The Liu family.
Liu Quan's wife threw a tantrum at home.
"Quan, can you go to town and find some work?"
Liu Quan glared fiercely at the woman and shouted angrily, "Woman, you're so short-sighted! Do you know what I'm doing?"
The woman cried and complained, "I was so blind! You've done nothing but crap. Ever since you came back from Qingxia Village two months ago, you haven't done any work in the fields."
He even stopped going to work in town.
"Wandering around the village all day, what's the difference between him and those street urchins?"
"Even if you go to town and find a job carrying bricks, you can earn twenty or thirty yuan a day, right?"
I think you're just lazy!
The woman cried and wept.
There were two children, one older and one younger, staring blankly at the two of them.
The other neighbors were all pointing and whispering.
"A perfectly healthy, strong man just lounges around at home all day, and I can't even afford to support my kids. Aren't you ashamed? Bah!"
“You guys don’t know what’s going on here.”
One of the people who had gone to Qingxia Village with him to look for work was speaking mysteriously.
"Shut up."
Liu Quan glared fiercely at the man.
He then closed the door, lowered his voice, put his hand on his wife's shoulder, and stared at her with a fierce look in his eyes:
"I don't blame you for not knowing what's going on here. Just wait and see. There are still two days left this month, and two months is long enough..."
I'll go find that person the day after tomorrow and ask him to arrange some work for me. As for the wages!
Liu Quan retorted, "A bunch of blabbermouths, how could they possibly know my ambitions?"
His gaze was deep and thoughtful, then he clenched his fists.
"A person cannot lie on the ground forever!"
It can never be like a lump of mud plastered on the ground!
I want to live a life of boundless glory, eating meat and drinking alcohol every day, instead of living a frugal life and foraging for food in the fields!
I will gradually... become that person's confidant, his lackey.
The woman looked at him as if he were a fool.
"Honey, there's no more flour in the jar..."
In short, Liu Quan was hunched over.
"Okay, I'll go and borrow from each house."
It's like a man full of ambition being suddenly told: "Give me back my money."
It was like a ball that was punctured with a needle and thread.
It deflated.
Creak!
The man's voice outside sounded somewhat familiar.
"Grandpa, where is the Liu family?"
Liu Quan stood there, somewhat dazed.
...
The woman held her child and looked at Chen Xian with a puzzled expression.
Liu Quan scolded her a few times and sent her to the kitchen: "Go, go, go, wife, go make some tea."
Tea is just plain boiled water.
Chen Xian looked around at the earthen walls and saw several low stools made of tree roots inside the house.
The light was dim, and the ground beneath his feet was greasy and solid. He took out a copper coin from his pocket.
With apologies.
"We agreed before that you would work for me, but I'm too busy with my business and can't find the time right now. Here's two months' wages."
Liu Quan trembled, wanting to refuse, but then he remembered what his wife had just said about not having any noodles at home.
The measures taken to deal with the locust plague in Hongye Village were not as effective as those in Qingxia Village, resulting in a significant loss of grain harvest.
I counted them and was slightly taken aback.
Some loose silver coins, and quite a few scattered copper coins.
I have a little over one tael of silver.
"this?"
"Didn't we agree before that I'd pay you ten coins a day to keep an eye on that person?"
Chen Xian waved his hand: "Consider the rest as a reward."
He had heard from the villagers about what had just happened; his family had been arguing quite a bit lately.
Liu Quan wandered around the village every day, never doing any work, and swallowed a lot of sarcastic remarks.
Consider it a loss of mental well-being.
I was inclined to decline.
Chen Xian waved his hand, saying he wasn't the kind of stingy capitalist.
"Is Boss You being quite well-behaved lately?"
"Yes, he must have been terrified by Boss Chen. He's been working diligently in the fields and has even left the purchasing in town to his wife. He's practically shut himself off at home."
"That's good."
Chen Xian: "Pack your things and come back to the city with me. I have something important to ask you to do. I don't know if you dare to do it?"
Following the manners of the ancients, Liu Quan suddenly stood up, cupped his hands, and calmly said, "I will obey your orders, boss, even if it means going through fire and water."
Chen Xian smiled and looked at him calmly: "How about this, you have your wife pack her things and bring the two children with you, and come into the city with me."
Liu Quan's pupils contracted slightly, and suddenly cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
"Yes. But in case something happens to me, please take care of my wife and child..."
Let's do it; fortune favors the bold.
Chen Xian seemed to sense the other person's worry.
He gave a strange smile: "I don't like women. That's an unlucky saying."
He comforted her, saying, "Don't worry, I won't ask you to kill anyone. I'll just ask you to go to the prison cell and talk to someone, to play the role of a caring older brother. There will be no bloodshed."
After saying this, Liu Quan was still shaken, and his expression softened slightly.
"Okay, boss."
After Chen Xian left, the simple-minded wife saw the loose silver coins laid out on the table, her eyes narrowed slightly, and she asked in astonishment, "Who is this? Where did such a wealthy person come from?"
Liu Quan sat in a chair, leaning against the wall, and said in a low voice, "This is my boss. He wants me to do something dangerous. What do you think, should I go or not?"
The silly wife chuckled and said, "Of course we'll go! Where else can you find such a good deal when you're so generous?"
"Losing your head?"
Liu Quan waved his hand and said, "It's not that bad..."
That's about right.
The woman smiled and said, "As long as you don't risk your life, you can work like an ox for people. Just think about it, you wander around the village and they're willing to pay you so much."
