Sang Wenyin frowned, not understanding what was going on, but she still followed his instructions and handed it over with her left hand.
Doctor Zhang held his breath and concentrated again, placing his three fingers on the Cun, Guan and Chi points of the wrist again.
This time, he felt more carefully, and the force under his fingers was accompanied by an imperceptible tremor.
The pulse was smooth like a pearl, vigorous and even clearer than before!
Pregnancy pulse!
Absolutely correct!
Doctor Zhang's expression instantly became extremely strange. He raised his head, and his gaze was no longer that of a peaceful doctor. Instead, it was filled with an indescribable complex scrutiny as he looked back and forth at Jiang Jinzhao and Sang Wenyin in front of him!
What the hell is this?!
The Crown Prince's Consort of the Yongding Marquis's Mansion is pregnant before she even gets married...?
But this child... is it the prince's? The prince's broken arm injury has only been there for a month!
Judging from the pulse, the fetus in the belly has been formed for at least several months!
The timing doesn't match at all!
Whose child is this?!
Doctor Zhang opened his mouth, his throat feeling like it was choked with a scalding iron. He wanted to speak, to ask, "When did this happen?" But before he could speak, he was met with Sang Wenyin's youthful, beautiful, yet worldly-wise face, and the gentle, smiling eyes of the Marquis of Yongding's wife...
I can't utter a single word of these words!
All eyes in the hall were focused on Doctor Zhang's face, which looked as if he had been struck by lightning.
The smile on Mrs. Sang's face was like thin ice in winter, shattering and disappearing quickly bit by bit.
She knew these senior doctors too well.
Don't even think about making them lose their composure like this with just a trivial matter. Doctor Zhang doesn't look like he's diagnosing any minor illness. It's obvious that he's encountered a huge problem, or even a hidden illness?
A bone-chilling panic instantly shot up from the soles of his feet and rushed straight to the top of his head.
Mrs. Sang felt her vision go dark, and her fingers, which were holding the back of the chair, were so tight that her knuckles turned white.
She stared at Doctor Zhang's hesitant expression, forcing herself to maintain a last bit of composure and dignity, but her voice couldn't help but tremble slightly.
"Doctor Zhang? My Wenyin...what happened to her?"
Xu sat at the head of the table, her expression still gentle.
Jiang Jinzhao sat below his mother, his face calm, except for the occasional glance across at the opposite side that showed a hint of deep thought.
Mrs. Sang pretended to be calm as she sat in the guest seat, feeling a little anxious, her eyes glued to Doctor Zhang who was sitting in the middle of the room taking her pulse.
Sang Wenyin sat on a brocade stool specially used for pulse diagnosis, with her slender wrist resting on the pulse pillow covered with plain brocade.
Doctor Zhang took the patient's pulse with three fingers, his expression even more solemn and focused than usual. After one examination, he said nothing, merely furrowing his graying brows, concentrating and holding his breath. He shifted his angle and pressed his fingertips down again.
Time seemed to stand still, and the only sounds that could be heard were the extremely light breathing sounds of Doctor Zhang and the soft sounds of the chopsticks stirring in the incense burner.
Sang Wenyin's patience was quickly exhausted as Doctor Zhang's fingertips were reluctant to move away.
She has been a pampered daughter since she was young. How could she have ever been "scrutinized" like this by a foreign man?
She suddenly pulled her arm back from the pulse pillow with such speed that it created a gust of wind.
Her pretty face was filled with undisguised disdain and anger. "Doctor Zhang! You've been practicing medicine for most of your life, and yet it takes you this long to check a normal pulse? Is there something wrong with my body that requires you to toss and turn and massage me for an entire hour?"
She emphasized the word "knead" very strongly, and it was filled with a disgusting feeling of being insulted.
After this veiled rebuke, even though Doctor Zhang was well-mannered, the calmness on his face instantly disappeared.
He has been practicing medicine for decades, and he has never been humiliated in person like this even after kneeling three times and kowtowing nine times before the emperor, and what's more, he was used to make such outrageous assumptions!
Doctor Zhang stood up suddenly.
He no longer glanced at Sang Wenyin, as if she were some dirty thing. He turned directly to Xu Shi, who was sitting in the main seat, and Jiang Jinzhao, whose face was slightly gloomy. He clasped his hands together and spoke in a clear, cold voice, echoing throughout the silent study:
"I dare not delay the Crown Prince's wife's recuperation! This diagnosis can be stopped!"
He paused, his eyes swept over Sang Wenyin, and with undisguised sarcasm, his voice suddenly rose, like a thunderclap:
"Congratulations, Madam! Congratulations, Prince! I've been practicing medicine for fifty years, and I can't be wrong about this slippery pulse! The health of the baby in Madam's womb is a great joy! Please forgive my lack of skills and the difficulty in ensuring everything is perfect. Farewell!"
He kept calling everyone "Madam Crown Prince", "Lin'er" and "happy event", like a loud slap in the face of everyone present!
"You old bastard! What nonsense are you talking about?!"
Mrs. Sang jumped up suddenly as if she was splashed with boiling oil.
His face turned from white to blue and then to purple, his facial features distorted by extreme rage and fear.
Her whole body was shaking. She pointed at Doctor Zhang's nose and said in a shrill voice:
"My daughter Wenyin is innocent and unmarried. You are maliciously slandering her! You are insulting my daughter's reputation! You are destroying the reputation of our Sang family! You are ruthless! Our Sang family will never stop fighting you!"
The soft veil on Xu's face that maintained its warmth throughout the entire scene shattered into pieces the moment Doctor Zhang finished speaking.
The gentleness in her eyes was completely frozen, turning into two cold rays as sharp as knife blades, which suddenly shot towards Sang Wenyin, who had already been stunned.
Before Madam Sang could finish her shrewish rant, Madam Xu's icy voice came down like a verdict:
"Doctor Zhang, please be careful with your words! Our Yongding Marquisate has strict rules and a clean family tradition! The Crown Prince has been seriously injured for over a month and has not recovered yet! We have never done anything that would damage our reputation!"
Her gaze was like an ice spike piercing the trembling Sang Wenyin. "Miss Sang and my son may be married in name only, but we haven't yet accepted the betrothal gifts or performed the six rituals! Without a matchmaker or an engagement, how can we be called 'Madam'? How can we be called 'Lin'?"
