Chapter 4 Buying a Car and Furniture

Chapter 4 Buying a Car and Furniture

Before it got dark, I quickly hailed a taxi and arrived in town, intending to take care of two things.

First, I bought a small truck; second, I bought furniture, mainly sofas.

I don't plan to have anyone deliver the supplies I've stockpiled directly to my door.

So I bought a small truck to make it easier for me to transport supplies. I don't need to take a taxi to and from town anymore, and it's much more convenient to drive myself.

This house has been uninhabited for a long time, and the heated kang (a traditional brick bed) has been in use for who knows how many years. I'm worried that it might collapse or start smoking when it's lit.

So I'm going to tear down the kang (heated brick bed) and rebuild it.

I have nowhere to stay during this period, so I bought a sofa in advance so I can sleep on it at night.

A sofa will indeed be necessary for daily life in the future, so I can sit on it, drink tea, and read a book when I want to relax.

The town wasn't very prosperous, but it wasn't particularly desolate either.

The entire street is a long street running from west to east, with all kinds of shops on both sides.

There are snack shops selling spicy hot pot, hot pot, barbecue rice noodles, and other snacks, as well as clothing stores that look quite simple.

From a distance, you can see a large shop, three stories high, which is the only furniture store in the town.

When I walked in, the owner was sitting on a sofa scrolling through his phone.

The short video's external speaker is playing a rambling, unintelligible audio commentary on an unknown film.

The owner turned off his phone as soon as I came in and said very warmly, "What would you like to order?"

I looked around and replied, "I need a sofa."

The shopkeeper's eyes lit up as soon as he heard I needed to buy a sofa.

"Come on, let me show you around. This whole area is full of sofas. See what style and size you need."

Although it's the only furniture store in town, it has a wide variety of sofa styles, though most of them are rather old-fashioned.

I looked around carefully and suddenly took a liking to a large three-seater sofa at the back.

The sofa is orange and covered with leather.

The sofa doesn't have thin legs; instead, it has a solid base that makes it look very stable.

The shop owner, quick to notice, immediately smiled and introduced, "You have excellent taste! This sofa is top-quality; it's made of premium cowhide, soft yet durable, and of top-notch quality."

I struggled to walk through the narrow gaps between the sofas.

I reached out and touched it; it felt delicate and had a warm touch. It was indeed quite nice.

Of course, this ignores the fact that your hands are covered in dust.

I tried sitting on it. The sofa was very thick, and the cotton inside seemed to be about to burst out. The elasticity was just right, and it was very comfortable.

I stood up, brushing the dust off my backside as I listened to the boss's introduction.

"The springs inside this sofa are specially treated so they won't deform even after ten or eight years. Plus, the color is dirt-resistant and versatile, making it both beautiful and practical for your home."

I thought this sofa was just what I wanted, and I didn't want to look at any other ones, so I asked the owner about the price.

The boss held up an 8 with his hand, "8000." I frowned; 8000 was too expensive.

Seeing me frown, the shopkeeper immediately added, "This is pure leather!"

Those cheap ones that cost three or four thousand can't compare to this. You can find cheaper ones, but they're definitely not as good as this. You can use this for ten or twenty years; it's such a great value.

I suddenly realized the key point in the sentence: ten or twenty years.

I really need to buy a sofa that I can use for a long time, since I don't know how many years I'll need it.

"Would 6800 be okay?" I asked tentatively.

The boss waved his hand, "Take it!"

Oh no, I cut too little. I should have asked for the 6500.

As I felt remorse, I looked at the other furniture in the furniture store.

I need a lot of furniture, and you can't buy furniture online because you can't see the actual quality.

I don't have much time, and returning the item is too much trouble.

Since I'm already here, and the owner seems nice, I'm going to buy all the furniture I need.

I have already compiled a list of the furniture I need.

Buy double the quantity of furniture that is prone to wear and tear. If the apocalypse lasts for many years, replace any broken pieces with new ones.

Don't buy any impractical furniture, and try to save space in your home.

It took almost two hours to finally select all the furniture on the list.

Two coffee tables next to the sofa cost 1000 each; three wardrobes on the kang (heated brick bed) in the east room cost 3000 each; two kang tables cost 500 each; and six chairs cost 600 each.

A writing desk with drawers costs 1500; two large kitchen cabinets cost 2000; two full-length mirrors cost 200; five ladders cost 500; two large bookshelves cost 2000.

My only criterion for choosing furniture is that it is sturdy and durable. I believe that the furniture I choose can be used for a long time.

I only bought two large freezers as appliances.

The power will be cut off soon after the apocalypse, and I'm worried about not having enough money, so I'll hold off on buying appliances for now.

We'll decide whether to buy it later based on the money we have left.

The large freezers are used to pre-freeze meat and will only be used within two months before the end of the world. The two large freezers cost 3,000.

Then I remembered that I would need shelves and storage boxes to store all the goods I would have in the future, so I ordered 30 extra-large plastic storage boxes with lids for 800 each and 20 shelves for 2000 each.

The boss's mouth was stretched from ear to ear.

It's rare for a family in a small town to buy so much furniture at once.

He grinned as he calculated the bill for me, totaling 22,700.

I really didn't expect that buying so much furniture would only cost me a little over 20,000 yuan.

The town must have its own independent monetary system, so how can it be so cheap?

I paid the full amount for the sofa and also gave the owner an extra 5,000 yuan deposit.

I'll ask him to deliver the furniture (excluding the sofa) to my home in a while, and I'll contact him over the phone to find out when.

Then I went to the only used car dealership in town to buy a small truck.

It was already getting dark. After studying it for 20 minutes, I decided on a medium-sized truck and negotiated it down to 7,000 yuan.

After quickly completing the formalities, I drove my small truck home with my sofa inside.

As night fell, I drove my rattling pickup truck along the country roads.

Despite being physically exhausted, I forced myself to stay alert and silently encouraged myself.

This is just the beginning. If you want a stable life ahead, these two months won't be easy. You have to grit your teeth and persevere.

After encouraging myself, I hummed an unknown tune softly, and my mood gradually relaxed.

At 7:30 p.m., I finally got home and struggled to push the sofa into the master bedroom bit by bit.

After a quick wipe, without thinking about anything else, I lay down on it, covered myself with my little jacket, and fell fast asleep.
