On the other side, Meng Wan asked Butler Chen to pick up Tang Li at the designated location, while she and Meng Zhiyao were driven back by Yan Nian.
Since the car couldn't be driven in from outside, Yan Nian got out and accompanied the two inside.
"Get some rest and don't think too much." Meng Wan held Meng Zhiyao's hand, her eyes full of worry and concern as she looked at Yan Nian.
"Don't worry, I'll take good care of myself." Yan Nian tucked a stray strand of Meng Wan's hair behind her ear. "I'll bring a gift and give your parents a proper visit next time."
Meng Wan nodded.
"Stop staying up so late. At this stage, losing one or two more orders won't make a big difference to the Yan family business." Meng Wan knew the burden Yan Nian was carrying, and given his strong-willed nature, he was determined not to let the Yan family business decline under his leadership, which was why he was working so hard.
"If you're taking the two little ones to the amusement park next week, I'll come pick you up. With so much going on lately, just relax and unwind."
She knew perfectly well that Yan Nian was changing the subject. This guy would never casually agree to something he couldn't promise.
"Okay." Meng Wan stared straight at him, no longer dwelling on the topic.
"Go upstairs, I'll go back once I see you go inside." He said this, but Yan Nian was entwining her hair with affection, clearly saying one thing and meaning another.
Meng Zhiyao shook Meng Wan's hand.
"good evening."
"Good night." Yan Nian stood there, a faint smile on her lips.
Meng Wan, who is usually decisive and efficient in her actions, only hesitates and looks back when she's with Yan Nian. But... isn't Yan Nian the same?
The next morning, Meng Wan went out alone to the traditional Chinese medicine clinic. Meng Zhili was helping with preparations for the shop's opening the next day, so he didn't go.
She pushed open the door with practiced ease, only to find it locked. Meng Wan knocked, and soon Chen Liu came and opened the door.
"Young Miss, why are you here at this hour?" Chen Liu asked, somewhat surprised. "Did the Meng family do something to you? I told you to move in a while ago, didn't I? I've disliked that Meng Zhili from the very beginning. The other day he came over and said he'd done something wrong, and I gave him a left hook right away..."
"You hit him?" Meng Wan thought of the bruise on Meng Zhili's face when she came home from school that day.
"Yes...yes." Chen Liu was a little stunned by Meng Wan's question, and felt inexplicably guilty.
"Why did you hit him?" Meng Wan asked, puzzled.
"Didn't he make you unhappy?" Chen Liu asked, looking puzzled.
Meng Wan roughly understood Meng Zhili's thought process, but she couldn't care less about that at the moment.
"Where is Master?"
“After he came back last night, he stayed in the pharmacy the whole time. I even brought him his meals. If I hadn’t forced him to go back to sleep last night, he probably would have stayed up all night. When I got up this morning, I didn’t see my master in the yard. I thought he hadn’t woken up yet, but it turned out he was already in the pharmacy tinkering with something.”
Chen Liu frowned. "Did something happen?"
"Don't act impulsively next time." Meng Wan flicked his forehead and walked towards the pharmacy.
Chen Liu rubbed his forehead, completely bewildered.
"Is this a case of being wronged or not?" Chen Liu muttered to himself, picking up the broom he had placed next to the door frame and continuing to sweep the yard he hadn't finished sweeping earlier.
Meng Wan rushed straight to the pharmacy, but stopped just before she was about to go in and knocked on the door.
"Let's leave breakfast here for now, I'll eat it later."
"Master, it's me, Meng Wan."
The voice inside paused for a moment, then said, "Come in."
After receiving permission, Meng Wan pushed open the door and went in. She saw Chen Xiong sitting at the table, which was piled with many ancient medical books. He was wearing reading glasses and pushed up the frames with his index finger when he looked up.
"I knew you would come."
"Is there really no other way?" Meng Wan looked at the messy books on the table. Although she already knew the answer, she still couldn't help but hold onto a sliver of hope.
Chen Xiong sighed and closed the book.
"Wanwan, I wish there were other ways more than you do."
Meng Wan fell silent.
Chen Xiong and she knew the medical books and ancient texts here by heart; they could point out the exact page and line of any question. But now, one was pressing for answers, and the other was spending the whole night searching—clearly, they had reached a dead end.
Despite this, they still refused to give up.
What if... what if I'm careless and just happen to miss that chapter?
"How is Yan Nian...?"
Meng Wan shook her head.
Chen Xiong looked older.
"This child is strong-willed and stubborn, and rarely shows his emotions. Wanwan, you'll have to take extra care of him these days."
"I see."
Unable to find the answer she wanted, Meng Wan did not give up. She and Chen Xiong flipped through medical books until night fell, but they still did not find a single useful piece of information.
On Monday, the breakfast shop officially opened, and Meng Zhili and his wife went there before dawn to prepare. After finishing breakfast, Meng Wan still had some time, so she took a detour to the breakfast shop to take a look.
Business was booming, and the Meng couple were extremely busy. Meng Zhili was also inside helping with cashiering and packing.
"Wanwan? Have you had breakfast?" Qin Yiyi, who had just come downstairs, immediately saw Meng Wan at the door.
"I've eaten, and it's still early, so I came to take a look."
Qin Yi glanced at the time on the wall. "It's almost time. Zhili, stop working and go to school. You two are in your final year of high school; studying is important. Come over to play after school if you want."
Unexpectedly, they were rushed out as soon as they arrived, leaving Meng Wan and Meng Zhili, who was pushed out, somewhat bewildered.
"These two cups of soy milk are for your journey. Mom is a bit busy here and can't take care of you. Be careful on your way to school."
