Chapter 87 Seeking a Dog
Occasionally, the two wolf cubs, Xiaotu and Xiaodou, would come back and play with the four puppies.
I can't tell who's the wolf and who's the dog at all; they all look pretty much the same to me.
Every time Sang Biao brings his puppies back, I feel like he's back to freeload.
Whether it's rice mixed with vegetable soup or noodles mixed with eggs, they can slurp down a whole bowl of it.
It feels like a married daughter bringing her child back to her parents' home to beg for money.
I felt so sorry for them that I wanted to keep them all, but I didn't want to destroy their ability to survive.
I caught 20 big fish in 5 days.
Five of them were processed and then placed directly into the empty space in the freezer to freeze.
After processing the remaining 15 fish, they were all smoked into dried fish using the same method as the previously smoked pork.
The dried fish after smoking is hard to the touch, but still very elastic, and you can feel the oil in the flesh inside.
Simply hang all the dried fish in the room, and when you want to eat them, take them down and steam, boil, or stir-fry them—they'll all be delicious.
While the fish was being smoked, the dogs would run around the smoking room, their mouths watering.
When they got tired of running, they would all lie down outside and watch longingly.
I couldn't stand their pathetic state, so I cut the two smoked fish into nine pieces, and the dog (wolf) got a large piece of dried smoked fish.
Then they all huddled together in the yard, nibbling and chewing on each other with their paws, their little mouths smacking with delight.
I shook my head helplessly, picked up my bucket, and went fishing again.
I think I should stock up on more fish; I really can't afford to feed these wolves and dogs anymore.
I spent the whole afternoon intently fishing and caught three big fish and four small fish.
After returning home and dissecting the stomach, they immediately began to smoke it again.
The smoked fish tasted great this time, mainly because there were pine branches burning underneath, giving the meat a subtle pine resin aroma.
Right after the apocalyptic cold ended, the smoke used for fumigation was just wood blocks soaked in water, and it didn't taste as good as it does now.
After a busy day, I finally finished all the chores.
Take a hot shower, then change into loose long-sleeved shirts and trousers; you'll feel completely relaxed.
I took out my phone and fiddled with it, trying to see if there was a signal.
I haven't contacted Sumi in a long time, and I want to see how she is doing.
Unfortunately, the phone still had no signal, and I couldn't get any information from the outside world.
It seems that if we want to get any information in the future, we'll have to ask the people at the White Town base.
We drank coffee and milk tea sparingly, and there's still a lot left.
I made myself a big cup of milk tea and put two packets of expired spicy strips on the kang table.
Sitting on the warm kang (heated brick bed), I drink milk tea, eat snacks, and start watching TV series.
I recently started watching a period fantasy drama, and the female lead is so incredibly saintly that it makes my teeth itch.
Because I was too tired the previous few days, I stayed in bed for a long time the next morning.
I only got up when my stomach was really growling.
As I sat up with my hair all messed up, wondering what to have for breakfast, the familiar whirring of a tricycle came again.
"Goodness, even living alone in the apocalypse won't bring peace."
I shook my head helplessly, put on my clothes, then put the stun gun in my pocket and went out.
As soon as I stepped outside, I saw Xiao Gua and Sang Biao baring their teeth and howling at the door.
The gate wasn't even open yet, and they were already rushing up to bite someone.
The four puppies seemed more relaxed, completely unaware of what was happening, and simply sat there watching with their heads tilted to the side.
I peeked through the crack in the door to check if those people were outside.
Sure enough, it was them. It was the same guy who delivered the message last time, along with his nephew from the greenhouse. I heard someone call him Taozi last time.
The other two people were different: the male owner of the pig farm and the burly man they met at the trade fair.
One should always be wary of others. I gripped the stun gun in my pocket and opened the gate.
Instead of letting them in, I chose to leave.
Xiao Gua and Sang Biao also came out with me.
The male owner and the big man had obviously seen them before, and they didn't seem very surprised, but they still took a big step back.
The young boy and the man who had spoken to me last time were both taken aback.
They hadn't seen Sang Biao since he wasn't there last time.
Most people would be scared if a large, fat wolf suddenly appeared in front of them.
"Is there something you need?"
The male owner of the pig farm also came today, and we've always had a good relationship, so I felt embarrassed to show the same impatient attitude I had last time.
"Hey...girl, we're just asking, do you have a lot of dogs at home?"
This time, the man being negotiated with wasn't the same one as last time; it was the male owner of the pig farm.
I guess they knew the male homeowner and I had some connection, which is why they sent him to come and discuss it.
Oh, so you wanted puppies. But I'm a little confused, is the shelter short of dogs?
"dog?"
I gently repeated "dog," and before I could say anything else, the pig owner continued.
"Hey girl, a few of us raise pigs, and we have to send someone to keep watch every night in case someone steals them."
I nodded to signal him to continue.
"Several families want to raise a dog. The shelter has two male dogs, but no female dogs. There's no way to get a puppy."
"There wasn't a single dog for sale at the exchange market that day. I suddenly remembered that you brought a dog with you last time, so we came over to see if you had any spare dogs that we could exchange for one."
I understood immediately; they wanted to get a dog to guard the house.
I thought the farm owner needed something from me, but it turned out the male owner of the pig farm needed to keep a dog.
It seems that the man who came to deliver the message last time and this young boy were accompanying the male owner of the pig farm.
“I do have puppies here, but they are living a good life with me, free and well-fed all day long. I don’t want them to suffer elsewhere.”
I won't hide it, we do have a dog at home, but I really can't bear to part with it.
"See if you can switch with us. You won't suffer with us. We raise pigs and occasionally slaughter them for meat. Your dog will definitely have a good diet."
When the male owner heard that I did indeed have a dog, he saw a glimmer of hope and began to persuade me.
Seeing my hesitation, the pig farmer continued, "We brought some things with us. Take a look and see if you want to exchange them. Feel free to tell us what you need."
I silently weighed the pros and cons in my mind.
I had worried about this before. With so many dogs at home, and Xiao Gua having puppies in the future, and the four dogs also having puppies, I might not be able to afford to raise such a large group of dogs.
What's more, there's also Sang Biao bringing his two kids back to freeload.
Even if we could afford to raise them, we couldn't guarantee they'd have meat at every meal back then.
But if we give them the dog, I don't know if they will treat it well.
I absolutely disagree with the idea of being tied down and confined to a small, isolated space for one's entire life.
The more he thought about it, the more conflicted he became, glancing at the crowd.
However, considering they drove for so long, not afraid of wasting gas to come and exchange for dogs, and even brought some supplies, they probably won't be treated unfairly if they really get the dogs back.
