Chapter 29 Not Doing Good

Chapter 29 Not Doing Good

"Miss Xie, thank you for saving my sister." Da Ya said, and she and Er Ya kowtowed to Xie Wan Niang together.

Xie Wanniang was startled. She quickly took a step to the side to avoid the two sisters' deep bowing. "I've already bought Xiaoya, you know that, right?"

Daya and Erya nodded in unison. Daya wiped away her tears and explained, "Don't worry, we sisters don't mean to go back on our word."

“My parents were terrified of poverty. Whether they were sick or my sisters and my two brothers were sick, they couldn’t bear to spend money to hire a doctor.”

“We can tough out minor illnesses on our own, but this time… if it weren’t for you, Xiaoya definitely wouldn’t have survived. Your kindness is immense…”

Xie Wanniang waved her hand, "I didn't do you any great favor. I saved Xiaoya because your parents sold her to me. She is now my personal property."

Don't label her as kind and benevolent; she's just an ordinary person with a little compassion.

Daya and Erya exchanged a glance, both unsure of what to do.

Xie Wanniang raised her hand to signal, "You two get up quickly, don't kneel, I can't accept it."

Only after the two sisters hesitantly stood up did Xie Wanniang's tense shoulders and back relax.

She said, "I won't deliberately mistreat her, but I won't indulge her in breaking the rules just because she's young. If your family really wants her to have a good life, then just give and don't ask for anything in return."

Da Ya and Er Ya felt a little awkward. They would be getting married soon, and they could certainly do what Xie Wan Niang asked of them: give to Xiao Ya without asking for anything in return. But they could easily figure out that their parents would never give without asking for anything in return.

Like most parents in the world, their parents also regarded their children as personal property. Sons were expected to continue their family line and provide for them in their old age, while daughters were expected to work hard for their families while they were still at their parents' home, and to bring back money for their families through marriage when they grew up.

They gave birth to Xiaoya and raised her for five years; they would never give up on getting something in return from her.

The two sisters exchanged a glance and fell silent simultaneously.

They have no say in the family and dare not make any promises on behalf of their parents.

Xie Wanniang was not surprised at all by the sisters' reaction. She said, "Since you want to stay here, I will go back to my room first. When the time comes, I will go and wake my master up."

Nodding to the two sisters, Xie Wanniang stepped out of the room.

About half an hour later, she knocked on the window and woke up the half-asleep Dr. Chen.

Hearing the noise, Jiang Yuan, who was sleeping in Hao Yu's room, also came out with Doctor Chen.

Under the hopeful gazes of Daya and Erya, Doctor Chen took Xiaoya's pulse and then touched her forehead. "Not bad, the fever has gone down and she's not convulsing anymore. She should wake up after another dose of medicine at dawn."

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this, but soon they heard Doctor Chen say, "However, you still need to keep a close eye on her. If she gets a fever again, remember to call me immediately."

The high fever has indeed subsided, but that doesn't mean it won't recur later.

Fortunately, Xiao Ya's condition did not continue to deteriorate. Apart from Daya and Er Ya, everyone else slept through the night without being woken up by the two sisters.

After daybreak, Xie Wanniang forced herself to get up despite her sleepiness and ran to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Hearing the commotion, Jiang Yuan immediately ran to the kitchen to help her.

At this point, Daya and Erya said goodbye, "We have to go home."

Although Xiaoya was still asleep, they couldn't stay at Jiang Yuan's house for breakfast.

Xie Wanniang glanced at the two strange sisters and said, "You two stayed up all night watching over Xiaoya, but you're leaving before she even wakes up?"

Jiang Yuan guessed what the two were thinking, "My family doesn't need your breakfast."

Xie Wanniang suddenly realized, "So that's what you're worried about. A-Yuan is right, I've already cooked your portions."

She pointed to the large iron pot covered with a lid, "You can stay and eat with my master."

This morning she made a multigrain noodle soup, with a full third of it made from wheat flour. She added eggs, diced vegetables, meat sauce, and pickled vegetables. The taste was absolutely amazing.

Da Ya and Er Ya shook their heads and waved their hands, still wanting to refuse, but Xie Wan Niang pointed to the room where Xiao Ya was, "If you leave, I'll be cooking. Who will take care of Xiao Ya?"

The two were dumbfounded.

Xie Wanniang said again, "Go do your work, don't just stand here like an idiot."

The two obediently turned around and continued to look at Gu Xiaoya.

Xie Wanniang quickly prepared breakfast. Just then, Doctor Chen had finished washing up. She asked Jiang Yuan to bring a large bowl of dumpling soup to the old man first, and then she ladled out a large bowl with the most dumplings and left it on the stove, waiting for Jiang Yuan to come and get it himself.

She scooped a large spoonful of meat sauce into each of Da Ya and Er Ya's bowls, then added some pickled vegetables, and delivered them directly into the house.

Back in the kitchen, she was about to serve another bowl of small, light noodles for the unwell little girl when Jiang Yuan handed her a bowl of noodle soup he had already prepared, saying, "You eat first."

After saying that, he picked up a wooden spoon, ladled out a bowl of dumpling soup suitable for the little girl, and put it in the cupboard.

Xie Wanniang smiled slightly, picked up her bowl with him, and went to the main room to eat with Doctor Chen.

After the three finished eating, Jiang Yuan went to wash the dishes, while Doctor Chen and Xie Wanniang went to the room where the Xiaoya sisters were.

Perhaps it was the occasional rustling sounds that woke her from her slumber in the morning, but when Doctor Chen and Xie Wanniang entered the room, Xiao Ya opened her eyes very slowly.

Doctor Chen exclaimed "Oh!" and went over to take the little girl's pulse first.

Xie Wanniang waited quietly for a moment, and when she heard Doctor Chen say that Xiaoya was much better and could eat and take medicine, she immediately ran to the kitchen and brought over the bowl of dumpling soup that was still warm.

This bowl of noodles has small and few dumplings, but more eggs and diced vegetables than the other bowls, making it an easy-to-digest and nutritious meal for patients.

Er Ya took the bowl and thanked Xie Wan Niang. Da Ya first took Xiao Ya to the toilet and wash up before bringing Xiao Ya back and letting Er Ya feed her.

As for herself, she went to the kitchen to heat up the bowl of herbal soup she had reserved for Xiaoya the night before.

The work that was being done was taken over by Da Ya, and Xie Wan Niang simply took over Jiang Yuan's work, telling Jiang Yuan to go into the mountains before it got too hot.

Jiang Yuan already knew that Xie Wanniang would have to stay at home today. He nodded, picked up the things he needed to go up the mountain, said goodbye to Doctor Chen, and went into the mountain.

After he left, Doctor Chen went home immediately. The little girl had passed the critical period. As long as Xie Wanniang gave her medicine on time and fed her some good food from time to time to help her recover, she would gradually get better. Naturally, he, as the doctor, would no longer need to stay by her side.
