Side Story: Shi Lisheng and Little Stone 3

Shi Lisheng held the copper coin in his hand, feeling an extraordinary warmth.

"Brother Feng, wait for me a moment."

After she finished speaking, she ran into the house.

Gu Mofeng didn't know what she was going to do, but he remembered his younger sister's instructions.

He turned around, picked up a hoe, and turned over the vegetable garden in the yard.

They also took the opportunity to do some minor repairs on the dilapidated door.

After he finished doing all this, and before Shi Lisheng came out, he called out twice into the house.

Then it was seen that Shi Lisheng's hands were covered in mud, but his face was full of smiles.

She ran out happily and handed a small wooden box to Gu Mofeng.

"Brother Feng, please give this to Sister Xin as a wedding gift."

Gu Mofeng looked at the dirty little wooden box without any disgust, took it, said goodbye, and left the courtyard.

As soon as he left, Shi Lisheng took out the small stones from the cloth bag.

"Come out and get some fresh air, you must be feeling really cooped up these past few days."

The moment Little Stone came out, he didn't go to enjoy the fresh air.

Instead, he looked at her and asked with a puzzled expression.

"Sheng Sheng, didn't you say that the jade pendant in that box was part of your dowry left by your mother-in-law? How come it was just given away like that?"

Upon hearing this, Shi Lisheng felt there was no problem at all.

"Anyway, it's part of the dowry, so it's good to give it to Sister Xin as part of her dowry. Besides, she's been so good to me, so I want to give her the best."

Seeing how open-minded she was, Little Stone didn't say anything more.

"Okay, as long as you're happy."

"Yes, I'm very happy. My mother-in-law said that cause and effect are interconnected. You should remember and repay the kindness others have shown you, otherwise you will owe them in your next life."

Little Stone couldn't help but admire how well Shi Lisheng's mother-in-law had raised her.

For such a young child to live independently for so long and keep the house so tidy is remarkable.

Let alone a six-year-old child, even an adult might not be as capable as her at doing chores.

While Shi Lisheng happily ate her food, Gu Moxin stared at the jade pendant in her hand with an expression of disbelief.

"Brother, did Sheng Sheng really ask you to give this to me?"

The moment the small wooden box was opened, Gu Mofeng was stunned.

"Yeah, she wouldn't be stupid enough to give you her family heirloom, would she?"

After exchanging a glance, the brother and sister confirmed this statement.

Just as he was about to return it, Li Zheng called him to attention.

It was suggested that Gu Moxin visit her maternal grandmother's house before her marriage, with Gu Mofeng accompanying her.

Therefore, the two of them could only wait until they returned to go and return it.

Unfortunately, war broke out at this time as well.

The brother and sister were trapped at their grandmother's house and couldn't return home in time; everyone in the village who could escape had already fled.

Only Shi Lisheng, with Little Stone, was still foolishly waiting for Gu Moxin's wedding candy.

When she was the only one left in the entire village, she was met with the cold iron hooves of death.

She managed to escape crisis after crisis with Little Stone.

But wars in the era of cold weapons don't end so quickly.

Even at this point, Shi Lisheng was still feeling fortunate.

Fortunately, the family's belongings and food were stolen by people from the same village.

If these enemy troops were to seize it, she would feel ashamed before her ancestors.

After listening, Little Stone wanted to call her silly, but then he thought about it and realized she wasn't wrong.

Who would want their precious possessions to be taken away by traitors who invade their country?

Thinking about it this way, it seems he didn't dislike those villagers that much after all.

The agonizing days passed one by one, and Shi Lisheng went from eating coarse noodles at the beginning to wild vegetables later on.

Then came the tree bark, and finally the yellow soil in my hand.

Little Stone looked at the yellow soil she was offering to her mouth and couldn't help but feel worried.

"Sheng Sheng, is this really edible?"

Shi Lisheng didn't know either, but seeing that the other refugees were eating, she thought that she should be able to eat too.

"Okay, it's a good thing you're a stone and only need to soak in water, you don't need to eat anything, otherwise you'd be eating dirt with me!"

"Sheng Sheng?"

As soon as she finished speaking, she heard a familiar voice.

Turning his head, he saw Gu Mofeng watching him from not far away.

Then, Shi Lisheng, supporting her emaciated body, swayed and ran towards him.

"Brother Feng, you're back! Where's Sister Xin? Is she married?"

Seeing her weak and listless appearance, Gu Mofeng quickly took her to a secluded place.

He took a coarse cornbread from his bundle and held it to her mouth.

"Eat quickly, we'll talk after you finish eating."

Shi Lisheng was also extremely hungry, and without even saying thank you, he started eating the cornbread.

After she finished eating, Gu Mofeng told her...

Originally, he and Gu Moxin had been taken by their maternal grandmother to their maternal uncle's house in the prefectural city for refuge.

But the war was getting more and more intense, and the two of them were worried about the village head every day, so much so that they couldn't eat or sleep.

After discussing it, he returned alone to search.

After listening to his story, Shi Lisheng slowly nodded.

"The village head and the village chief left a long time ago, so they should be safe now. Don't worry, brother."

Upon hearing this, Gu Mofeng's tense emotions eased slightly.

"Then why didn't you go with them?"

Upon hearing this, Shi Lisheng smiled.

"I have no food or money, and I'm short and can't walk fast, so I won't go along and slow everyone down."

As soon as he finished speaking, Gu Mofeng understood the meaning behind his words.

Even in times of peace, beggars might not be able to get a full meal every day.

Moreover, it is currently a time of war, and if Shi Lisheng had gone with them back then...

They would either be abandoned or starve to death, or perhaps even sold into slavery.

Rather than that, it's better to stay in the village and take a gamble.

Gu Mofeng looked at the tiny child in front of him, his eyes filled with heartache.
