Chapter 211 Secretary
Mancang smiled and nodded. This kid seemed a bit shrewd.
The mother and daughter didn't say a word the whole way, quietly huddled in a corner.
Upon arriving at the Baizhen base, Brother Liu first drove the car to the base center, where Taozi led the mother and daughter to register.
Brother Liu drove me, Mancang, four rabbits, four dogs, and a cat all the way to his house.
As soon as I opened the car door, four dogs and a cat all jumped out, along with a child, which surprised Aunt Liu, who had been so welcoming, and made her smile freeze.
"Oh dear, you're here, but why did you bring... a child!"
I was amused by Aunt Liu's reaction: "Hahaha, I have a huge family now, quite a few people, right?"
"Come in quickly, come in quickly, little sister, I've missed you so much! I'll cook right away and make you lots of delicious food."
Aunt Liu warmly welcomed me into the house. Little Di and Little Gua also recognized Aunt Liu and jumped up and down, almost tripping her.
Aunt Liu stroked the little boy's head and asked, "What's this chubby-faced kid's name?"
"My name is Mancang."
Mancang is quite clever; he always speaks frankly and openly when faced with people who show him kindness.
"Mancang, call her Aunt Liu."
I taught Mancang how to call people.
"Hello Aunt Liu, Aunt Cheng said that you two are the closest. Aunt Liu is a very gentle person."
Mancang's voice was clear and crisp, and his speech was fluent and pleasant to hear.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. How could I have raised this child so well?
Seeing how eloquent Mancang was, Aunt Liu couldn't stop smiling: "Oh my, look how sweet his tongue is."
Aunt Liu's house is quite warm, but it's still much worse than my house. Wearing a cotton-padded coat inside is just right, neither too hot nor too cold.
After chatting for a while, Brother Liu returned from outside.
"Come on, girl, I'll take you to get some fresh vegetables."
Yes, I almost forgot about the important matter.
I left the cat and dog at Aunt Liu's house, and then I led Mancang and followed Brother Liu to the base center to find the base director.
We might go to the vegetable shed later, I want to show Mancang the world.
Upon arriving at the base center, Brother Liu went back to help Sister Liu cook.
I led Mancang up to the second floor, and there was that familiar door again.
I gently knocked on the door, and a familiar voice called out from inside, "Come in."
"Base Commander, did you miss me?"
I greeted the base commander warmly.
When the base commander looked up, his face was still expressionless. But when he recognized me, his eyes lit up and he smiled, "Oh, little girl, sit down!"
I sat down on the sofa and beckoned Mancang behind me to come over as well.
The base commander looked at the full warehouse, somewhat puzzled: "What's this?"
"My new recruit, isn't he quick-witted? His name is Mancang."
The base commander looked Mancang up and down, while Mancang, with a rather reckless attitude, held his head high and let the base commander look him over.
Perhaps because the base commander looked a bit serious, Mancang wasn't as relaxed as he was at Aunt Liu's house, and his little fists were clenched tightly.
The base commander nodded: "Hmm! Not bad! Looks clever, very shrewd."
I pulled Mancang to sit on the sofa and said to the base commander, "You bet this little guy has been working."
After a pause, I continued, "Didn't we set up a big vegetable greenhouse? Can I trade four live rabbits for some vegetables?"
The base commander waved his hand: "Go and take it yourself, take as much as you want."
He paused for a moment, then asked, "Besides the rabbit, wasn't there anything else I received separately?"
As if by magic, I pulled two jars of snacks from the large pocket of my cotton coat: one jar of amber hazelnuts and the other jar of sesame seed brittle.
Amber hazelnuts are made by coating hazelnuts with syrup, just like the amber peanuts I gave Brother Liu before, except that the hazelnuts are more fragrant and more precious.
Sesame and melon seed brittle is an upgraded version of the previous nut brittle, with a rich aroma of sesame and melon seeds.
These are the snacks that Mancang and I have been saving for several days. We couldn't bear to eat them, but since we're at the Baizhen base, we'll give them to the base elder to satisfy his craving.
With a fawning smile, he held up two jars of snacks in front of the base elder: "Try them, they're really delicious, I made them myself."
The base elder twisted open an amber hazelnut, threw one into his mouth, and crunched it loudly.
"Mmm! Delicious, it smells so good!"
Seeing that he was satisfied, I was relieved. Luckily, I had made preparations in advance. This old man would feel uncomfortable if he received any benefits.
"This rabbit?"
I pointed to the rabbit at the door and asked the base chief what to do with it.
The base elder, still chewing on a hazelnut, mumbled, "Give it to my secretary and let him handle it."
secretary?
I'm a little confused; I've never heard of secretaries before.
Seeing me frown, the base elder shouted outside, "Secretary! Come in!"
Then I saw Taozi's familiar figure flash to the door.
"Ah? You're talking in such a sophisticated way, so you're Taozi!"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. How come there are only two people inside and outside?
Finally, a new character appeared, but it turned out to be Taozi again.
The base elder curled his lip arrogantly: "You don't understand, I have excellent taste..."
Taozi, carrying the rabbit, led Mancang and me towards the back of the base.
From a distance, you can see several long, narrow greenhouses covered with fabrics of various colors, which are probably collected cotton quilts.
We went to the nearest greenhouse first. The smell inside wasn't very pleasant, but the temperature was nice.
There are quite a few pigs, chickens, ducks and rabbits raised inside; this is a breeding shed.
Taozi handed the four rabbits to the staff on duty in the shed, and then led the two of us to the next shed.
"Sister, does this scene look familiar? The first time we met, I was the one who showed you the greenhouse."
Taozi walked to my right, as if reminiscing about the past.
Looking at Taozi from this angle, it really does seem that way.
The first time I visited the greenhouse, he seemed to be walking to my right, a head taller than me, and I was looking up at him as he spoke.
Thinking about this, I sighed, "Yes, things have changed. You've grown into a man."
Taozi chuckled for no apparent reason and said, "Yeah, it's time to get married!"
Okay, I knew he was up to no good.
I shouldn't have fallen for his trick and reminisced about the past with him.
Seeing that I ignored him, Taozi wasn't angry. We arrived at the entrance of the vegetable shed just then.
Leading Little Radish Head Mancang into the vegetable shed, Taozi followed behind and carefully closed the door.
There are three vegetable greenhouses in total. We went into the first one. It was warm and humid as soon as we entered.
The smell is refreshing. Taking a deep breath, I'm filled with the fragrance of earth and plants. It smells so good, unlike the unpleasant smell of the breeding shed just now.
Seeing me take a deep breath in rapture, Taozi asked with a complicated expression, "Sis, guess what kind of manure is on this dish?"
"Cough cough cough!"
His words made the fresh air seem to take a turn in my lungs, choking me quite a bit.
