················
From their conversation, Gu Chu learned the gist of the matter.
Her mother is Sheng Shuxian, the eldest daughter of the Sheng family, and also Qiu Chuji's college classmate. Qiu Chuji is a gold digger. When he learned that Sheng Shuxian was the daughter of the Sheng family, he wanted to marry her. However, Sheng Shuxian did not like Qiu Chuji. So, Qiu Chuji plotted against Sheng Shuxian and Mu Hui. After Sheng Shuxian became pregnant, Mu Hui had already gone abroad. For the sake of her child, Sheng Shuxian had no choice but to marry Qiu Chuji.
However, Sheng Shuxian's father was unwilling for his daughter to marry down, so Qiu Chuji proposed that he could marry into the family for wealth and status, and Sheng's father agreed to this for the sake of his daughter's reputation.
“Rong Shi, my surname is Mu! I have my own surname now!” Gu Chu excitedly threw herself into Rong Shi’s arms.
Rong Shi held her and gently comforted her: "Yes, maybe your mother is still alive. She just fell into the sea and went missing. As long as her body hasn't been found, there is hope. Don't worry, I will find your parents and give you a complete family."
"Okay, I believe you. I'll believe you again in the future!"
Gu Chu was incredibly excited. After living two lives, she finally learned about her origins. Perhaps it was God's pity that allowed her to be reborn, giving her the opportunity to meet Su Wan and discover her past.
She thought that if her father hadn't gone abroad, she and Su Wan would definitely have been the pampered little princesses of the Sheng family, and they wouldn't have suffered the hardships of their past lives, nor would Su Wan have encountered those misfortunes.
Unfortunately, there are no "what ifs".
Bitter tears streamed down her face as Gu Chu closed her eyes and took the initiative to kiss Rong Shi's warm lips.
A passionate kiss left them both mesmerized, the intensity shifting from gentle to fiery, until they could no longer control themselves.
That was their deep and unwavering love for each other, a love that went to the very core of their being.
While kissing Gu Chu, Rong Shi took off Gu Chu's suit jacket. As he threw it away, a voice recorder fell from the pocket to the ground with a thud.
The two paused, and Rong Shi turned around to look at the recording pen on the ground.
A flicker of panic crossed Gu Chu's eyes. Rong Shi released Gu Chu, picked up the recorder, and the desire in his eyes faded. He held the recorder, his gaze fixed on the play button, and remained silent for a long while before finally not pressing it.
He handed the recorder to Gu Chu, his voice calm: "Keep it safe, or it'll be a waste if it gets damaged."
Gu Chu saw that Rong Shi didn't ask anything. She knew that if she didn't explain clearly, this matter would become a thorn in her and Rong Shi's hearts.
She took the recorder, looked at Rong Shi for a while, and then suddenly pressed the play button.
A deep, unfamiliar male voice came from the recording device: "Secretary Gu, I'm hosting a banquet for Mayor Zhao and Vice Mayor Chang tomorrow night. Please arrange a hotel."
Gu Chu's voice came through: "Okay."
"Close the door."
The sound of a door closing.
"Secretary Gu, I never expected you to be the adopted daughter of the Gu family. Does that mean you're my sister-in-law?"
"Minister Liang, this is working time, let's not talk about personal matters."
"We're all family, why distinguish between public and private matters? Your sister is nice, but you're prettier than her. Judging from your usually aloof demeanor, you probably don't have a boyfriend. Do you want me to introduce you to someone?"
"Minister Liang, if there's nothing else, I'll go back to my work now."
"Stop! Did I say you could leave without me saying anything?"
“Minister Liang, I have severed ties with the Gu family. I don’t want to hear about your affairs with the Gu family.”
"Sever ties? That's not good. You're a girl all alone, and I only promoted you to be my secretary because you're Qingling's sister. Aren't you grateful to me?"
"I'm sorry, but if you promoted me for personal reasons, I'm afraid I'm not qualified to be your secretary."
“You and your sister are very different. One is as passionate as fire, and the other is as cold as ice. I’ve already experienced the passionate one, but as for the cold one… if you’re obedient, I can lend you my brother-in-law’s embrace to warm you up.”
"Stop right there! If you come any closer, I'll call for help!"
Rong Shi's gaze was cold and sharp, as if it would turn into an ice blade and pierce through the tape recorder to the man speaking inside.
"You dare to shout? Unless you don't want to stay here anymore. I heard you had a hard time getting in; so many people are eyeing this secure job. Aren't you afraid of losing it? Be good, as long as you behave and serve me well..."
Upon hearing this, Rong Shi's face turned as black as the bottom of a pot. He could no longer suppress his anger. A fierce glint appeared in his eyes as he snatched the recording pen from Gu Chu's hand and turned it off.
"Who is that damn guy?" Rong Shi's eyes blazed with rage, his expression one of bloodlust.
Seeing that he was angry, Gu Chu stood up and took his hand: "Rong Shi, don't be like this, I'm fine. I held a pen to his neck and he chickened out. I escaped a disaster."
Rong Shi pulled her into his arms and held her tightly, as if afraid she would leave.
"Chu Chu, don't be afraid, I will handle this." Rong Shi was somewhat agitated, filled with anger, a anger that wanted to grind that person to dust.
Gu Chu hugged Rong Shi, leaning against him with a fierce look in her eyes: "I'm not afraid. I'll deal with whatever comes my way. If he dares to bully me, I'll go all out. At worst, I'll lose my job!"
Rong Shi lowered his head and kissed the top of her head, suppressing his anger, and asked softly, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Gu Chu looked up at him with tender affection: "I can't trouble you with every little thing. It was an accident that you found out. I'm more afraid that you'll misunderstand me."
When Rong Shi picked up the recording pen from the ground and looked at her, a moment of suspicion and coldness flashed in his eyes. That moment of suspicion and coldness was really terrifying to Gu Chu, more terrifying than killing her.
What she couldn't accept most was that the man she deeply loved didn't trust her and looked down on her.
As Gu Chu spoke her last words, she instinctively hugged Rong Shi tighter, her voice trembling slightly.
