Chapter 255 New Neighbors
As I was saying this, I insisted on giving the cloth bag to the old lady, and she accepted it.
The two delicate breads looked strangely large in the old lady's hands.
She lowered her head slightly and handed a piece of bread to her grandson.
"Take this and eat it. Try this bread and see what it tastes like. Don't you often ask me that before?"
The little boy took the bread and gently pinched one corner of the packaging, afraid of damaging the bread inside.
The old lady thanked me, then took her grandson's hand and turned to walk back the way they came.
It took so long; I guess he walked home to get the walnuts and then came back.
Watching their retreating figures, the little grandson seemed to have unwrapped a loaf of bread and taken a small bite.
Then the little boy handed the old woman the bread with a chip in it...
"You've really come to visit. Let's go home for dinner, girl."
Aunt Liu said with a smile, helping me move the things onto the donkey cart.
I stood up and patted Little Corn's bottom: "Let's go, time to get to work!"
As the sun set, the crowd dispersed, and the market became deserted. I followed Aunt Liu home.
The donkey cart stopped at the door. I took the bottle of soy sauce out of the basket and followed Aunt Liu into the house.
"I saved a bottle for you."
As I spoke, I placed the soy sauce on the stove.
Aunt Liu turned around and was startled when she saw the soy sauce: "Oh my god! I was wondering why I didn't see you selling two bottles of soy sauce. Take it back! I don't want it."
"Just take it. I made a small jar of it. This little bit is nothing. You can just dip dumplings in soy sauce or something."
I'm so fed up with how every time I try to give Aunt Liu something, she has to push and shove me around.
After several rounds of back and forth, Aunt Liu finally accepted it.
They happily prepared to make dumplings for lunch.
Aunt Liu was chopping filling at home, and I took the last loaf of bread to Taozi's house to find Tuantuan.
Taozi's house was locked, so it seems that Tuantuan went out with Taozi.
As soon as I reached the center of the base, I saw Tuan Tuan's small figure, squatting alone on the ground, playing with something.
What are you looking at?
I walked over to Tuantuan and squatted down with her to ask her.
"I'm watching the little ants; I'm helping them find food."
After I finished speaking, Tuantuan looked up and saw me, her eyes instantly filled with surprise.
"Aunt Cheng! You've come to see me!"
She quickly stood up and started jumping around, grabbing my clothes.
Then he shouted towards the center of the base, "Uncle Tao, Aunt Cheng is here to see me!"
"Alright, alright, stop shouting. Your food and the little ants' food are here."
I took out a piece of bread and handed it to Tuantuan.
Tuantuan looked at the bread that was bigger than her face and her eyes crinkled into crescent moons with laughter.
"Eat!"
With my permission, Tuantuan tore open the packaging, took a deep breath, and exclaimed, "Ah! It smells so good!"
After playing with Tuantuan for a while, we turned around and went back to Aunt Liu's house for dinner.
Hurry up and eat your meal before going home, otherwise it'll be dark later.
Buckwheat dumplings with pure pork filling taste like home.
After the meal, they didn't linger. They harnessed Little Corn to the donkey cart and drove home.
By the time I got home, it was completely dark. I carried all the things I had received into the kitchen.
After feeding the little corn and the other livestock, I carefully admired the supplies I had received in exchange.
Great stuff! All great stuff!
After happily summarizing everything, I ate some beef jerky with some black tea before finally going to sleep contentedly.
The next day.
As I was getting ready to head to the vegetable garden in the morning, I suddenly remembered that house in the distance.
Since they cleaned the house that winter, there has been no further activity for the next two years.
I don't know if they'll move here this year.
So I brought my binoculars.
Standing on the hilltop and looking over there, I could vaguely see several figures turning over the land on either side of the yard.
It looks like they're growing vegetables.
It's been two years, are we finally moving in?
I had a feeling of both dislike and anticipation.
I've been worried about them moving in, so I've been anxious about it. I might as well move in as soon as possible so I won't have to worry about it anymore.
It seems to be a cloudy day today. I've planted several plots of land, but the sun hasn't reached me at all.
I decided to climb up to the platform I had been on before and take a closer look.
Standing here, you can see the entire courtyard.
I observed these people carefully. There seemed to be three strong young men, one slightly older man, and a tiny little kid squatting on the ground.
The little one looks so familiar in that bright yellow outfit.
It looks a lot like... the one I made for Tuantuan.
I was somewhat incredulous, so I moved the binoculars towards the other people.
There was no Taozi or Brother Liu inside, but... the one repairing the courtyard wall looked a lot like Brother Liu.
Could it be that the people from the White Town base are moving here?
I'm going to go and find out what's going on.
There was no need to harness a donkey cart; they simply rode Little Corn, with four dogs following behind, towards that courtyard.
When I was almost at the door, I got off the donkey cart.
Using a blind spot, Little Corn and I hid under a big willow tree.
The voices of the workers came from inside.
"The land here is really fertile, it hasn't been planted for many years, but there are too many weeds. I wonder how many weeds will sprout up after the first crop!"
An unfamiliar voice came out, and you could feel him digging hard in the ground.
"I'll be fine after living here for two years. This area is quiet and there's plenty of land. It will definitely be comfortable to live here."
When I heard Brother Liu's voice, I was certain that it was someone from the Baizhen base.
Touching the small pistol tucked into my waistband, I walked out from behind the willow tree with an air of nonchalance.
"Brother Liu!"
I greeted Brother Liu directly, which startled him.
"Oh my god, it's you, girl. We're all men here, so it's a bit of a shock to hear a woman's voice all of a sudden."
I smiled sheepishly and apologized, "Oh dear, I'm so sorry I scared you, bro."
Brother Liu waved his hand: "It's nothing, it's nothing. What brings you here?"
I answered truthfully: "I saw some commotion at home, so I came to check if it was people from the Baizhen base."
"Yeah, yeah, didn't Taozi tell you?"
I was completely confused. What could Taozi possibly have to say to me?
I shook my head, and Brother Liu kept me in suspense: "Well, it's not convenient for me, an outsider, to say. You can ask him when you have time."
I sorted out my thoughts a little. Could it be that Taozi is going to live in this house?
"Who is this house for? Is it for Taozi?"
When I said that, Brother Liu's eyes darted around: "Oh dear, how am I supposed to explain this!"
"If you don't deny it, then I'll take it as if I'm right."
As expected, Brother Liu did not deny it. It seems that my new neighbor is actually Taozi.
"With the White Town base so busy, how does he find time to stay at my place?"
"Oh dear, you don't know this. Taozi has implemented a new policy. After a while, everyone will disperse, which means expanding the scale of the Baizhen base."
After hearing what Brother Liu said, I nodded in understanding.
Not only did I learn that the Baizhen base was going to be expanded, but I also confirmed that Taozi was going to live near me.
