The rapid knocking on the door pounded at Wang Xiuli's heart with each knock. She remained slumped on the floor, staring blankly at the horrifying body on the bed.
"Could it be the neighbor bringing medicine? But the person is dead..."
Wang Xiuli never imagined that someone from outside would break into the community amidst such heavy snow. Now that Zhao Qian had died inexplicably at home, she was a little scared. What if a neighbor happened to see him?
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The knocking grew more urgent, and then an extremely impatient male voice burst in:
"Open the door! Open the door!"
William dashed from the balcony into the living room and barked loudly through the door, making Wang Xiuli's head buzz.
She frowned and rubbed her temples vigorously...
"Hiding isn't a solution." So she steeled herself, forced herself to stand up, and walked to the bedside.
At this moment, Zhao Qian's face was completely bloodless, he had stopped bleeding, and his body was almost frozen solid.
Wang Xiuli closed her eyes to suppress her nausea, her hands trembling as she twisted the corner of the blanket and pulled it over Zhao Qian, perfectly covering his neck and below.
She cautiously opened her eyes and checked:
"You shouldn't be able to tell anything from this."
He immediately turned away and walked out, gently closing the study door behind him. Composing himself, he walked to the front door while still cursing.
"They're here! Stop arguing! What's all the noise about!"
She had barely opened the door a crack when the man outside shoved it open and rushed in!
After Wang Xiuli looked closely, she realized that these were not her neighbors at all, but two strange men dressed in the same clothes.
She had seen the news; the city was rife with rioters, committing murder, robbery, and all sorts of atrocities.
"Could they be a mob trying to steal things?" Wang Xiuli realized this and retreated in fright, standing in the corner.
William sensed his master's fear, stopped barking, lowered his body and growled, revealing his sharp teeth...
"Who are you? There's almost no food left in the house."
The short apostle, seeing the house's luxurious decor, rushed into the kitchen and exclaimed, "We'll only know if there's food until we see it!"
He quickly ran out carrying a bag of rice, half a box of instant noodles, and some vegetables:
"Brother, we really don't have much stuff, what should we do?"
The tall apostle looked around, searching every room, and finally found the man lying on the bed in the study.
"Wow, even in this situation, how can your man still sleep?"
Seeing this, Wang Xiuli panicked, fearing he would notice something was wrong, and quickly explained:
"No, he's injured and unconscious."
"Injured?" The tall apostle noticed the man's pale face and sensed something was wrong. He was about to pull back the covers...
Wang Xiuli screamed:
"Ah! You don't know, he was harmed by his neighbor! That woman had a lot of food stored up at home, and my husband just wanted to borrow some from her, and she hurt him like this!"
Wang Xiuli covered her face and cried:
"Waaaaah... Waaaaah... That's so cruel, just letting someone die... Waaaaah..."
Ever since Zhao Qian returned from his serious injury, Wang Xiuli has harbored a deep hatred for her female neighbor in the East District and vowed to make her pay with her life!
Now that such a great opportunity for revenge was presented to her, she almost immediately thought of the method of "shifting the blame eastward".
Just as she expected, the man immediately stopped what he was doing after she revealed the information. He didn't lift the blanket and quickly walked back to the living room.
He grabbed the woman's body, stared into her eyes, and asked:
"What neighbor? What woman? Explain yourself!"
Wang Xiuli felt a surge of satisfaction; she finally had a way to get revenge on that bitch. A flash of ruthlessness crossed her eyes as she looked up at the man and feigned panic, saying:
"That beautiful neighbor has stocked up on a lot of food. All the neighbors in the community have seen it. You can go ask her. I'm telling the truth!"
Seeing the gleam in the man's eyes, Wang Xiuli continued in a low voice:
"My husband caught her secretly bringing a truckload of meat home in the middle of the night! If I tell even half a lie, may I die a horrible death!"
The two men exchanged a glance, unable to hide their joy. This time, they might have stumbled upon a "big fish"!
These days of searching everywhere in the freezing cold are finally over. If I make a great contribution this time, I won't have to do this kind of hard work anymore!
"Where does that woman you just mentioned live?"
Wang Xiuli led them to the balcony and pointed to the buildings not far away:
“It’s in that building. My husband said they live on the top few floors.”
The short apostle swallowed hard with excitement:
"Brother, should we go check it out? Or should we report directly to Captain Qian?"
The way he called him "Captain Qian" was clearly inappropriate to outsiders. The tall apostle gave him a look, signaling him to shut up, and then turned and walked back to the living room.
As he left, he said fiercely to the woman:
"Let's go check it out over there. You better not be lying to me! Otherwise, you'll be sorry when we get back!"
Wang Xiuli cried and said, "It's all true. I wouldn't dare to lie to you even if I had the guts. You'll see when you get there."
Upon hearing this, the two quickly left the house, the shorter man carrying the rice and instant noodles he had just found.
What are you going to do with these?
"Take a little bit, a thief shouldn't leave empty-handed, it's bad luck if he leaves empty-handed."
"Damn it, you're the thief! Stick close to me, we're going to that woman's house to check it out. If it's really as she says, we'll turn our lives around!"
Wang Feifei's home was not far from Wang Xiuli's home, and the two quickly arrived downstairs.
"Brother, this building looks to be over twenty stories high. We can't take the elevator because of the power outage. Do we really have to walk up?"
The tall apostle said impatiently:
"Of course we need to confirm it. Don't you even know where we are? It's so far from the base. If we don't confirm it, we'll have headquarters send troops over. If that woman is lying, we'll be in big trouble."
At this point, he also began to panic:
"Forget about rewards; if Captain Qian gets angry and sends us to the 'rookie camp,' we'll be completely finished!"
The other apostle, startled by these words, shrank back and nodded repeatedly.
"Luckily I came out with my brother, otherwise I would have inexplicably lost my life!"
"Let's walk slowly, it's not that high, it'll just take a little longer. Let's go!"
The two apostles had just entered the elevator lobby one after the other when they immediately sensed something was wrong.
"Damn! Why is it so slippery? What's that thing on the ground?"
"Brother, the ground looks like ice!"
The tall apostle touched the ground with his hand; it really was a thick layer of ice. Then he burst into laughter…
"Brother, what's wrong? What are you laughing at?"
"Were you walking on ice outside the apartment building where they keep their dog?"
"No."
"That's it! This ice was clearly intentionally arranged. Someone upstairs must be a 'big fish' to go to such lengths!"
"Brother, you're amazing!"
The tall apostle's eyes darkened, and he said in a deep voice:
"Let's go up the stairs!"
