Chapter 147 Shooting
The base commander was surprised, his eyes widened, but in a moment he reacted and reached out to take the gun.
The shotgun was quite heavy, and he almost dropped it when he picked it up.
The people who had been fighting in front of them all stopped and stood there staring at the hunting rifle in the base commander's hand.
"You, you old man, don't lie to me! This is a toy gun!"
The bearded man was clearly frightened; he straightened up and began to stutter.
"Base commander, there's no need for you to do it yourself. I'll show them the power of this gun."
He then took the shotgun from the base commander, pointed it at the sky, and pulled the hammer with one hand and the trigger with the other.
"Bang!!"
The loud noise startled everyone, and even the birds in the surrounding trees took flight.
"Oh, well, excuse me."
When people are stressed, they tend to appear very busy.
The bearded man stammered out useless nonsense and started backing away.
He knew in his heart that if that bullet had been aimed at him, he would be dead by now.
I aimed the shotgun barrel at the hand gripping Brother Liu's hand: "Aren't you going to let go of this hand?"
Upon hearing this, the man quickly released his grip on Brother Liu's hand.
Slowly move the gun barrel and point it at the bearded man's forehead. The bearded man was so frightened that he dared not move.
"Whose coal mine is it?" I asked slowly.
"Bai, from Bai Town base, yours!"
The man with the thick beard stammered as he answered the question.
I didn't expect this guy to be such a coward, so I continued to ask, "Will you come again in the future?"
"I'm not coming anymore, I'm never coming again."
The bearded man's legs trembled; he was almost kneeling and kowtowing.
"Apologize, and see how you can appease our base commander. If the base commander is unhappy, I'll be ready to pull the trigger."
He lightly moved his index finger on the trigger, which startled the bearded man so much that he knelt down on the ground with a thud.
"Spare me, please spare me, big brother! I'll never dare to do it again. From now on, Baizhen Base will be my big brother!"
Seeing how scared he was, I took the opportunity to put away the gun. It was too heavy; my arm would ache if I lifted it for even a short while.
"Is there anything else you'd like to add, Commander?"
"Get out, get out."
The base commander waved his hand, and the thirty-odd burly men scrambled back into the car in a panic and drove away.
The twenty-odd residents outside the Baizhen base slowly stood up from the ground, their bodies more or less covered in paint.
They looked at me gratefully, and for a moment, the entire White Town base fell silent.
Brother Liu was pulled up by the arm by another person, his head down, blood dripping from his mouth.
"Come in quickly, those who are seriously injured should be taken to the examination room immediately."
Once the men had left, the base commander quickly directed the wounded to receive medical treatment.
Apart from the seriously injured, the rest of the people gathered at the entrance of the White Town base.
The base commander patted me on the shoulder first, his eyes a little moist: "You saved the lives of our entire base!"
"From now on, people will think we have guns, and no one will dare to mess with us anymore!"
The little tagalong beside the base commander was the first to react, cheering and shouting with joy.
"Thank you, young lady!"
"You saved us!"
A chorus of thanks erupted from everyone, and I was overwhelmed for a moment, even though I hadn't really done anything.
"No need to thank me. Many residents of Baizhen Base have treated me very well, and the base chief has been especially kind to me. This is what I should do... We are family."
To be honest, everyone, from the base commander to Brother Liu and his wife, has been very kind to me. The little thing I did is nothing to brag about.
"Everyone, you can all leave now."
The base commander dismissed everyone and led me to his office, saying he had something to say to me.
Upon arriving at the office, I sat face-to-face with the base commander on the sofa.
"We really owe you a lot today. If you hadn't happened to be here, the White Town base would probably have been looted."
The base commander personally poured me a cup of tea that had gone cold, and said this as he handed it to me.
"My initial intention after the apocalypse was simply to bring everyone together to live, support each other, and think that it would be easier to survive that way."
The base commander paused, took a sip of tea, and I listened silently without interrupting him.
"We never thought of competing with other bases for power and profit, so our combat capabilities are indeed a bit weak. Our mistake was trying to seize that coal mine, which brought this mess upon us."
"No, no, you want that coal to make the winter easier for the residents. What's wrong with that? The problem lies in this extreme cold, this plague, and those greedy people."
After hearing what I said, the base commander smiled and shook his head: "I'm getting old, and I'm not thinking things through as well as I am."
"Please don't say that."
I stood up and poured the base commander a cup of tea, hoping to comfort him in his low spirits.
After chatting with the base chief for a while, he directly stated that he wanted to go see Brother Liu. The base chief also got up and said that he needed to go to the clinic to take a look.
When I arrived at the consultation room, there were quite a few people there.
Looking around, I saw Aunt Liu crying in the corner. I walked quickly toward her and also saw Brother Liu lying on the bed.
Brother Liu's face was swollen, and his eyes were so swollen that he couldn't open them, but he was still comforting Sister Liu with his eyes closed: "Oh, don't cry, you're not dead, are you? Except for your face, the rest of your body doesn't hurt."
"When you rushed out to fight, you insisted on being at the very front. You think you're so brave? Did you even think about me? What would I do if you died from being a hero?"
While crying, Sister Liu shouted and blamed Brother Liu.
"Sister Liu, has Brother Liu applied the medicine?"
When Aunt Liu saw me approaching, she wiped away her tears.
"It's been applied; some traditional Chinese medicine has been used."
I often work on the mountain, and I inevitably get bumps and bruises. I always carry a small bottle of Yunnan Baiyao spray in my pocket, and I still have one now.
He stepped forward and stuffed the Yunnan Baiyao into Liu Sao's hand. Liu Sao looked down and saw that it was medicine, but without saying a word, she quickly put it in her pocket.
"The medicine has been applied. Lying here won't do any good. Let's go home."
Aunt Liu helped Brother Liu up, and I went over to help as well, and together we helped Brother Liu home.
After walking a few steps, I saw Taozi sitting on the hospital bed, his right arm was a little red and swollen. Before I could say anything, Aunt Liu called Taozi to come with her.
Upon arriving at Brother Liu's house, Sister-in-law Liu first had Taozi extend his arm, and then sprayed Yunnan Baiyao on the red and swollen area a few times.
"This is the medicine the girl brought. Spray some on too, it will help you recover faster."
Ever since Taozi confessed his feelings, our interactions have been somewhat awkward. Even though I'm worried about the injury on his arm, I'm too embarrassed to ask him about it.
Perhaps sensing my worry, Taozi spoke first: "It's nothing, just a minor injury, don't worry."
After saying that, he revealed a row of white teeth.
Sister Liu helped Brother Liu onto the kang (a heated brick bed) and carefully sprayed medicine on him little by little.
"I can't go, Taozi. Why don't you take the girl to the cattery that recently had kittens and ask if you can exchange two cats?"
After saying that, Taozi led me out of Aunt Liu's house.
The two remained silent on the way, until Taozi spoke first, saying softly, "Sis, you were amazing today."
