The fourth day of the mountain fire.
Yun Xiang was awakened by Hu Nan's crying.
Yunxiang sat on the bed, gazing out the window in a daze. Birds were perched on the willow tree at the door, chirping.
Hu Nan's crying got louder, and Yun Xiang immediately got out of bed. She casually gathered her hair and pushed open the door.
Cheng Che was just walking downstairs, and the two of them stared blankly at Hu Nan who was talking on the phone in the living room.
"Mom?" Cheng Che strode over.
When Hu Nan saw Cheng Che, he was about to fall to the ground.
Yun wanted to rush over, but Cheng Che picked up Hu Nan and helped her sit on the sofa.
Yun Xiang poured a glass of water for Hu Nan.
"What's wrong?" Cheng Che's voice trembled inexplicably, and his heart began to panic.
Hu Nan cried early in the morning, right?
Hu Nan raised her face. She couldn't speak, but kept crying and her voice became hoarse.
"Mom?" Cheng Che called her again, "Did something happen to Dad?"
Yun Xiang noticed the TV in the living room, which was playing the news. Hu Nan had pressed the mute button, so there was no sound at all.
The TV was broadcasting the latest news about the mountain fire. At twelve o'clock in the night, the fire that was about to be extinguished suddenly ignited again.
The firefighters who came to support from all over the country had almost all retreated, and the sudden fire caught the fire brigades, who had not yet had time to retreat, off guard.
The Shenyang Fire Brigade led by Cheng Xiao was among them.
Yun Xiang quickly turned on the sound. The video just happened to cut to a reporter, who choked up and said, "At twelve o'clock at night, the fire broke out again. Our firefighters encountered an accident while extinguishing the fire, and six firefighters are currently missing..."
Yun Xiang instantly tightened his grip on the phone and looked at Hu Nan again.
Hu Nan's phone screen was on, and there were messages of condolence from several friends on WeChat.
Dean Duan: Hu Nan, how's it going? Have you contacted Mr. Cheng?
Director Jiang: I just saw the official list of missing persons. What’s going on, Hu Nan?
Yun Xiang choked up. A list of missing persons appeared on TV.
Cheng Xiao, chief fire commander of Shenyang
Zhang Qijun, Lianyi City Fire Department
Lianyi City Fire Department Officer Peng Guanning
…
Yun Xiang's heart suddenly trembled.
Cheng Che looked at the list of missing persons on TV, and his heart instantly rose to his throat.
At 11:30 at night, Cheng Xiao sent a message in the family group.
Cheng Xiao: The fire is out, nothing serious. A group of firefighters returned today, we'll be back tomorrow.
Cheng Xiao: @Hu Nan, my wife, tomorrow is Sunday, are you going to take a day off? What will you cook for me when you get home?
Cheng Xiao: Oh, this fire was the worst besides the one on October 22. Seeing so many 18-year-olds rushing into the fire, not even daring to cry out, was heartbreaking!
Cheng Xiao: God doesn’t even say it will rain, it’s even more cruel!
Cheng Xiao: Okay, let’s go make a summary. We’ll talk again tomorrow when I get home.
He sent many messages, but no one even replied to him.
Hu Nan's phone rang again.
Hu Nan stood up immediately. The person who called was Cheng Xiao's subordinate.
Hu Nan tremblingly pressed the answer button. She put the phone to her ear and asked anxiously, "Xiao Liu, have you found our Lao Cheng?"
There was silence on the other end of the line.
After a long while, he choked up and said, "Sister-in-law, the commander has not been found yet..."
"Keep looking, keep looking." Hu Nan's voice trembled.
Xiao Liu: "Sister-in-law, we've been out of contact with the commander for five hours. The higher-ups...the higher-ups told me..."
Xiao Liu didn't finish the words that were on the tip of his tongue.
Hu Nan already knew what he was going to say.
This is a call from above, which means that Cheng Xiao...
"Look for it!" Hu Nan completely collapsed. This one word carried all her emotions.
Xiao Liu: "Yes! Sister-in-law, let's go find the commander right away!"
After the phone call was hung up, Hu Nan's body trembled and he began to stagger.
Her hands rested on the back of the sofa, and Cheng Che hugged Hu Nan.
The corners of Cheng Che's eyes were red. He looked at his mother and said softly, "Mom, I'll take you back to your room first."
"Xiao Che..." Hu Nan's tears kept falling.
"It's okay, nothing will happen." Cheng Che comforted Hu Nan.
He looked calm, but his words were trembling.
It felt like thousands of ants were gnawing at his heart, making it impossible for him to find peace.
Hu Nan couldn't bear the shock and passed out.
Cheng Che was really confused now, "Mom!"
…
Hospital, in the ward.
It was already night when Hu Nan woke up.
Cheng Che and Yun Xiang quietly accompanied him on both sides of the bed.
The TV continued to broadcast news about the fire in the mountains.
Hu Nan opened his eyes and asked weakly, "Cheng Xiao..."
Cheng Che lowered his head, his heart choking with sobs.
Yun Xiang held Hu Nan's arm tightly, her almond-shaped eyes were swollen from crying, so beautiful.
Hu Nan closed his eyes, tears immediately dripping from the corners of his eyes. The tears slid into his ears, and Hu Nan collapsed, "Oh my God..."
"God, please make it rain."
She raised her hand, covering half of her face with her arm. Her voice was exceptionally soft, so soft that it seemed to be blown away by a gust of wind.
When Yun Xiang heard this, tears suddenly fell from her eyes.
She hated her own sensitive empathy.
Cheng Che frowned, breathing heavily. Unable to bear it any longer, he stood up and walked out.
"Cheng Che." Yun wanted to call him.
He shook his head and said it was okay, but tears fell from the corners of his eyes.
