Someone minds
Song Yu was woken up by the bombardment of messages. Thanks to her mother, her phone had been ringing non-stop for the past few days. She knew what the messages were without even opening the phone.
She got out of bed and smoothed her hair which was a little messy from sleeping. The dormitory was empty. Lan Lin had taken sick leave a few days before the holiday and went out to play. She was the only one in the dormitory these days.
She originally rented a house off campus, but she had classes in the mornings these past few days, so she had been living in the dormitory for the past few days for convenience. Today was the first day of the May Day holiday.
She took out her still vibrating phone from beside the pillow, skipped over the unimportant messages, picked out a few that she wanted to reply to, and then called her mother directly. The ringtone continued to ring but no one answered. Song Yu waited patiently, her slender fingers tapping rhythmically on the smooth table.
Finally, at the last moment when the ringtone was about to end, the phone was picked up, and a cold voice came to Song Yu's ears through the radio transmission, "What?"
As soon as she said this, Song Yu wanted to laugh. Why did she ask her? It was as if the hundreds or even thousands of questioning and hysterical messages in the dialog box these days were not sent by her. But today was the first day of vacation after all, and Song Yu didn't want to cause herself more trouble. She just wanted to spend this vacation quietly, so she held back.
"I'm going home today."
Upon hearing this, the other party snorted coldly, "Home? It's rare that you still think you have a home. If you hadn't told me, I would have thought I picked you up from the street. I see you're so carefree at school that you've forgotten you have parents, right?"
"Didn't you ask me to come back?"
"Yeah, I'm so pitiful. My own child has to be begged by me to come back home. If I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have given birth to a child. I should have just raised a dog. At least it would know how to come home."
Song Yu picked up the cup beside her and took a sip of water without saying anything. There was a continuous silence on the phone, as if realizing that if she continued like this, she might not come home. Then the other party asked in a slightly stiff tone: "How long will it take for you to come back?"
"Around 10 o'clock."
Song Yu returned to her residence to pack some clothes and planned to go to a large supermarket to buy some things. Their school was located in a relatively remote area and there were no large supermarkets with everything around. The nearest large supermarket was about 5 kilometers away. After weighing the options, she took the car keys and decided to drive there.
There were not many people on the road. Most people had gone out to celebrate the holidays. The students who usually hung out the most on this road had also gone home for the holidays. She hadn't driven for a while, so she was driving very slowly. Fortunately, there were not many cars on the road.
She raised her hand and turned on the car stereo, and immediately a melodious saxophone sound rang out. After more than ten seconds, a clear and slightly hoarse male voice followed the music.
The car, which was driving smoothly, suddenly accelerated at a certain moment and then quickly stopped not far away. Song Yu raised his hand to open the window next to him and looked at the tall man walking on the road with a bag on his back. With a smile on his face, he said, "Where are you going? I'll give you a ride."
As soon as he finished speaking, the man opened the car door and got in.
Song Yu was slightly stunned. She hadn't asked him where he was going yet, but since he was already seated, she couldn't kick him out. She turned down the music a bit, and seeing that the man didn't seem to want to talk for a long time, she could only tentatively ask, "Are you going to the supermarket too?"
"Um."
The short words choked Song Yu, "...Okay."
The car drove forward smoothly for a while. During this process, Song Yu would glance at the passenger seat from time to time, so frequently that Xu Qiao couldn't help but glance sideways.
"You..." They spoke at the same time, and both of them were stunned.
"You speak first." Song Yu said.
"You keep looking at me. Shouldn't I be sitting in the passenger seat?" Xu Qiao asked in a somewhat stiff voice. "Does anyone mind?"
“…”
"What did you want to say just now?" Xu Qiao asked.
"...Could you please sit back a little? You're sitting too straight and blocking my view of the rearview mirror."
After a long silence, Song Yu saw the man's body slowly and stiffly move back, and the rearview mirror that had been blocked for a long time finally played its role.
In fact, this time Song Yu let Xu Qiao get in the car for the first time because he wanted to ease the relationship between the two. At the very least, they were partners in the same course, and they would inevitably have to work on final assignments together. It would not be good for both parties if things became awkward.
"Aren't you going home during the holidays?" Song Yu looked up at the man reflected in the mirror and asked. Students who wanted to go home at this time would have already set off long ago, but he was still going to the supermarket at this time.
Perhaps feeling a little embarrassed, Xu Qiao kept tilting his head to look at the scenery outside the window. "I have some experiments to do."
Song Yu understood that it was almost the end of the semester and some unimportant courses were having final exams one after another. Their mathematics courses were so difficult that they must have spent a lot of time studying.
The car was very quiet and Song Yu was not embarrassed. However, Xu Qiao looked a little uneasy. Before she could say anything to comfort Xu Qiao and tell him not to take it to heart, the cell phone beside her rang.
Seeing the video pop up on her phone, her face froze for a moment. "Sorry, I have to stop for a moment."
The scenery that was flashing by quickly outside the car window slowly stopped. Xu Qiao caught a glimpse of a fat orange cat lying on its belly on the side of the road basking in the sun. It was licking its paws leisurely, unaware of the gazes from inside the car resting on it.
"What's the matter?" Will cat fur still be waterproof if it gets wet by licking?
"I'll be back tomorrow. Didn't I ask you to wait for me? Why are you in such a hurry?" There is so much dust on his paws. How could he digest it if he ate it?
"The vacation is several days long. I won't go anywhere and will just stay with you." The cat is so fat, but it doesn't ask for anyone to accompany it.
"What? How can I lie to you every time? Last time was a special case. I was on vacation, not in jail with you." The cat overturned the trash can. Can it be sent to jail?
"I'm driving and don't have time to take care of you now. Can't you be independent for once?" Cats can be independent, but people can't.
"Okay, okay, don't be angry. I promise to let you see me tomorrow, okay? What are you gesturing with your hands? Aren't you tired?" There was an indescribable intimacy in the girl's voice as she coaxed the person on the other end of the video, and she even lowered her posture very low.
Xu Qiao's stiff eyelashes blinked slowly. After a few conversations, his heart had sunk into the abyss.
A pale face was reflected in the car window, and the figure of the person behind him was also clearly visible. He kept taking deep breaths to adjust his mood.
There was no more talking behind him, only the slight friction between the fabrics of his clothes. He maintained this stiff posture for a long time.
It was dark in front of him, and he could not sense anything except the movement behind him. He didn't know how long it was before he heard Song Yu sigh from behind him, "Forget it, I'll find someone to help you."
Then, he felt someone pat his shoulder and a cell phone was handed to him. "Xu Qiao, can you help me with something?"
Xu Qiao closed his eyes tightly, his head tilted toward the car window. Just as he was about to open his eyes, he felt something cold and soft against his face. A slightly anxious voice rang out, "Are you sick? Why are you shaking like this? Your face is covered in sweat."
Then he felt the cold, soft hand withdraw from his face again. "I'm going to hang up now. My classmate seems a little unwell. Save your math problem for now. When the teacher scolds you, just pretend to be deaf. Do you hear me?"
Math problems? Xu Qiao opened his eyes abruptly and lowered his head to meet the gaze of the person on the phone.
She was a girl wearing a school uniform and a high ponytail. Her eyes were clearly black and white and looked very lively. She was curiously looking at Xu Qiao from the other side of the screen. When she saw Xu Qiao open his eyes and look at her, a bright smile immediately appeared on her face, and a canine tooth was faintly visible between her lips and teeth.
She had a smile on her face and made a gesture with her hand that Xu Qiao couldn't understand.
When Song Yu saw Xu Qiao open his eyes, he breathed a sigh of relief and sat back down, "What happened to you just now? You scared me." Looking at Xu Qiao's face, some people would believe that he had just died.
Xu Qiao asked with difficulty, "What question were you talking about?"
"Nothing. My sister came to ask me a math problem. The teacher will ask her about it next class, and she's very anxious. I'm not good at math, so I wanted you to help me."
Xu Qiao took the phone. The girl had already pointed the camera at the question written in black and white on the table. He took a look and saw that it was the type of the last big question of the college entrance examination. Thinking of the girl's unusual behavior just now, he couldn't help but ask, "Your sister..."
"Oh, she had a high fever when she was a child and her throat was damaged. She can't speak, but she can hear. You can just tell her directly, and I'll help you translate on her side."
No wonder Song Yu was the only one talking just now.
"But are you okay?" Song Yu couldn't help but ask. He really scared Xu Qiao when he turned her over just now. There were a few drops of sweat on her forehead, and her face was slightly pale, which made her sharp eyebrows and eyes look as black as ink, as if he had seen her somewhere before.
"It's okay."
Seeing the obvious sympathy and pity on Xu Qiao's face, Song Yu was too embarrassed to say that from the moment he saw his face, the poor girl he thought of had been asking him if he had a girlfriend since he was so handsome.
"What's her name?"
Song Yu came back to his senses and said, "Just call her Yaya."
Xu Qiao nodded, "Yaya, can you hear me?"
The girl showed her face on camera, the excitement on her face unstoppable. With her right hand facing downwards, she extended only her index and middle fingers, and placed her thumb on the side of her index finger, sliding it lightly from left to right. Then she pointed her index finger at Song Yu and then at Xu Qiao, clenched her fists with her thumbs facing each other and bent them slightly, "So handsome, take him down."
Seeing Xu Qiao's serious look as he tilted his head and waited for her to translate, Song Yu smiled guiltily, then made a quick gesture with both hands, "Go and study your math problems. Don't get involved in adult matters."
