The two heavy black lacquered doors of the Sang Mansion slammed shut behind her with a dull thud, shaking Sang Wenyin all over.
She staggered a few steps due to the force, and her heel caught on the edge of the cold bluestone steps outside the mansion gate, and she almost fell down.
Liao Lingxi beside her hurriedly supported her, his arms shaking a little, and the scholar's shirt that was originally bright and shiny was now gray and wrinkled on his body.
"It's okay, Wenyin." Liao Lingxi's voice was low, with imperceptible fatigue.
Sang Wenyin bit her lower lip hard to prevent the sob of humiliation from coming out.
Tears smeared her face, and her originally delicate makeup was completely ruined, covered with dust, and looked disheveled.
Her body was stiff, not because of the cold wind at the steps, but because of the dark crowd that had not yet dispersed at the steps in front of the mansion.
The gazes of the onlookers were like whips dipped in salt, lashing her exposed wounds with fiery pain.
In the chaos, the place on the outskirts of the crowd stood out.
A large horse-drawn carriage painted with clear oil was parked there steadily, and the outer wall of the carriage faintly revealed luxurious cloud patterns.
Several figures stood in front of the car. Jiang Songyi was dressed in a light blue brocade dress that made her skin look whiter than snow. She had her hair in the most exquisite bun of the time, and a phoenix hairpin with kingfisher feathers and pearls was embedded in her hair.
Standing on her left and right were Jiang Qingmo and Bai Linxi, both of whom were carefully dressed up like ladies from noble families.
Behind him, there were four or five tall and strong servants standing with their hands hanging down.
They didn't move forward, but just watched quietly, as if they were watching a street farce that had nothing to do with them.
Sang Wenyin's blood rushed to her head with a buzzing sound.
It's them!
Her most unbearable side, the miserable state of being driven out of the house like a stray dog, was seen by them from beginning to end!
Sang Wenyin suddenly broke free from Liao Lingxi's hand, almost stumbling through the crowd blocking her way and rushed towards the group of people.
"Jiang Songyi——!" A hoarse scream tore through the crowd of onlookers.
Sang Wenyin panted heavily and stopped less than two steps away from the carriage. Her hair was disheveled and her bloodshot eyes were fixed on Jiang Songyi's overly calm face. "Are you laughing at me? Are you happy to see me kicked out by my father? Are you satisfied? You all came here to see me make a fool of myself, right?"
Liao Lingxi was a little confused at first.
He hurried over after Sang Wenyin, his breathing equally unsteady. Hearing Sang Wenyin's harsh questioning of the elegant girl, he belatedly raised his eyes and took a closer look at the blue-dressed girl surrounded by people in front of the carriage.
That face... the outline of the eyebrows and eyes, vaguely familiar?
His heart moved, and he couldn't help but tentatively call out softly with a vague tone that was seven parts tentative and three parts deliberately trying to get close to her, "Sister Songyi?"
The corners of Jiang Songyi's mouth did not move at all, only her eyelashes drooped slightly, and her cold eyes were like the first layer of frost in early winter, suddenly piercing Liao Lingxi.
Liao Lingxi's heart sank suddenly.
Before he could react, Xiang Zhu, the serious-looking maidservant beside Jiang Songyi, stepped forward.
"How dare you! Where did this crazy village woman come from? How dare you address my county lady by her first name and call her sister? Are you blind? This is the Jiaqing County Lady, personally appointed by the emperor! How rude of you! Why don't you pay your respects immediately!"
County Lady?
These two words were like two clubs, hitting Sang Wenyin and Liao Lingxi hard on the head.
No! This is impossible!
"Shut up! Who do you think you are? You're not the one to lecture me! So what if I'm the county lady? I'm no one's maid! My father was just angry! Wait for my husband..." Sang Wenyin suddenly grabbed the arm of Liao Lingxi, who was standing there like a dumbfounded chicken. "Wait until my husband passes the imperial examination, and then father will come to take me back personally! I, Sang Wenyin, will always be the eldest daughter of the Sang family!"
When Liao Lingxi heard Xiang Zhu call her "Princess Jiaqing County", the remaining color on his face had already faded away.
A county lady? The adopted sister of the Jiang family whom he had once considered a burden? She had risen to the top in a single stroke, becoming a county lady appointed by the emperor? He had just been so reckless as to call her "sister"!
He didn't even dare to look at Jiang Songyi again. That cold look confirmed everything.
Liao Lingxi shuddered suddenly and bent down deeply almost as if by reflex: "Please forgive me, my lady! Please forgive me, my lady! I was blind and offended you! Let's go now! Let's go now!"
He hurriedly pulled Sang Wenyin again, as anxious as a mouse with its tail on fire: "Go! Wenyin! Stop talking!"
Sang Wenyin was pulled hard by him and staggered for a while before she could barely stand.
Her pale face showed only panic and confusion. She was half-dragged and half-pulled by Liao Lingxi, pushing away the wall of onlookers behind her and fleeing in a panic.
"Pfft..." An undisguised sneer sounded.
Jiang Qingmo looked at the two figures that disappeared around the corner like lost dogs, and covered his lips with disgust with a brocade handkerchief embroidered with butterflies, his eyes filled with contempt.
"Oh, look, this is the man Miss Sang is fighting so hard to marry? She's always so arrogant at those boudoir banquets, but she ended up settling for a loser like this who just collapses when faced with difficulties? Tsk, her eye for choosing a man is truly discerning. It's no wonder she kept saying she wanted to be a 'sister-in-law'."
Bai Linxi's fingers unconsciously twisted the tip of the soft whip wrapped with silver threads hanging from his waist. He looked at the direction where the two figures disappeared, smacking his lips with some regret. His eyes were like a bird of prey that had set its sights on its prey and then ran away.
"What a pity, he ran away so quickly." She curled her lips. "I thought, just based on Liao Lingxi's ungrateful face and those disgusting words he just said, he should have been whipped. A man like him, how can he remember the pain without a beating?"
