Chapter 4 Eating Wild Vegetables

The house was made of adobe, with rammed earth on the ground. There was a window in the side wall, the stove was dark, and the iron pot was polished to a shine.

A pot of something resembling a mushy wild vegetable porridge was bubbling and steaming.

Chen Cuihua began distributing bowls and chopsticks.

Each porcelain bowl had a chipped corner on the bottom, and the wooden chopsticks were greasy.

The Chen family children squatted on the ground, eating with their bowls in hand.

Chen Xian took the bowl and chopsticks and served Su Liniang a bowl.

"Li Niang, this is all the family can afford."

Suli Niang replied with a smile, "I eat this at home too."

Her requirements were simple: to no longer endure the gossip in the village, to have food to eat, and to have a place to stay. That was enough for her.

The wild vegetable paste was pitch black. Chen Xian poked it with his chopsticks; it was very sticky.

Slowly put it into your mouth.

The entrance... cough cough, it hurts my throat.

Seeing that the children seemed to take it for granted, I knew that they often ate this kind of wild vegetable porridge mixed with bran.

bitter.

Old Chen, who ate refined flour in later generations, had never tasted this kind of wild vegetable porridge.

Chen Erzhu had been secretly observing Chen Xian, feeling that his father was different this time.

I can't quite put my finger on what's different.

In the past, Dad wouldn't get out of bed unless his sister-in-law called him four or five times to say, "Dad, it's time to eat."

They would curse "mother" and "dog" after only a few words.

They used to speak so gently, unlike now.

In this family, Chen Erzhu was often beaten and scolded by Chen Xian.

Chen Dazhu is slightly better.

Chen Erzhu: "Big brother, have you noticed that Dad is different today?"

Chen Dazhu looked down and touched the dry rice.

Snoring.

Even his nose was covered in black paste.

"Is there?"

Chen Xian caught a glimpse of his two sons whispering to each other out of the corner of his eye, and suddenly felt a pang of unease.

Could it be that this rebellious son has discovered something?

Memories flowed back to the beginning, when this kid said something about something like... a pillow, and I vaguely remembered it.

She really is a cunning person.

Chen Xian's face darkened. "Second brother, after you finish eating, go up the mountain and find some wild vegetables and mushrooms for me. If you can't find three catties, you're not allowed to eat dinner. Damn it, you're such a big guy, and you eat as much as I do. What a waste of food."

Chen Erzhu's face fell.

It tastes just right.

Dad is still the same dad.

That feels good.

Su Shuangshuang lowered her head and ate her food, pouting, "Sister, our husband isn't as good as you say..."

Su Liniang: "Don't talk. After you finish eating, see if there are any clothes that need washing. You can't just sit around doing nothing in this house."

In this family, Chen Xian's status is greater than the children's, which is greater than the Su sisters'.

Yes, do more and talk less.
