Chapter 119 Killing the Chicken
A few more days passed, filled with eating and sleeping, and when I looked in the mirror, I realized I'd gained weight from winter. But I'd also gotten much fairer—a healthy, chubby figure full of hope!
The honey bread rolls and cookies were devoured by me and my dogs in just a few days; the sweet aroma still lingers in my mouth.
I had to waste another day making more bread rolls and cookies, hoping to eat them for a little longer.
These cookies aren't scallion flavored, but milky flavored. They're softer and crumbly than scallion cookies, and have a wonderful milky taste.
I stayed up all night watching TV, and was woken up by shouts from outside the courtyard just as dawn broke the next day.
Since I killed the hunter last time, I've gotten a bit cocky, feeling invincible and capable of shooting anyone at any time.
So he wasn't nervous at all. Still half asleep, he put on his cotton-padded coat, grabbed his crossbow, and went out.
"Hey girl, are you home?"
As soon as he pushed open the windshield door, he heard shouts outside. Upon hearing it was Brother Liu's voice, he hid the crossbow in his cotton-padded coat and tucked it into his lower back.
Peeking through the crack in the door, he saw that only Brother Liu and Taozi had come, so he opened the gate.
"So early, Brother Liu."
He opened the door and greeted Brother Liu warmly, then nodded to Taozi in a friendly gesture.
Taozi waved excitedly when he saw me nod.
Brother Liu skipped the unnecessary pleasantries and got straight to the point: "The New Year is just around the corner, and we're slaughtering a pig at home. Your sister-in-law insisted that I come and invite you to join the festivities."
I was somewhat flattered. Although we did negotiate back and forth a few times, only very close friends could be invited to eat pork when the family slaughtered a pig.
Since they specifically came to invite me to eat pork, it wouldn't be right for me to refuse, so I readily agreed: "Okay, I'll get ready and head over."
"Let's get in our car and go. Take your time packing, there's no rush."
When I heard that we were going by car, I realized that these two had driven all the way here just to get me to eat pork. With diesel so scarce these days, I really felt sorry for them.
He blurted out what he was thinking: "Why would it be worth it for you to drive all the way here to call me, wasting so much diesel fuel?"
"Hey girl, people are the most important thing. We can exchange diesel for grain. We can grow grain every year, so what's there to be afraid of?"
Brother Liu waved his hand, indicating that my heartache was of no importance.
Seeing Brother Liu's attitude, I don't need to be pretentious anymore. I'll just take some things with me to repay the favor.
I beckoned Brother Liu and Taozi into the house: "Come on in, what are you doing at the gate?"
Brother Liu insisted on not entering the yard.
"Go pack your things, no rush, we'll just wait here."
See, this is a good person, with a very strong sense of propriety; he won't even enter the home of a single girl.
Unlike those three robbers and the hunter, who would rather die in my house than not feel at ease.
I didn't force them to come in, and turned back into the courtyard.
Just as I was about to go inside to change my clothes, a thought suddenly flashed through my mind, and I turned back to the gate of the courtyard.
"Brother Liu, could you kill a few chickens for me while you wait for me? No need to process them, just kill them."
Although I was a little embarrassed, I still stated my request directly.
Brother Liu was initially hesitant to enter the yard, but as soon as he heard that he was going to help kill the chicken, he rolled up his sleeves and headed into the yard.
"Hey, what's wrong with that? Where's the chicken? I'll kill it for you right away."
I pointed to the corner between the west wing and the main room: "The chicken coop is here, there are 5 roosters in total, let's pick 3 to kill."
Brother Liu stood with his hands on his hips, looking at the chicken coop and making plans.
"Get a basin to catch the chicken blood, and also get a sharp knife."
"Okay!"
After listening to Brother Liu's instructions, I quickly went back to the house to find a basin and a knife.
He grabbed a small stainless steel basin and used the sharp knife he had scavenged from the hunter.
Taozi went into the chicken coop, grabbed three roosters, and magically pulled out several pieces of rope from his pocket to tie up their legs.
He took the three chickens to the other end of the yard, where the chicken coop was out of sight.
Brother Liu pointed to the ground beneath his feet: "Come on, put the basin here."
I immediately put the basin in the designated place.
Brother Liu stopped talking. Taozi grabbed the chicken and exposed its neck. Brother Liu slashed down, and the rooster let out a hoarse crow, flapped a few times, and then went still.
The chicken blood flowed into the basin, but stopped flowing after a while.
Taozi picked up another chicken, and Brother Liu swiftly killed it with his knife.
I felt a little heartbroken watching it. After all, it was a chicken I had raised from a chick to adulthood, and now it was being killed without any resistance. It was hard not to feel uncomfortable.
But no matter how much I wanted to resist, I couldn't resist my craving. I really wanted to eat a free-range chicken. The meat was so plump, and stewed with some mushrooms, it would definitely taste better than a wild chicken!
Thinking about this, I stopped watching the chicken killing and decided not to let it affect my mood for eating chicken later.
He turned around and went back inside to start packing the things he was taking to the White Town base.
I had planned it beforehand: to bring Sister Liu a box of lard face cream and two bars of soap.
I also brought along a large plastic bag of freshly baked honey bread rolls, which I divided into two plastic bags.
Based on the principle of sharing among those who see it, one bag was given to Brother Liu's family, and the other bag to Taozi.
There was still a lot of wine in the basement. I couldn't finish the mulberry wine and cherry wine by myself, so I found four empty bottles and poured two bottles of mulberry wine and two bottles of cherry wine.
He slapped his forehead and remembered that he also knew an old man from the base, so he poured the old man a bottle of mulberry wine.
Okay, now that the mulberry wine is half gone, I don't have to worry about not being able to finish it anymore.
Looking at what I had in my hands, I felt like something was missing. Seeing that I had accumulated several boxes of eggs, I took another box.
That's enough, I even feel like I've been a bit too generous.
It's never wrong to be overly polite, so there's no problem.
Thinking it was perfectly appropriate to take these things, I first moved the eggs into the car. When I went back out to get the soap and wine bottle, they had already killed the chicken.
Brother Liu was carrying a chicken in each hand. In his excitement, he picked up the chicken and shook it, saying loudly, "Girl, what are you carrying? Are you coming to my house to eat pork? Why are you carrying so much stuff?"
Seeing that Brother Liu's posture was a bit funny, I couldn't help but laugh out loud: "Hey, just take some."
Brother Liu looked at his hands and finally remembered the chicken.
"You've finished killing the chicken, right? Where should I put it?"
"Oh dear, let's put it in the west wing."
He quickly put the wine bottle in the car and walked towards Brother Liu's direction, pointing to the west wing.
He tried to take the chicken, but Brother Liu dodged him.
"Don't get it on you, I'll let it pass for you."
Yes, I just went back inside and changed into a clean cotton-padded coat. Brother Liu is quite thoughtful.
Looking at his clean cotton-padded jacket, he thought of Aunt Liu again.
"Wait for me a little longer!"
He ran into the house while shouting.
