No sooner had the two brothers left than Pan Cuiping turned around and tiptoed into her younger son's room.
The room was quiet. The daughter-in-law and granddaughter were fast asleep in bed, their even breathing sounds particularly clear in the still night.
By the faint moonlight streaming in through the window, Pan Cuiping gazed at her daughter-in-law's peaceful sleeping face, then at her granddaughter's rosy cheeks. A smile involuntarily crept onto her lips before she carefully left the room and tiptoed back to her own.
"Cuiping, where did you go? I couldn't see you in the blink of an eye."
After delivering the things to Old Lady Liu, Yu Dazhu looked around the house and couldn't find his wife, so he asked her.
"I just went to the second son's room to see if his wife was awake and if she needed any help."
As Pan Cuiping spoke, she picked up the shoe soles placed on the bedside table and began to sew them.
She always felt that the shoes she bought were not as comfortable and reliable as the cloth shoes she made herself, stitch by stitch.
Whenever she has free time in the evenings, she makes cloth shoes.
Back in the day, she made almost all the cloth shoes; her second and third sons' wives didn't know how to make them at all.
The second son's wife would occasionally cook, but the third son's wife was simply too lazy to do anything.
"Oh, where did the eldest and second eldest go?"
Why isn't anyone home?
When Yu Dazhu returned, he didn't see his two sons, which made him a little suspicious.
I wondered if they went fishing so late at night. But I couldn't believe it; didn't the two of them go out to catch fish this afternoon?
"They went to the village chief's house, acting all mysterious, I don't know what they were doing!"
But I reckon something must have happened, otherwise why would they bring so much stuff over there?
Pan Cuiping muttered to herself as she sewed the shoe soles.
"What did you take?"
Didn't you even ask those two brothers what they were doing at the village chief's house so late at night?
Yu Dazhu didn't pay much attention, and just asked with a casual smile.
"I asked, of course I asked!"
But both of them were like silent gourds, never saying a word.
The second child said he would tell us when he got back.
As Pan Cuiping spoke, her hands continued to move, the needle darting through the sole of the shoe, making a "plop plop" sound.
“Since your son has said so, don’t worry about it. You’ll know what happened when they get back,” Yu Dazhu said with a smile.
"That's true. We've all seen the changes in the second son, so we don't need to worry about him too much."
Honey, let's not talk about this anymore, go take a shower!
"I smell bad!"
As Pan Cuiping spoke, she wrinkled her nose and smelled the sour smell of her husband's sweat.
"Does it smell that strong?" Yu Dazhu asked cheerfully, and subconsciously fanned the area under his nose with his hand.
"Can't you smell it yourself to see if it's there or not?"
Would I lie to you?
Go take a shower!
"When the eldest and second sons come back, they'll need to take a bath too." Pan Cuiping glared at her husband, then couldn't help but smile.
Yu Dazhu actually bent down, picked up his clothes, and sniffed them. "Hey, my wife is right, these clothes really do smell quite a bit."
I'm going to take a shower now.
After saying that, he walked to the wardrobe, found a change of clothes, and went to the backyard.
Thinking to myself, if I don't wash myself soon, I'll really become the stinky man that women talk about.
On the other side, the Yu brothers, carrying their belongings, walked along the dirt road in the village, their steps uneven, towards the village chief's house.
Moonlight spilled onto the dirt road, casting long shadows of the two people.
Village chief Zhou Jianguo was sitting in his house when he heard footsteps coming from the courtyard.
Looking up, he saw the Yu brothers, Chengyuan and Ping'an, arriving together with some things. He couldn't help but wonder: what's going on now?
However, he quickly called out into the house, "Qiu Mei, come out and make tea, the Yu brothers are here."
Upon hearing her husband's voice, Hao Qiumei hurriedly came out from the inner room, warmly inviting the two brothers to sit down while quickly preparing tea.
The Yu brothers greeted each other politely in unison, "Hello, Uncle Zhou! Hello, Aunt Zhou!"
"Chengyuan, Ping'an, please sit down."
Next time you come, just come, don't bring so much stuff, it makes us feel too distant!
You can't do that again next time!
Although your lives are much better than before, you shouldn't waste money on things you shouldn't.
Zhou Jianguo said politely.
People are not well-off now, so they still value these things.
"Uncle Zhou, it's nothing special, just something we juniors would like to give to you as our elder."
Please don't stand on ceremony with us.
This pack of cigarettes is for you too.
As Yu Chengyuan spoke, he placed the items on the table, then took out a pack of Hongmei cigarettes from his pocket, gently placed it on the table, and pushed it in front of the village chief.
"You little rascal, do you have something you need me to do?"
Don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.
Zhou Jianguo asked with a chuckle.
In his mind, sending such an expensive gift must mean more than just a casual visit.
"Uncle Zhou, you really know my brother inside and out, how did you know?" Yu Pingan couldn't help but ask when he heard this.
"Hahaha... Ping An, I don't want to be a tapeworm in your brother's stomach."
"Look at you two, coming over to get so much stuff, both brothers together, making such a big fuss. You definitely didn't just come to visit after dinner."
Zhou Jianguo burst into laughter, his hearty laughter echoing throughout the room.
Yu Pingan scratched the back of his head and chuckled, "Uncle Zhou is right."
Yu Chengyuan took a sip of tea and said with a smile, "Look at what the village chief is saying, can't my brother and I just come over for a visit if there's nothing wrong?"
