Chapter 23 Eating Braised Pork

The group returned home.

The Chen family.

Cuihua was making buckwheat pancakes in the kitchen, while Sanniu was tending the fire.

Si Niu was also helping out. She didn't know how, so she would get up and stand up, peer out from the gate, hop back, and then chop firewood in the yard.

Cuihua laughed and said, "Siniu, stop running. You'll get all sweaty."

Looking at the sun, I figured they'd be back soon.

Quickly start stir-frying the dandelion and shiitake mushrooms.

Si Niu's face was flushed, and her forehead was covered with fine beads of sweat: "I know, sister-in-law, but I'm just anxious and can't control myself."

Chen Xian's voice carried into the courtyard.

"father!"

Si Niu, like a husky, ran quickly to Chen Xian and charged at him like a dog.

The little girl's head suddenly bumped into Chen Xian's abdomen.

Chen Xian almost died on the spot: "..."

The little girl's delicate nose twitched as she sniffed around, asking suspiciously, "Candy? What's that? It smells so good."

Chen Xian took it out and handed it over, saying, "Here you go."

A look of surprise appeared on the little girl's face.

"Dad, I know this. Is this brittle candy? Dog Egg showed it off to me before. Wow, there's also candied hawthorn."

Just as I reached out to take it, I suddenly seemed to remember something.

He ran to the kitchen and started calling out, "Sister-in-law, San Niu, this is for you. The rest is for Dad, my eldest brother, my second brother, and my aunts."

The principle of fairness for each individual was fully utilized.

Looking at the remaining crispy candy and candied hawthorns, the little girl's head was filled with big question marks.

Cuihua, wearing a coarse cloth apron, came out of the kitchen and suddenly saw Liniang with short hair.

He quickly walked up to her, his expression one of pity, "Auntie, what's going on here?"

Su Shuangshuang, as if showing off, raised the bag of fatty meat she was carrying and grinned, "We haven't had meat at home for a long time, so this is a good opportunity to go to town, and it's something I can do on the side."

Cuihua's face showed a look of heartache. These two girls were nominally her elders, but in reality, they were only a few years older than her.

Su Liniang smiled calmly: "It's nothing. It's almost the busy farming season, and I'm not feeling energetic working. After cutting my hair short, I feel like I've lost a few pounds."

Cuihua took the pork from her hands. Although it weighed five jin, it suddenly felt as heavy as a thousand jin.

Si Niu cautiously approached, a maturity beyond her years appearing on her small face.

"Auntie, my heart aches for you."

Waaaaah.

When San Niu came out of the kitchen, she also saw this scene. The innocent and carefree child saw Si Niu crying and was unconsciously infected by her emotions, and golden tears fell one by one onto the yellow earth.

For a moment, a sense of sadness enveloped the Chen family.

After regaining their composure, Chen Xian and the others said calmly, "From now on, both of you will be our closest family members."

Li Niang took out a red rope from her pocket and said gently, "These are hair ties for San Niu and Si Niu. Tie them on quickly."

Si Niu's little face tightened, and she said seriously and earnestly, "Auntie is so good, really so good."

Chen Xian looked at the fatty meat, pondering the best way to prepare it.

I've got it! How about making that dish that goes well with rice?

He instructed Cuihua to put the newly bought rice into the pot and knead the dough.

Cuihua exclaimed in astonishment, "Dad, we have meat, white rice, and white flour all the time... This is amazing..."

They dared not speak loudly, for fear of being scolded.

Dazhu said in a low voice, "Just listen to your father. I know what I'm doing. We'll continue to go to the market and set up a stall tomorrow."

Cuihua felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from her heart. Okay.

As an unknown food blogger, I often recreate some dishes. I don't have many followers, but over time, I have indeed learned to cook quite a few dishes.

I glanced around the kitchen and found there was no white sugar.

What a pity.

We do have some soy sauce, we'll make do with that for now.

Chen Xian said he wanted to cook.

The Chen family refused.

Si Niu asked with a puzzled look, "Dad, you can cook?"

Cuihua: Dad, I have something to say, but I don't dare to. Is what you made edible?

Dazhu: So what if it tastes bad? It's meat, not wild vegetables. Even if it tastes bad, it's still better than wild vegetable roots.

Erzhu: "Dad, are you sure?"

Chen Xian remained silent.

First, put the pork belly into the pot.

Boil for about 15 minutes, then take it out and cut it into pieces.

Heat the dark iron pot and add oil.

Pan-fry the meat until golden brown, then add salt, chili peppers, wild scallion segments, ginger slices, and boiling water.

Quickly and efficiently, Chen Xian closed the lid and went outside to stand for a while.

The Chen family looked at their father, who was so efficient and decisive, with some confusion.

Cuihua: Is this still Dad? How come he can cook better than me?

Erzhu's eyes flashed with a sharp light as he scanned Chen Xian, as if trying to find a secret about his father.

Chen Xian didn't turn his head and calmly said, "Don't look at me like that. Actually, cooking is a matter of talent. When I'm on the street, I can guess how the food is made just by looking at the food stalls."

Dazhu nodded, his face full of admiration: "Dad is really amazing."

Erzhu, with an expression of disbelief that seemed to say "unless I also have this talent," echoed, "Understood."

Five pounds of pork were all put into the pot, and Cuihua felt extremely distressed.

"That's five pounds! If stored properly, it'll last for more than ten days. If you're really frugal, it can last for a month. Just slice it into paper-thin pieces, enough to have a little flavor."

Li Niang is finding it increasingly difficult to understand Chen Xian.

Didn't you say that my husband is just an ordinary, elderly, lazy countryman?

How can someone write storybooks and cook at the same time?

Shuangshuang's pretty face was full of joy: "Why worry about so much? My husband's cooking smells so good, it's almost the same as the aroma coming from the restaurants in town."
