The two entered the camp and had just gotten out of the car when instructor Xu Jingsong came over.
"Commander Rong, you're finally back! You forgot to pick up the medicine the doctor prescribed this morning."
Upon hearing this, Gu Chu looked at Rong Shi in surprise: "Medicine? What's wrong with you?"
Xu Jingsong smiled and looked at Gu Chu: "This must be your sister-in-law, right? It's a pleasure to meet you. I was away studying when you came to the camp last time. I felt regretful when I heard that you had visited the camp. But seeing you today, I suddenly understand why Battalion Commander Rong didn't make a fuss about getting married. He was afraid that your sister-in-law would run away!"
Rong Shi introduced Gu Chu: "Camp instructor, Xu Jingsong."
Gu Chu greeted the other party politely: "Coach Xu, hello! I am Gu Chu."
"Sister-in-law, since you're here, I'll leave this medicine to you. This is for applying. Remember, apply it twice a day. I won't bother you any longer. Go back to your dormitory area and apply the medicine!" Xu Jingsong said, then turned and left.
Gu Chu looked down at the medicine bottle in her hand, then looked at Rong Shi: "Are you injured?"
Rong Shi said casually, "It's nothing, just a minor injury."
Gu Chu immediately realized something and suddenly understood why Rong Shi looked unwell: "Come on, let me take a look at you."
The two arrived at the dormitory, and at Gu Chu's request, Rong Shi took off his shirt to reveal the bandaged wound on his back.
Upon removing the gauze, a scar resembling a centipede appeared before my eyes. The scar was about the length of a finger and looked somewhat grotesque because it had been stitched up.
"How did you get hurt?" Gu Chu asked with concern.
"It's nothing," Rong Shi said.
Gu Chu noticed that, in addition to the wound that had just been stitched up, Rong Shi had other scars on his body that had healed earlier. They were all different, some as long as 20 centimeters and some as short as if they had been stabbed with a dagger.
She subconsciously reached out and gently touched the long-healed scars, her voice tinged with emotion: "How did you get these scars on your back?"
Rong Shi felt a tingling electric current run through his back, which was a little itchy. He turned around and grabbed Gu Chu's hand: "Don't worry, I've survived a hail of bullets, this little injury is nothing."
Gu Chu snapped out of her daze, her gaze falling on the hand that Rong Shi had grabbed. She froze for a few seconds, then abruptly pulled her hand back, her heart racing.
"Don't move, I'll apply the medicine for you," Gu Chu said somewhat awkwardly.
After applying the medicine, Gu Chu pressed, "How exactly did you get hurt?"
"I encountered an assassin this morning when I left the hotel," Rong Shi said succinctly.
Gu Chu was shocked: "Assassin!"
Rong Shi explained, "Before Lu Beichuan left, he captured an assassin. The man was a member of an overseas bounty organization. Today, on the way to prison, the special police were escorting the assassin when one of their accomplices tried to rescue him, and I happened to run into him."
Upon learning the truth, Gu Chu's heart pounded with anxiety: "You made your move, did you catch them?"
“Three people were arrested, but one accomplice escaped,” Rong Shi said.
Suddenly, Gu Chu's phone rang.
When Gu Chu saw the caller ID, she recognized Rong's mother and immediately glanced at Rong Shi.
"Hello? Mom?"
Rong's mother's voice rang out: "Chuchu, tomorrow is Xizhi's birthday. Could you please take some time to visit him for me?"
Gu Chu understood. Her mother-in-law was worried about them living apart and was trying to find ways to create opportunities for them to meet!
"Mom, I'm already by his side," Gu Chu said truthfully.
After Gu Chu finished speaking, she handed the phone to Rong Shi.
Rong Shi said, "Ms. Fang, I'm already married, so you can stop worrying about me."
Rong's mother said, "Xizhi, I prepared a birthday gift for you. I sent it a few days ago, and it should have arrived at the camp by now. Did you receive it?"
Gu Chu frowned upon hearing this: The camp can actually receive packages?
Just as Rong Shi hung up the phone, there was a knock on the dormitory door.
Rong Shi hurriedly dressed and said, "Come in!"
A young soldier pushed open the door: "Battalion Commander, there's a package for you."
Gu Chu took it and said, "Thank you!"
"Should we take it apart?" Gu Chu asked casually.
"No!" Rong Shi said urgently, trying to stop him.
Since he left his hometown, his mother has sent him gifts every year on his birthday. At first, they were sports equipment, then daily necessities. Now that he is married, I wonder what kind of ingenious ideas his mother will come up with this time.
Seeing Rong Shi's nervousness, Gu Chu looked at him with suspicion: "What's wrong?"
Rong Shi looked at Gu Chu, hesitated for a few seconds, and said, "You drive!"
"Never mind, you can handle your own things," Gu Chu said, placing the package on the shelf.
Rong Shi got up and went over, took a deep breath, and opened the package.
Inside was a photo album, one that Rong Shi knew all too well; it contained his memories from childhood to adulthood.
From being naked to wearing open-crotch pants, and then to graduating from university and joining the army, it covers all age groups.
Gu Chu picked up the photo album and flipped through it. She couldn't help but smile when she saw Rong Shi's baby photos.
There's also the image of her wearing open-crotch pants when she was learning to speak, and even though she knew it was a child, she would inexplicably blush and her heart would race.
Just then, Rong Shi's WeChat notification sounded a few times.
He opened WeChat and saw that his mother had sent him several photos of unfamiliar children, along with a long voice message. Rong Shi clicked on the voice message with some confusion.
"Xizhi, the first photo is of your Aunt Wang's grandson, the Qiangzi who used to fight with you and make you cry when you were little. He's three years old now. And that pretty little girl is your Uncle Xiao's granddaughter next door. She's four years old now. I remember Xiao Bowen is the same age as you. The third photo..."
Rong Shi turned off Rong Shi's voice message before Rong Shi could finish listening to it.
Turning around, she met Gu Chu's surprised expression.
"Is Auntie trying to urge me to have a baby?" Gu Chu asked.
Rong Shi's expression was indifferent: "I'm used to it. I used to pressure them to get married."
