Chapter 18 Commendation Conference

Under the banyan tree, Chen Xian quietly gazed around.

A group of people were under the tree.

They looked at each other.

"Uncle Gui, where is he? Where is he?"

They all bypassed Chen Xian.

Chen Xian: "?"

Chen Gui coughed lightly, somewhat embarrassed, "It's Brother Xian!"

Zhang Daguang nodded and chuckled, "Oh, it's him! Hmm? Chen Xian? Impossible!"

His expression then froze as if suddenly.

The smile on his face came to an abrupt end.

Like a hen whose neck has been suddenly gripped tightly, its eyeballs bulge out.

As the doubts arose, Granny Jia also sneered, "This joke isn't funny at all."

Chen Guigang was about to reprimand him.

Uncle Chen stepped forward and angrily rebuked, "Da Guang, just because you're not good enough doesn't mean my Xian-ge isn't good enough. How come you don't even take the old village head's words seriously now?"

After confronting the guilty-looking Zhang Daguang, the old woman from the Jia family quietly moved back.

Uncle Chen sneered a few more times.

"Granny Jia, it's always people like you who love to make sarcastic remarks. I think the whole atmosphere of Qingxia Village is spoiled by people like you."

Seeing the Jia family's several teenagers eager to try, and the Jia family's daughter looking indignant, she started to argue again.

"Look at this, this is the example you set for the children. Aren't you afraid that all the children will follow your example? In our village, people with bad intentions will be cursed sooner or later. You're a piece of trash."

Originally, Uncle Chen was chatting with Old Song in the crowd, occasionally chuckling and clicking his tongue. When he heard Chen Gui speak, he thought he had misheard.

First came the unexpected, then the great joy.

After a moment of reflection, he thought to himself that this kid had finally taken on the responsibility of the family and had done such a great thing for the village without making a sound. Just as he was about to grin, he heard someone making sarcastic remarks.

Although it's not entirely clear how Chen Xian came up with the idea, how could he tolerate someone smearing his nephew?

The entire audience fell silent.

Uncle Chen stood with his hands behind his back, looking nonchalant, as if he had done something insignificant.

After greeting everyone, he said unhappily, "The meeting has been ruined. I'm going back to herd cattle, Qingshan."

He finished his business and left without a second thought.

Silence reigned.

Chen Gui grinned; the old man was still as irritable as ever.

He coldly swept his gaze across the crowd and rebuked, "From now on, I will not allow anyone in Qingxia Village to say a bad word about Chen Xian behind his back. He is the benefactor of all the villagers in Qingxia Village. Such wild speculation is ungrateful."

"Regardless of his past, he is good now. Anyone who violates this rule will be expelled from the family register!"

The villagers fell silent.

Being expelled from the family genealogy is an extremely severe punishment, and villagers who rely on their families for protection find it very difficult to survive on their own.

Sister Guihua beamed and moved closer to Chen Xian: "Oh my, Da Zhu's father, you are truly remarkable. I don't know what you were thinking. In previous years, when there was a drought, why didn't anyone mention it?"

After saying that, he looked very distressed and took out a handful of purslane from the horse's basket.

"I just picked this from the field, it's so fresh. Steam it, mix it with flour, sprinkle it with garlic sauce, and the taste is absolutely delicious."

The green wild vegetables, glistening with dew, looked incredibly fresh.

Chen Xian waved his hand, "No, I still have some at home."

Every farmer is struggling.

Da Cheng's mother quickly pulled out a handful of wild mushrooms, thinking to herself as she did so.

Guihua is really something. She gave Chen Xian the first gift because she wanted to make a good impression on him, but it makes us look like we're not good people, like we're ungrateful.

Dog Egg's mother also came over and said, "Dad Dazhu, I still have a lot of wild wood ear mushrooms at home. I'll get some for you when I get home later. You can use them to make wild vegetable soup and sprinkle them with cilantro. They're so delicious you'll want to swallow your tongue."

Whether it was genuine or not, Chen Xian felt the villagers' enthusiasm.

Of course, some people were caught looking pained, even though the gifts were indeed given out.

Before long, there were more than a dozen eggs, wood ear fungus, mushrooms, artemisia, mugwort leaves, and so on in front of Chen Xian.

Judge by actions, not intentions.

Chen Xian said loudly, "Everyone has their difficulties. Take it back and let's get through this first."

Summon Chen Qingshan.

Let him persuade the enthusiastic villagers.

After some polite back and forth, it finally came to an end.

The atmosphere was lively, and flattering words were thrown at Chen Xian as if they were free.

"Dad Dazhu will definitely live to be ninety-nine."

“I see that Da Zhu’s father has a high nose bridge and thick, long ears. He will surely have many children and grandchildren in the future. He is a blessed man.”

Chen Xian: Thank you. I'm only thirty-five, but it feels like I've already entered old age ahead of schedule.

I watched my uncle leave.

Chen Xian stood on the high platform and said gently, "Those who know my uncle well know that he has no bad intentions. If he said anything unpleasant just now, I apologize on his behalf. Please don't take it to heart."

Zhang Daguang muttered, "Look, he's sold out again. He wants the good reputation, but he'll take the bad one."

Chen Xian suddenly changed the subject, looking at Zhang Daguang who had been muttering to himself.

His tone was low and weak, even pleading, "I don't think I've offended anyone in the village, so why do people keep thinking ill of me? I guess it must be because I haven't done something right. I might... not be able to concentrate on solving problems for everyone anymore."

"I apologize, everyone."

After saying that, he staggered down from the platform as if he had suddenly become drunk.

Chen Dazhu, not understanding what was going on, quickly went forward to help.

"father!"

Chen Erzhu watched Chen Xian's steps and thought to himself, "Dad didn't drink either. Besides, there's hardly any money left in the house, so there's no money to buy anything."

As if suddenly enlightened, he roared, "Father, the idea you spent three days and three nights coming up with is being maliciously speculated about like this. I feel so sorry for you!"
