Chapter 20 The Carpenter's Challenge

Chapter 20 The Carpenter's Challenge

Looking around, the prices after the discount are about the same as on Pinduoduo, but it's more suitable to buy large quantities of goods from Pinduoduo. Pinduoduo can deliver to the town, and the county town is too far from my home.

Pushing a huge shopping cart, I headed straight for the small appliances section: 3 hair dryers, 3 electric kettles, 1 electric cooker, 10 table lamps, 1 rice cooker, 10 electric blankets, 5 electric fans, 10 20-meter power strips, and 10 5-meter power strips.

Then I went to the general merchandise section, and there were 50 rolls of aluminum foil, 100 bundles of plastic bags, and brick-sized wet wipes for only 5 yuan for 50 packs.

10 sets of nail clippers and ear picks, 20 brushes, 20 raincoats, 5 umbrellas, 10 trash cans, 10 underwear storage boxes, 10 plastic storage boxes, and 5 vases.

I then strolled around the tool section. Seeing how effortlessly the older guy used the air gun and chainsaw, I decided to buy some too: two air guns, ten boxes of nails, three chainsaws, and one hundred sheets of sandpaper.

I bought two straw-woven futon cushions from the bedding section. They were quite expensive, only 50 yuan each after the discount, but the quality felt exceptionally good. I plan to put them next to the small kang table for drinking tea; it will definitely feel very nice.

Finally, I shamelessly went to the tableware section and bought a few high-quality cups as a reward for my hard work in life.

After the 20% discount, the total cost was 4500, which was about what I expected.

After loading the goods into the car with satisfaction, I drove home, stopping at pharmacies along the way to buy some medicine. This time, I also bought quick-acting heart medicine, frostbite ointment, and a large amount of alcohol.

I spent 3,000 yuan on medicine along the way.

After arriving home, I happily unloaded the car, put some storage boxes in the closet and on the table, and then forcibly stuffed the rest of the items into the basement.

To make some space in the basement, I took out some commonly used items that I hadn't brought up to the ground floor.

The kitchen is still empty because I haven't cooked much at home yet.

The kitchen utensils, previously stocked seasonings, and even the kitchen storage racks were not left outside.

I rummaged through the basement and took out several large bags of pots, pans, and dishes, which ended up looking very messy on the two kitchen cabinets.

Perhaps the kitchen is missing two shelves and a place to prepare food; you can't exactly chop vegetables and cook rice right next to the stove.

I put another box of commonly used medicines into the wardrobe.

I unpacked the battery and took one to the east bedroom, placing it under the table so I can connect it to a power strip during power outages.

The other battery was stored intact in the darkroom.

I plan to store all my important items in the darkroom, including electronic devices such as my mobile phone and the newly purchased drone telescope.

So the darkroom is missing a cabinet to store things, but it's already dark, we'll buy one next time we go to town.

I glanced at my balance and saw I had 66,000 yuan left, which was enough; I had plenty of money.

On June 17th, I got up and prepared to drive to the furniture market in town to buy some more furniture.

These past few days I've been carefully observing the missing furniture: two cabinets in the darkroom, three ladders, two shelves in the kitchen, a food preparation counter, a shoe cabinet at the entrance, and a tool storage box.

As soon as I entered the furniture store, the owner recognized me.

"You're here!" the shop owner greeted me warmly, thinking to myself that another big spender had arrived, but the things he bought were all too cheap.

I explained the furniture I needed to the shop owner one by one. Except for the tool storage box, I selected suitable furniture for all other items. The total cost was 1,900, and I still have 64,000 left.

Move the furniture home, wipe it down, and then place it in its proper place.

There is a shoe cabinet at the entrance, and a full-length mirror next to it.

The food preparation counter is entirely covered in stainless steel and is placed in the kitchen along with two storage racks.

The two cabinets in the darkroom were placed on the heated kang (a traditional Chinese bed-stove) and on the floor against the west wall.

The cabinet has double doors on top, inlaid with frosted glass, and eight drawers measuring 15 x 25 cm on the bottom.

I put all kinds of electronic products, telescopes, drones, etc. into the small cabinet on the kang (a heated brick bed).

Everything was done by noon.

After lunch and a short nap, I plan to try making something myself in the afternoon.

The first thing we need to do is to find tool storage boxes that we haven't been able to buy yet.

I connected the power strip to the yard and took out the necessary planks.

Recalling the chicken seller's methods, he began to gesture with the wooden board.

I had a general idea in mind: the bottom part would be shaped like a wooden box, with four wooden sticks extending upwards, and then a four-sided frame would be attached horizontally to hold the handles of the tools.

This way, the walls won't get dirty.

Although I feel this thing is a bit of a gimmick, it's not entirely useless. I just bought a chainsaw and an air gun and wanted to practice using them.

Even though I was mentally prepared, using a chainsaw for the first time still dealt a heavy blow to my heart.

The sound was deafening, and sawdust attacked my face from directly in front of me.

Although I'm scared, I'm also very safety-conscious. I can't imagine what would happen if this thing touched my hand.

As I used it more and more, I became more courageous. This thing is really efficient at sawing wood.

After sawing all the wood blocks, the next step is assembly.

Instead of hammering nails in as usual, I now have an air nail gun.

I only dared to actually start after following online tutorials for half a day.

The sound was just as loud as a chainsaw, and my heart skipped a beat with every strike.

But its efficiency is truly remarkable; with a gentle pull of the trigger, the nail is firmly driven into the wood.

In just two hours, I actually managed to make the toolbox I had imagined.

This greatly boosted my confidence, and I'm willing to call myself a shrewd carpenter.

This made me want to go and haul another load of planks tonight. I'll save them to slowly make things after the apocalypse.

Without saying goodbye to the old man, they drove their small truck directly to the furniture and timber factory that night.

The old man was dozing off in the small pavilion.

I gently knocked on the window, and he slowly woke up.

"Grandpa!" I said with a smile, handing over 50 yuan in cash.

"Go on, go on," the old man mumbled, taking the 50 yuan and going back to sleep.

I swung my arm and started loading the wooden planks. (The dimensions were all estimated visually.)

30 wooden boards per square meter, 30 wooden boards 30 centimeters wide and 1.5 meters high, and 20 wooden sticks 15 centimeters in diameter and 2 meters long.

Then I turned my attention to the small round tree stumps. I figured I could cut them into small pieces with a chainsaw and use them as heat insulation pads, covers, or decorations...

It can be DIY'd into all sorts of things, and has great value.

After moving 10 small round tree stumps, let's see what other fresh produce is left.

I'm a shameless thief now, but I won't take anything. After the apocalypse, when temperatures drop to -70 degrees Celsius and no one can leave their homes, these things will become ruins too.

Then I'd rather be a shameless thief and let them realize their due value.
