Chapter 32 The True Arrival of the Extreme Cold Apocalypse
Before I could even properly admire my house, snowflakes began to fall from the sky.
The temperature suddenly dropped drastically, from minus seven or eight degrees Celsius to minus 30 degrees Celsius.
On July 19th, in a sense, the extreme cold and apocalypse truly arrived.
I was afraid my stockpiled goods would be wasted, and I had hoped for an extreme cold and an apocalypse, but when the apocalypse actually came, I was mostly filled with fear.
The current room temperature is 21 degrees Celsius, and the indoor temperature has not been significantly affected by the outdoor temperature drop.
This made me feel a little more at ease.
I couldn't help but take a closer look at my house, wanting to see what kind of results I had achieved after more than two months of hard work.
There were nearly 300 sacks of firewood piled up in the yard, completely covered with plastic sheeting.
The three large side rooms on the west side were each filled with 50 tons of honeycomb briquettes, various tools and furniture, feed, nutrient soil and fertilizer.
The threshing ground on the east side contains 25 tons of coal, which leads directly to the back door of the house.
The windshield was piled high with sacks of firewood. Pushing open the front door, tool racks and shoe racks were placed on either side of the entrance hall.
The wall was covered with long strings of chili peppers and green beans.
There were three large wardrobes on the heated kang in the east room, filled with everyday clothes and bedding.
The wardrobe, converted into an eight-compartment unit, contains commonly used sewing kits, first-aid kits, and various teas and snacks.
Next to the wardrobe on the heated kang bed is my bed. Next to the bed are three large boxes. Two of them contain chicks, and one contains two small yellow dogs that are rooting around everywhere.
In the rest of the area, dried eggplants are being dried.
At the far east end of the floor is a writing desk, and at the far west end is an orange sofa and coffee table. Directly opposite the sofa is a fireplace.
The other open spaces are filled with square vegetable pots filled with soil, but no planting has started yet.
The first room on the west side is the breeding room. It is divided into two parts by a fence. The part near the window is the chicken coop and fermentation bed. The chicks are too small to be put in yet.
On the other side was a square vegetable basin filled with soil.
The sunny side of the second room is the small west wing, which contains a stationary bike generator and two batteries.
In the middle, against the wall, are two rows of large bookshelves, filled with many books and various kinds of wine.
The rest of the space was piled with potatoes, sweet potatoes, green onions, and radishes.
To the right is a wall of large wardrobes, with two wardrobes on the left and right containing various commonly used tools and frequently consumed, long-lasting ingredients.
The wardrobe door in the middle can be pushed open, revealing a dark room inside.
The darkroom contained a small heated kang (a traditional Chinese bed-stove), and the cabinets on the kang held electronic products, drones, and telescopes.
There is an enormous battery on the ground.
Next to the battery is a hidden wooden board; lifting the board reveals the basement.
Press the switch next to the wooden board, and the basement lights will turn on one by one.
The basement is quite large, even larger than the house above.
A considerable amount of supplies were stored in the basement.
Large quantities of rice, flour, cooking oil, medicine, tools, cotton-padded clothes, quilts, and cotton-padded coats.
Back in the kitchen, there were two stoves.
The stove on the west side was piled high with potatoes and sweet potatoes.
There are two large water tanks in the middle, and the water pipes are directly connected to the well outside.
There is a door in the middle of the north wall, and to the right of the door are two rows of large freezers, which contain 300 kilograms of beef and 20 farm chickens.
To the left of the door is the kitchen countertop, with two large storage cabinets on either side of it.
Appliances and kitchenware were placed on one side, and various ingredients were placed on the other side.
There are two large cabinets against the east wall, filled with various tableware.
Go out through the back door. There's a rear wing that's 5 meters wide and as long as the house, with a roof on top.
The westernmost part of the back room was filled with honeycomb briquettes, while the middle and eastern sides contained a total of 10 large cabinets and 15 storage boxes.
It contained the meat of three large, fat pigs, as well as various frozen meats, frozen vegetables, and frozen meatballs.
This is the complete picture of the housing structure and the stockpiled supplies. If we disregard shelf life, this food could last for 50 years.
After checking all the rooms and supplies, I felt much more at ease. Perhaps I really could survive the extreme cold and apocalypse.
I went to the small west room and got two sweet potatoes, then threw them under the stove to roast slowly.
I snuggled into the sofa with a small blanket, feeling all warm and cozy.
I finally mustered the courage to open Weibo on my phone and prepare to see what the outside world looks like.
Unsurprisingly, people were buzzing with discussion about the sudden snowfall and sharp drop in temperature.
Some experts are explaining why it snowed in July.
Some netizens from the south complained bitterly, saying they were freezing to death, while a small number posted pictures of themselves enjoying delicious food by the fire in their rural hometowns in the north.
But most people were shivering with cold, expressing their fear and shouting that the end of the world was coming.
Some people also used this as a meme, saying that someone had wronged Dou E, and that they should hurry up and clear his name so that it would stop snowing.
Just as I was engrossed in reading, a message popped up on my phone.
It was my ex-boyfriend who cheated on me.
After I found out he had broken up with his girlfriend, I confronted him about why he cheated on me.
But he said my hysterical state looked terrible, and that I deserved to be left alone after my parents died.
Sure enough, when he loves you, he will cherish your weaknesses; when he doesn't love you, those weaknesses will become a dagger to attack you.
"Chengcheng, where are you? I miss you so much~"
His message came like this, and after reading it, I shuddered with disgust.
"?" I slowly typed out a question mark, wondering what he was up to.
"I miss you so much right now. Can I come to your house to see you?"
I'm puzzled. What could have happened to make a complete scumbag come looking for his ex-girlfriend in -20 degree weather?
So I asked, "Is there something you need?"
"Nothing's wrong, I just missed you." He was still being insincere.
"Get to the point." I can't stand his pretense; I just want to know his real purpose.
The other person clearly thought about it for a while, probably thinking that I used to be the one who couldn't bear to see him suffer, and that I would feel very sorry for him whenever he suffered.
"Chengcheng, there's no food at home. I'm starving and cold, and I feel like I'm about to die. Please save me," he finally told the truth.
"If there's no food, go to the supermarket; if it's cold, turn on the air conditioning. What's the use of telling me this?" I want to see just how shameless he can be.
"The supermarket is completely sold out, and our community is without power, so we can't turn on the air conditioner at all."
Seeing how miserable he was, I felt relieved and stopped replying to his messages.
How could the supermarket's goods be sold out so quickly?
Just a few days ago, the news was reporting that everyone should not panic and that supplies would be distributed one by one.
Did this scumbag hear something and want to take over my house and seize my belongings?
This is the post-apocalyptic hut I painstakingly built, and I wouldn't give it to him even if it cost me my life.
