qin Yi answered Meng Wan's question. "Wanwan, go and call them out for dinner."
"good."
Even though it was her own room, Meng Wan still knocked on the door before turning the handle and going in.
Unexpectedly, Tang Li, who is usually very active, actually sat quietly next to Meng Zhiyao, drawing something on a piece of paper with a pencil. Obviously, he didn't have any artistic talent and only drew a few species whose meaning was unclear.
Meng Zhiyao held the picture book, gazing at it intently with a serious expression, as if he were looking at some profound work of art. Beside him lay a recently completed painting, and upon closer inspection, a barely noticeable flower could be seen in the corner.
As for the Tyrannosaurus Rex, it was curled up in the corner, sleeping soundly.
"They're quite well-behaved, aren't they?"
"Tang Wan!" Tang Li was excited for a second, but then, as if suddenly remembering something, he looked at the bookshelf next to him with a guilty conscience.
Meng Wan looked suspicious and walked toward the bookshelf. Tang Li swallowed, wanting to say something, but Meng Zhiyao suddenly stood up and covered another book with the sketchbook.
"What's wrong?" Meng Wan stopped in her tracks when she saw this.
"Hungry."
"Yes! I'm hungry! I'm hungry!"
Tang Li hurriedly answered, but Meng Zhiyao only glanced at him indifferently.
Children have their own ways of handling things, and it's obvious that Meng Zhiyao is deliberately covering for Tang Li. Since that's the case, Meng Wan won't insist on getting to the bottom of it.
"Let's go out to eat, Zhiyao. Take Tang Li to wash his hands."
Meng Zhiyao nodded, and Tang Li immediately moved closer to him, but Meng Zhiyao dodged away with some disgust.
Meng Wan followed behind the two, watching their interaction, which she found quite interesting.
At the dinner table, Tang Li swung his toes and ate with relish. Qin Yi was pleased to see this and moved his favorite dishes to a different spot in front of him.
"Eat more if you like it. Auntie will make it for you again next time you come."
Tang Li nodded, and was about to pick up some food when Meng Wan stopped him with her chopsticks.
"Thank you, Auntie." Tang Li was quick-witted and immediately understood.
"He's quite a smart kid," Meng Boqun remarked.
"Yes, Yaoyao seems to really like Lili. She's made her first good friend, right, Yaoyao?" Qin Yi looked at Meng Zhiyao, who paused for a moment, then looked away and buried herself in her food.
The family had long been used to Meng Zhiyao's silence.
"But, Lili, why did you suddenly run out?"
Meng Wan paused, but Tang Li had already blurted out the whole story.
"It's all because of that Tang Zhiyi. She couldn't argue with me, so she tried to push me down the stairs. But Tyrannosaurus Rex stopped her, and she fell down the stairs herself. Then she accused me of pushing her. Ugh!"
The child's straightforwardness dispelled the intricacies between the two families, yet it caused Mr. and Mrs. Meng, as well as Meng Zhili, to put down their chopsticks.
"Lili, what did you say?"
Tang Li, oblivious to the awkward atmosphere, swallowed the meat in his mouth and looked directly into Qin Yi's eyes.
"I said, Tang Zhiyi tried to push me down the stairs, but she slipped and fell herself. She even told the villa's servants that I pushed her. I got angry and ran out..."
Qin Yi couldn't hear anything more she said after that.
The chopsticks fell to the ground with a clatter, and an eerie silence descended.
"She's bad! She hits people! She's bad!"
