Madam Shen, Marquis Shen, and Madam Qin had already received news from Shen Qingcheng that the tyrant had returned to the capital this morning, and they had been waiting at the gate with their servants since early morning.
Anyone who didn't know better would think some very important person was coming.
Everyone was waiting for Marquis Anbo to bring Shen Jiao back.
"It's the master! The master is back!" a sharp-eyed servant shouted excitedly from the corner.
"It's the master's carriage!"
"The young lady is back!"
"Go and urge the kitchen to make sure the eldest daughter's favorite dishes are ready." Old Madam Shen's eyes welled up with tears. Suppressing her excitement, she turned her head and instructed the nanny who had served her for many years.
The old woman smiled, "Yes! This old servant will go right away, and I guarantee that the young lady will be able to eat a hot eight-treasure duck as soon as she enters the door."
After giving these instructions, Lord Shen and his wife couldn't wait to go forward together to greet the approaching carriage.
Qin followed closely behind.
Who would make their elders come out to greet their younger generation upon their return home, making such a grand spectacle? Even passersby and neighbors, though often out of touch with the news, would know that Shen Jiao, who had been sent to Huguo Temple to reflect on his mistakes, had returned.
"Sigh, I don't know what the old Marquis Shen and his wife were thinking, how could they dote on such a troublemaker so much?"
"Does Madam Shen not remember that on her birthday, Shen Jiao gave her a headless snake, which caused her to be bedridden for three months?"
"And another thing, didn't you say you were going to stay at Huguo Temple for three years? Why did you come back in less than a year? Could it be that Shen Jiao was also causing trouble at Huguo Temple and was sent back?"
"It's possible, it's possible, it's highly likely."
"This troublemaker is incorrigible and will cause chaos in the Marquis of Anbo's mansion again. Poor Miss Yu'er, she did nothing wrong, but she has to live in fear every day again." The crowd chattered and whispered among themselves.
"Jiaojiao! Come out quickly, Grandma has come to take you home." Before the carriage had even come to a complete stop, Old Madam Shen called out anxiously.
Old Master Shen hid the birdcage containing the eight treasures behind his back, glared at his wife, and said, "No rush, no rush, my dear daughter, no rush. Wait until the car is completely stopped before getting out. Your grandfather has prepared some good things for you."
Qin stared intently at the unlifted carriage curtain, trying to see through it. Her nose stung with tears, and she opened her mouth but dared not utter a sound.
I haven't seen my daughter for almost a year. Langya Pass is so chaotic, and the southern border is so far away. I don't know how she is doing.
Are you injured?
The maid beside her patted her mistress's hand in a comforting gesture.
The maid sighed, "Actually, it's not easy for the lady either."
When the eldest daughter was sent to Huguo Temple, the two elders happened to be away from home.
Lord Shen accompanied his wife on a journey south to attend the funeral of their comrade-in-arms, a trip that took almost half a year before they returned home.
However, the lady's initial agreement to send the eldest daughter away was not her own intention, but rather a last resort.
Hopefully, the eldest daughter will understand the lady's good intentions upon her return this time.
The carriage curtain remained closed, and there was no movement whatsoever. After so many years of military campaigns, Lord Shen's eyes were like those of a hawk.
His face immediately darkened. "Get out here now!"
"Ahem, Father, Mother, Madam, what are you all doing here? It's windy, go home quickly." Marquis Anbo chuckled awkwardly, lifted the curtain and came out.
He was all alone.
Worried that Shen Yu and Shen Qingye would be blamed by their parents, Anbo Hou told the siblings to go for a stroll and come home later.
"Where is she!" Old Madam Shen stared at Marquis An with her cloudy yet shrewd eyes. "Where is Jiaojiao?"
Marquis Anbo blurted out, "That rebellious daughter..."
"Speak properly!" Madam Shen snapped.
My mother's health has been poor these past two years, and she has to take medicine every few days to regulate her body. The imperial physician said that she must not be subjected to excessive stress.
Marquis Anbo quickly lowered his head and admitted his mistake: "Yes, yes, it was my fault for speaking carelessly. Mother, please calm down. Jiaojiao has returned to the palace with His Majesty. Mother, you don't need to worry. She's living a very comfortable life. Now that she's climbed the social ladder, she doesn't care about us at all..."
"You saw Jiaojiao?" Old Marquis Shen knew his good-for-nothing son fairly well.
Marquis Anbo's face turned ugly: "No, nothing."
"Fine, very well indeed! You good-for-nothing idiot! How dare you come back when you can't even bring the person back!"
Lord Shen handed the birdcage to Madam Qin, then picked up Madam Shen's cane and gave Lord Anbo's back two sharp blows.
Despite his advanced age, Lord Shen's strength is as great as ever.
"Father, Father... there are people watching outside." Marquis Anbo grimaced in pain and slipped behind Madam Qin to hide.
Qin Shi didn't want to pay attention to her husband and walked behind Old Madam Shen with a cold face.
Marquis Anbo: "!!!" Madam, am I no longer your most beloved old darling?
Lord Shen was so angry that his beard stood on end. He raised his trembling index finger and said, "Now, immediately, get to the ancestral hall and kneel down!"
Anbo Hou's eyes widened, and he retorted incredulously, "Father, please be reasonable! This is not my fault! I, as her father, went to pick her up, but this brat put on airs and refused to see me. If anyone should be punished, it should be her!"
If it were Yu'er, she would have gotten out of the carriage to greet him long ago!
Compared to this, Marquis Anbo felt that Shen Jiao was even more immature and wanted to say something.
Madam Shen glared at him, and Marquis An shut his mouth reluctantly and went to kneel in the ancestral hall.
"Wait a minute," Lord Shen suddenly called out to him.
Anbo Hou said happily, "Father, I knew you would love your son and change your mind."
Lord Shen sneered: "I'm just reminding you, don't forget to copy the family rules five hundred more times!"
Marquis Anbo: "!!!"
That's such a thick book, it would take forever to copy it five hundred times!
