Chapter 20 (20) Support
That night, Lianzhi had a stomachache and invited several doctors into the house.
Bai Kang had barely slept for an hour when he was woken by a noise from next door. He thought Lianzhi was up to something again, but the housekeeper said Lianzhi had a severe stomachache and couldn't bear it anymore, so she called the doctor.
After hearing this, Bo Kang's temper disappeared instantly. He sighed and felt that he hadn't had a good night's sleep since he brought Lianzhi back.
The tinkling of the tinkling taro next door—I wonder how that could have happened? When Bo Kang entered, Lianzhi was sitting on the bed, wrapped in a blanket, clutching her stomach. Her lips were pouting, her face pale. Her knee-length hair draped over the edge of the bed, swaying slightly as he trembled.
His cat-like round eyes were filled with tears, and he kept blinking them, as if trying not to let them fall. But if he moved, his stomach would hurt even more, so he dared not move again.
So pitiful. Bai Kang looked at him from afar and suddenly understood why when they investigated Lianzhi's past at Chunfeng Tower, they said that he played the pipa poorly, but was still so popular.
Just sitting there quietly, he was incredibly beautiful. Who cared about the sound of pipa or qin? Just for that face, it was enough for everyone to spend a fortune on him.
Bo Kang was a little dazed and failed to enter the house immediately, so Lianzhi discovered him first. When he saw Lianzhi was about to speak, he was startled.
I'm about to lose my temper again.
Such a beautiful picture of a beauty was ruined by the resemblance to Chen Fenglian. Chen Fenglian's face was one point... no, it could still be eight out of ten. But even if it was ten points of beauty, it was also ruined by the same ten points of cunning.
Bo Kang walked over quickly, thinking that if Lianzhi lost her temper, he would cover his mouth first to prevent the family scandal from being exposed. But before he could move, Lianzhi's eyelashes trembled and she just looked at him aggrievedly.
At this moment, Bai Kang suddenly felt that he had to admit that Lianzhi's popularity was related to the fact that she looked a bit like Chen Fenglian.
"What's going on?" Bai Kang asked the doctors around to stand up, sat down next to Lianzhi, and coaxed her softly, "The doctor is here. You'll be fine after taking the medicine."
Lianzhi gave him a resentful look, opened her mouth, but said nothing.
This is too strange.
"Why aren't you talking? Doesn't it hurt?" He was so well behaved that Bo Kang wanted to tease him. "If it doesn't hurt, I'll send all the doctors back."
Lianzhi then reached out, grabbed his sleeve, and whispered, "It hurts. I don't have the energy to talk."
To make Lianzhi, who was always sharp-tongued and unforgiving, so painful that she refused to speak, must be truly painful. Thinking of this, Bo Kang's tone became more serious, and he couldn't help but take it more seriously. He looked at the doctors kneeling on either side and asked, "What have you found?"
"My Lord, this is the seafood soup that this young master is taking..."
Just as the doctor started to speak tremblingly, Bai Kang said, "I told you to drink less of that. Seafood is cold, so don't be greedy in the future..."
Before he finished speaking, the doctor continued, "It was the seafood soup that was spiked with diarrhea-causing medicine. Fortunately, the young master didn't eat much, so it's not a big problem."
After the words were spoken, silence fell.
Bai Kang stared at the bowl of seafood soup on the table, having only taken a few sips. After a moment, he punched the bedside post. The servants around him were surprised and knelt down one after another.
So angry? Lianzhi looked at him in surprise. She had never expected that Bai Kang would be so angry that he would hit the pillar after being drugged. He pursed his lips and said nothing. Bai Kang glanced at him and said to the housekeeper, "Call the cook and everyone who handled this bowl of soup."
His eyes fell on the soup bowl. He believed what the doctor said. First of all, it was indeed Lianzhi's habit to eat only a little and not waste food. He also knew that the people in the mansion didn't like Lianzhi.
Most importantly, Lianzhi doesn't seem like someone who would joke about her own body.
The cook and the two soup boys were called in for thorough questioning. Bo Kang ordered that if they refused to confess, they would be severely beaten until they confessed.
His methods were known to the servants in the palace. Bai Kang, who had previously served under King Mu of the North, wasn't actually from a humble background. He was a military scholar, and it was said he'd spent his days hanging out with frontier soldiers—he'd suffered more injuries than he'd read. This wasn't to say Bai Kang didn't enjoy reading, but rather that his expertise lay elsewhere.
In the past, there were also some traitors in the mansion who were beaten to a pulp by Bo Kang and thrown out. He didn't have the same principles as the noble families in the capital who only bought people and never let them go. Anyone who crossed his bottom line would be thrown out.
Poisoning the master of the mansion obviously touched his bottom line.
No one outside confessed for a long time, nearly frightening the doctors inside. A faint smell of blood lingered in the air, and he began to wonder if Lianzhi had staged this incident herself. But the woman only rubbed her stomach slightly, tears in her eyes. Unsure, Bo Kang waited a moment longer before hearing the butler report that the cook had confessed.
He didn't poison her, but rather put some cold and incompatible foods in her food, just to play a little trick on her. In his eyes, Lianzhi had a bad temper and deserved a lesson.
Lianzhi beside him suddenly grabbed his sleeve again and whispered, "You're trying to hurt me again."
His voice was filled with tears. Bo Kang's eyebrows twitched, and his anger intensified.
"Throw it out." Bai Kang ordered.
Regardless of whether they were incompatible foods or laxatives, if he couldn't recognize his place, he deserved to be punished. Lianzhi was someone he brought back personally, and everyone in the mansion already knew about their arranged marriage.
What's the difference between bullying Lianzhi and bullying him?
The cook and two servants were expelled from the Shangshu Mansion. Bai Kang asked the doctor to prescribe some tonic medicine for Lianzhi and watched him drink it. Lianzhi seemed to be in great pain and didn't even feel like crying out, but he also didn't have the energy to drink the medicine. Bai Kang picked up the soup spoon and fed him: "Eat less seafood in the future. Eating too much will make you feel uncomfortable. Look, your greed has been noticed by others."
"I love to eat." Lianzhi hummed.
He seemed to have regained some strength, but he stopped making a fuss. A bit of color returned to his snow-white face, and he twitched his lips, trying to smile, "Brother Kang, thank you for standing up for me today. That cook has never liked me."
Bai Kang had discovered a pattern. When Lianzhi was in a good mood or needed help, she would call him "Brother Kang" or "Brother." He tentatively said, "There's no point in keeping someone like that around. I'll have the housekeeper buy two more people and hire a cook."
I've been buying people lately, which is another expense. Sigh.
As expected, Lianzhi said, "Brother Kang, can you please let me go? What if the person you bring back hates me? My life will be so miserable."
"You have no experience, so just listen to me. Let the housekeeper handle these things." Bo Kang rubbed the top of his head, his tone gentle but unyielding, clearly telling Lianzhi not to interfere. He stared into Lianzhi's eyes, only to hear Lianzhi say, "Oh. All right then."
He let go of Bo Kang and said viciously, "Kicking those three out is too easy for them! They should be made to clean toilets for a few months first!"
Or is she still holding a grudge against him? Bo Kang didn't say anything, but suddenly he felt that Lianzhi was like a kitten showing its claws and swaying, very cute. Perhaps it was because Lianzhi was really obedient today, Bo Kang rarely felt that Lianzhi was still quite cute.
Sleepiness washed over him. He had been woken in the first place, and now that it was late, he could just go back to sleep. He was thinking of being lazy, asking Lianzhi to move and just make do for the night. But then, thinking of Lianzhi's earlier "heroic appearance," he put on his cloak and went back.
Before leaving, he instructed: "If you feel uncomfortable again, send someone to find the housekeeper."
Lianzhi nodded vigorously. After the others left, he waved to Eunuch Wen, who had been standing beside him without saying a word.
Eunuch Wen looked at him with red eyes, even sadder than the person who had been drugged: "Master, you have suffered! Those people are such bastards, they actually drugged you!"
Lianzhi pricked up her ears and heard a slight snoring sound coming from next door. She smiled slyly and said, "Xiao Wenzi, don't worry. I didn't drink the medicine."
He had secretly put the medicine into the bowl after taking a few sips of the soup. Just as Bai Kang thought, he was not the kind of person who would joke with his own body, so how could he really drink medicine that would give him abdominal pain?
It was just to frame the cook.
But the cook wasn't wronged. He had originally thought that if the cook didn't add any extra ingredients to his food, he would have Bo Kang beat him up and sent him to clean toilets for the rest of his life. Since he wasn't wronged, even if he was beaten to death, it was his own fault.
In this regard, Bai Kang is much more ruthless than him.
He actually had to rely on Bo Kang to bully others and deal with those around him. He was really down and out. Lianzhi sighed and lay down to sleep. His stomach did hurt a little, but it wasn't that bad. His previous performance was only three parts real and seven parts fake.
He didn't sleep well that night, and the next morning he still felt a little upset. Word of last night's events had spread, and the servants in the mansion weren't surprised. They hadn't expected the cook to actually drug Young Master Lianzhi.
Although they disliked Young Master Lianzhi, it wasn't to this extent. The cook had said Young Master Lianzhi was too arrogant, but he wasn't the type to drug anyone. He wasn't that bold.
There is something strange about this.
Moreover, although Lord Bai had punished the three people, they had seen it clearly last night. Even though it was so dark, Lord Bai still went back to his room to sleep. They did not consummate their marriage.
That was because Master Bai didn't care that much about Master Lianzhi. Servants were the best at adapting to the situation; they knew what was going on, more clearly than many of their masters.
So, when Lianzhi once again asked Eunuch Wen to summon people with the list, they went, but their attitude was still casual. A few days ago, they heard that Master Lianzhi had given away a lot of money in order to win people's hearts.
They can pretend to do something in order to get the money.
Fortunately, Lianzhi had people spread the news throughout the mansion, so even though he had been away for several days, everyone still knew about it. That morning, all the servants on the roster came, except for the three who had been kicked out of the mansion.
Those three were the ones who disliked him the most. He intended to make an example of them, but that didn't mean he wouldn't punish the monkeys. Even though his status was lower than before, he wouldn't let anyone who offended him go.
He has other tricks up his sleeve.
