Chapter 94 Another Trip to Baizhen Base
The pregnant female wolf was smaller than Sang Biao, and it was spacious and comfortable for her to lie down on.
I found two unused dog bowls, filled one with water, and left the other empty for now.
Starting tomorrow, feed the mother wolf a separate portion of her food at each meal.
I'm a little confused because I once read a book about wolves.
The text states that only the alpha wolf and queen can reproduce in a wolf pack. So why are there other wolves besides Sang Biao pregnant?
This female wolf looked noticeably thinner than the other wolves, and I guessed she had been driven out by the other packs.
It was either out of kindness that Sang Biao or the Wolf King took it into their pack.
And because the rules of the wolf pack only allow the wolves to reproduce, the female wolf was placed with me to give birth.
That's how it is. I have my own doubts about my guess, but I really can't think of any other reason.
It can't be that the wolf king cheated on his wife and kept her with me as his mistress, can it?
It's said that wolves are monogamous, so it doesn't seem like they're cheating.
While my mind was wandering, I used the sewing machine to sew two more larger cotton pads.
We've already used up all the waterproof pads at home. When the mother wolf gives birth and the pad under her gets too wet, I'll replace it with the new cotton pad I made.
Winter has officially arrived, and it's getting cold outside, but not as cold as during the extreme cold.
It feels like winter temperatures have returned to normal; it's really no longer an extremely cold period.
The incident of a robber breaking into my home has left me with a significant psychological scar.
If I were to go through that again, I might not be lucky enough to survive.
So there's no way I can wait until next spring to reinforce the wall; I plan to start preparing in the next few days.
However, building a wall for the courtyard by oneself in winter is not as convenient as building a pigsty in autumn.
The weather is cold, and if we build slowly, the cement will freeze. Also, the courtyard wall is high and difficult to climb, so it's really hard to do without anyone's cooperation.
I'm planning to ask Taozi and the pig farmer for help.
Now that Xiaodi and Xiaogua's injuries have almost healed, they are preparing to go to the Baizhen base to ask for reinforcements.
The night before I left, I steamed two pots of white flour buns, cooked a big pot of braised pork, and also made a spicy and crunchy pickled radish and cucumber salad.
Given Taozi and the male homeowner's character, they will definitely come to help.
I need to prepare some of the meals I'll need while working in advance, so I won't be caught off guard.
In rural eastern Inner Mongolia, it is customary to provide a hearty meal for anyone who comes to help with chores.
Tomorrow I'll stir-fry some greens and make a soup; three dishes and a soup will be enough.
Before leaving home in the morning, I make sure to get everything in order at home.
Fill up all the food for the chickens, pigs, and dogs.
The door to the breeding shed must be kept tightly closed. I am not yet familiar with the mother wolf's temperament, so I dare not leave her alone with the dogs.
After filling the car with gas and taking an extra bucket of oil, I filled the salt jar with several bags of salt, and also took two boxes of eggs and a bag of rice before driving to the Baizhen base.
Rice is not grown in most of eastern Inner Mongolia, so it must be a rare commodity now. We'll bring some over and see if we can use it as wages.
Actually, it's not far, but I haven't been out for so long that I'm always terrified when I drive out.
After driving for only thirty or forty minutes, we arrived at the entrance of the Baizhen base.
There were three burly men patrolling at the entrance of the base. When they saw me park my car there, all three of them came over.
What are you doing?
The burly man's voice was steady and loud, and his shout startled me.
"I'm looking for the families who raise pigs; I'm their friend."
I got out of the car and spoke to them politely, face to face.
"Wait a moment, I'll go ask."
A burly man next to me heard what I said and didn't make things difficult for me. He simply jogged back into the base.
Seven or eight minutes later, a man came out with the burly man.
I recognize this man; he was one of the pig vendors at the market last time.
This man clearly recognized me. He exchanged a few words with the burly man and then walked towards me.
"You're here to see Old Liu, right? Come on, come inside with me."
The burly patrolman looked at my truck bed, inside the truck, and under the truck. Seeing that no one else was there, he opened the gate.
I drove the truck into the Baizhen base.
I parked the car in the same yard as last time, but I didn't see the male owner who raised pigs.
Oh, by the way, that man was called Old Liu, the male owner of the pig farm. I'll call him Brother Liu from now on.
"It's Old Liu's turn to clean today. Wait a moment, they'll be back soon."
After saying that, the man turned around and went home to attend to his own business.
Less than 10 minutes later, Brother Liu and his wife returned.
The two were chatting and laughing when they looked up and saw me, and they both came up to me warmly.
"Hey girl, what brings you here?"
Aunt Liu spoke first, coming up and taking my arm.
"Sister Liu, I would like to ask Brother Liu for a favor."
After all, I am also a woman. Since Aunt Liu is here, it would be more polite to inform the hostess first.
"What can I do to help you? Have you run into some trouble? Come on, let's go inside and talk."
As soon as Aunt Liu heard that I needed help, she grabbed my arm and pulled me into the house.
“A few days ago, my house was burgled. They broke into the yard. I didn’t expect them to have a knife, so I opened the door.”
"Oh my, you're really brave, girl! Why did you open the door? Are you hurt?"
Upon hearing this, Aunt Liu was startled and quickly asked if I was injured.
"I wasn't seriously injured. I know the wolves in the mountains, and they saved me. It's just... my dog almost died protecting me. It's all my fault for being careless."
At this point, my nose tingled, and tears streamed down my face again.
I thought I was strong enough, but as soon as someone showed me concern, feelings of self-blame and guilt welled up in my heart again.
"Don't cry, don't cry, it's not your fault, it's the fault of those heartless bastards."
Aunt Liu used her cotton sleeve to wipe my tears, comforting me while cursing the thugs.
Brother Liu watched from the side, his expression somewhat sad.
“Our girl is about your age. We haven’t been in touch since the apocalypse. Seeing you being bullied makes us feel like our girl has been bullied too.”
Brother Liu spoke calmly and slowly, saying the following words.
I stopped crying, unsure of what to say to comfort the couple.
"I'm sorry for reminding you of sad things."
"Oh, it's alright, I've come to terms with it after all this time."
Sister Liu nudged Brother Liu with her elbow and comforted me in a loud voice.
"By the way, what do you need our help with?"
Aunt Liu lightened the mood by changing the subject.
"Oh, right, that's why I want to build a wall around the yard so that criminals can't climb over it."
That's when I remembered to get down to business. I paused for a moment and then continued, "Could you ask Brother Liu to help me find some reliable people to help build a wall around my yard? I'll pay for the labor and materials as usual."
