After tinkering around all afternoon, Han Ming and Dong Xiaolu rode their electric scooter home and realized it was already 5:30.
No wonder Uncle Liang was rushing home; it seems he was in a hurry to cook dinner for his wife, Teacher Pan.
By the way, it's summer vacation now, so Uncle Liang's daughter, Liang Qi, who is in college, should be at home too.
People who used to be busy at the factory seem to have a rare free time to spend more time with their families these days.
The house was quiet; it seemed all the guests had left. At this moment, besides his parents, only Han Ming and his girlfriend Dong Xiaolu were home.
Han Ming poured Dong Xiaolu a cup of tea and gave her some snacks, then asked his girlfriend to sit in the living room and watch TV for a while.
He quietly went to the back room where his father was staying and found his father still resting quietly on the bed.
Since going up and down the stairs is inconvenient for the patient and his mother who is taking care of him, his father has been settled in the back room on the first floor.
With Mom by my side, eating, drinking, and using the toilet are much more convenient than running up and down the stairs.
Han Ming walked to his father's window. Han Baili, who had recovered after two weeks, heard the noise and, seeing that it was his son, slightly twisted his neck and smiled at Han Ming.
Han Ming called out "Dad," and Han Baili responded softly, looking at his son with a loving expression.
Han Baili has been thinking a lot lately. He used to be busy and hard-working, but he finally managed to build a comfortable life for his family.
Who knows what misfortune can strike at any moment? Just when he had the chance to build a bigger business for his wife and children, he was ruined by an old friend.
He knew Ni Guohai was a gambler before, but he always thought that people in sales should socialize and play along with others. Who knew it would cause such a big trouble?
Now it's not just Ni Guohai's family that's having a hard time; his own family is also suffering greatly. The factory... sigh, it's hard to save it.
Thinking this, a pained expression involuntarily appeared on his face again. Han Ming noticed his father's unusual expression and knew he was probably thinking about the factory again, so he comforted him:
"Dad, it's okay. We'll get better, the factory is still here, don't worry, we'll turn things around eventually."
This afternoon, Han Baili also learned, more or less, from Liang Jianxing and the others that his son's girlfriend had a way to save the factory.
Then, hearing her son comfort her, she couldn't help but sigh that her son had grown up, was capable of handling things, had good judgment of people, and had found such a capable girlfriend.
With a slight smile, she said to Han Ming:
"Mingming, Dad's fine, don't worry. Go out and take good care of your girlfriend, her name is Xiaolu, right?"
Han Ming responded, and Han Baili continued:
"Your mother is in the kitchen, but she closed the door so as not to disturb my rest."
Han Ming glanced at the air conditioner's airflow, whispered a few words to his father, then left the room and went to the kitchen at the back of the house.
Han Ming's kitchen was a separate room built at the back of the house. As Han Ming walked over, he could see his mother busy at the stove through the window.
He pushed open the door and called out "Mom," which startled Chen Fang, who was busy preparing the dishes. When she turned around and saw that it was her son, she scolded him for being so quiet and frightening.
However, she didn't say much, just asked Han Mingdong and Xiao Lu where they were and why they didn't come back together.
Han Ming said his girlfriend was watching TV in the living room, but his mother rolled her eyes at him and scolded him for not going to keep the girl company.
Han Ming smelled the aroma wafting from the pot and saw his mother still chopping vegetables. Looking down at the stove next to her, he saw several plates of food—fish and meat—that hadn't been cooked yet. Han Ming couldn't help but ask his mother:
"Mom, it seems like Dad can't eat so much meat right now. Look, there's fish and meat everywhere. Didn't the doctor say to eat more vegetables and fruits?"
"fool."
Chen Fang glared at Han Ming, annoyed, and said:
"It's a shame your dad named you Ming, meaning you should be smart and clever, but I don't see you understanding that at all."
This is food I made for your girlfriend and for my future daughter-in-law.
After Chen Fang finished speaking, she glared at Han Ming reproachfully, which made Han Ming feel very frustrated.
Why did bringing home a girlfriend make me feel like I'm not my mother's biological child, and I get scolded all the time?
"She can't possibly eat all that food. There were still quite a few left over from lunch, so we can just reheat them."
Han Ming was still not satisfied and planned to refute it.
Hearing her son say that, Chen Fang got really angry, and her voice rose a little:
"Are you really stupid or just pretending to be confused?"
"Your girlfriend came to our house for the first time, and you made her eat leftovers? You're a college student, what have you learned from your studies?!"
"Well."
Han Ming was speechless after what his mother said.
"You silly child, they helped our family so much, cooking this little bit of food is nothing."
Don't forget, Mom has been cooking for decades. I'd say her skills are just as good as any chef in a city restaurant.
When Chen Fang talks about cooking, she is quite confident.
"Yes, yes, you are a national-level master chef and the designated cook for the Zhongnanhai canteen."
Han Ming joked.
"Hey, you kid. Go away, don't cause me any trouble. Go keep Xiaolu company."
Chen Fang kicked Han Ming out of the kitchen:
"Dinner will be ready in a little while. Go and get something to eat for Xiaolu to fill her stomach."
"This mother of mine is so biased. She's really forgotten her son now that she has a daughter-in-law. She talks about Xiaolu all the time. I'm like an outsider now."
Muttering to himself, Han Ming had no choice but to go to the living room.
