Chapter 181 Low Battery

Chapter 181 Low Battery

The extreme cold has just begun, and it's already so cold that we can't even go outside. We don't know how long this extreme cold will last or what the lowest temperature will be.

Let's take stock of the dried vegetables at home. We stocked up a lot this year, and if we eat them sparingly, they should last for one or two years.

There's no need to worry about meat. The whole pig and two ribs provided by the White Town base will last a long time, and the wolf pack also provides plenty of prey. If we run out of food, we can also kill our own pigs and rabbits.

There was more food than could be eaten.

You don't need to worry about food for a while.

The next morning marked the second day of the extreme cold, and it was time to prepare food for the family.

We have enough stockpiled goods, but we still need to prepare recycled food.

There are no stoves in the breeding rooms now, and it's quite cold inside, so we no longer grow vegetables in the breeding rooms.

Move the cat tree, floor table, and other space-consuming items from the east room into the animal shed.

The soft soil from digging the cave dwellings was brought home and used to fill each vegetable pot in turn. Chives, lettuce, cilantro, scallions and other leafy greens were planted in the pots and placed close together on the floor of the east room.

Except for a narrow path and some open space near the stove, the rest of the area was filled with vegetable platters.

The flower pots that were previously placed in the east room have now been moved to the open space in the kitchen.

They spent the whole day busy planting vegetables. In the evening, they relit the stove in the pigsty, added honeycomb briquettes to the stove and firebox at home, and then crawled into their warm quilts to sleep.

On the third day of extreme cold, the snow outside the window stopped falling and only stayed on the ground, but the wind was very strong.

I put on thick clothes, pushed open the windshield door, and a cold wind mixed with snow particles blew into the room. Even though I was dressed warmly, I couldn't help but shiver.

When the door opened, the dogs rushed out and rolled around in the snow.

It's as if they can't feel the sub-zero temperatures outside.

When Tie Dan saw the other dogs go out, he rushed out of the yard like a little rocket. After walking outside for only a few seconds, he shakily scurried back into the house.

I pressed my hat down with my hand, walked quickly to the pigpen, opened the door, and checked the temperature inside.

At 8 degrees Celsius, there was no ice formation indoors.

Sure enough, the stove stayed warm well when lit at night.

It was windy and the temperature was extremely low today, so we quickly lit the stove in the pigsty to keep the livestock warm.

Then he took firewood back to the house to light the stove and firebox.

After breakfast, fully equipped with tongs, we carefully stored the honeycomb briquettes in the back room.

It's too cold outside, so I'll store a lot at once so I don't have to go outside so often to light the stove.

After handling the coal for an hour, my hands and feet were sore from the cold, and my cheeks were numb. The heat inside the house was also dissipating because of the constant opening and closing of the doors.

The coal stored in the back room will last for a while, so let's stop here for today.

Lock the door to the west wing, close all the doors inside the room, and squat by the stove to warm yourself.

By this time, the dogs were already fast asleep by the stove.

They're not stupid. When it's cold, they go out to play, roll around a few times, and then sneak back inside to sleep in the warmth.

Once the pain in my hand subsided and I regained sensation, the lights in my house suddenly went out.

Upon inspection of the solar panels, it was discovered that after several consecutive cloudy days, the last bit of electricity stored in the solar panels had been used up.

The other batteries in the house still have power, and the diesel generator can also generate electricity, but we are reluctant to use them.

The solar panels aren't working properly; it looks like we'll have to conserve electricity from now on.

I glanced at the dimly lit room and turned to go to the kitchen.

They opened the two large freezers, took out all the contents, and transferred them to the shelves in the back room.

These two freezers are mostly filled with beef and pork, with a small amount of rabbit and chicken.

The meat was sorted and placed on the shelves, taking up a full eight large shelves.

Looking directly at the shelves, I suddenly realized how much meat I've stocked up on.

The beef needs to be eaten quickly; it's been frozen for a long time, and if it's left any longer, it might become harmful to your health.

After emptying the freezer, everything in the refrigerator was also taken out.

Frozen items were placed on the shelves in the back compartment, while fresh food was kept in the breeding room.

The most spacious place in the house now is the breeding room.

Moreover, the breeding sheds are not heated, but because some heat can be transferred from the kitchen and the east room, the temperature is kept just above zero.

A room with this temperature is perfect as a natural refrigerator's preservation layer.

After preparing all the food, take some warm water from the iron pot and wipe down the refrigerator and freezer, then leave the doors open to air dry.

Now that you've freed up the space, keep it clean and tidy to extend the lifespan of these appliances.

After a thorough inspection, there were no other large electrical appliances that consumed power. A small battery was then connected to the east room.

Having finally settled the electricity-related matters, I picked up the kettle from the stove and made myself a cup of hot tea.

Holding a cup of hot tea, I walked to my desk, turned on the dim lamp, sat down, and opened a brand new notebook.

The notebook cover reads "Second Extreme Cold Survival Record".

Turn to the first page and write the headline "Extreme Cold Survival Plan".

Before recording your living conditions, you should also make a daily life plan for yourself.

There are currently four life plans.

First, conserve electricity as much as possible during periods of extreme cold.

The only appliances that can be used at home are lights, washing machines, flashlights, mobile phone chargers, or electric blankets in special circumstances.

The second rule is to cycle at least 12 hours a week to store energy and improve physical fitness.

Thirdly, one should not overeat or waste food.

Food at home should be consumed in a planned way, and every time a bag of stored food is finished, it should be recorded.

Fourthly, one should maintain outdoor activities.

We can't stay cooped up at home all day like we did during the first extreme cold spell. We need to go out and do some outdoor activities, such as collecting frozen mushrooms and frozen crabapples.

It can not only improve physical health, but also invigorate the mind and body and enrich the spiritual world.

Fifth, cultivate the good habit of writing a diary.

After the extreme cold and apocalypse, living alone is a bit dull and boring. I will record any interesting events that happen in my life so that I can look back on them later and avoid forgetting them.

"Other rules are to be added..."

After writing these last seven words, the rules for living in extreme cold are considered complete.

I closed the notebook and placed it neatly in the center of the desk, then hugged Tie Dan'er, who had been sitting beside me, watching me write with curiosity.

"What, do you want to practice writing too?"

I gently rubbed Tie Dan's round head and sat on the sofa, holding it in my arms.

I was writing with my back to the stove, and now my back is quite warm. Leaning back on the sofa, my chest and back are all warm and cozy.

Tie Dan stared at me with his big, dark eyes, then suddenly pressed his little paw against my nose.

This guy's really got some nerve; he's even daring to use his little paws to attack now.
